Jones/Hildeby tandem is a frickin joke.

'Member when the org planned this team to go with Samsonov/Woll as their tandem?

Hildeby is not ready, and Jones is bad.

Sending a 22 y old with less than 30 AHL games experience in the NHL is not a recipe for success. If they go that way, it shows their incompetence.

They need to get a proper goalie to go with Woll when he "hopefully" comes back 100% from a mid season high ankle sprain.
How was anyone supposed to predict Samsonov having a complete mental breakdown after having a child.

Anyways, I say we go out and spend the assets to get a legit #1 goalie. We have used mediocre goalies for years now and it hasn't worked.

Wonder why this didn't get to the Players Assistance Program? Spencer Knight went that route without the professional embarrassment of getting waived.

Why is embarrassment a bad thing? Does everything have to be about preventing people from experiencing uncomfortable feelings? IMO negative experience it builds character.

Is there a reason people are assuming that he is having some sort of breakdown that requires professional help?

I think he mentioned in one of his pressers that he is mentally feeling down. It would be better for him IMO if he practiced gratefulness for being lucky enough to play the sport many dream of playing at professional level and having amassed a decent fortune.

Not being able to play the sport while still made it financially versus not being able to feed your family no matter how hard you try are two completely different level of challenges.

Samsonov's thought process needs some improvement. Unless there is some family thing he is dealing with then its a different story

Also mental weakness in just playing goalie versus serious mental health condition are two very different things.

Depends IMO

If one is consistently being told that they are great; first sign of any difficulty they will fold like a cheap tent because they have no idea how to deal with difficulty, stick to it, never get too high or too low and just stay even keel. This mental prep is of primary importance especially in fields like sports.

There are cases where there serious chemical imbalances in human body that leads to mental breakdown but scientific literature points to such cases being not significant proportion of population

IMO the western culture needs a bit of "reset" to improve mental fortitude of new generation ;)

Why couldn't they have walked away?

Could have just not qualified him...

Sweet Jebus.

After the season he had last year nobody, absolutely nobody, would have considered walking away from him. Not even the goaltending guru Kyle 'Spreadsheet' Dubas would have done that.

And if they had walked away, who was available to replace him?

Your claim that they could have just walked away is simplistic tot he point of stupidity. I know you think you're making a point by making that claim but trust me, you're not.

I’m curious what everyone was saying about Samsonov in the aberration thread and how much everyone has flip flopped.

Why do you act like Dubas or any GM wouldn't have signed Samsonov back after his season last year? This Treliving hate is getting old and you trying to disguise it as others obsessed with Dubas is getting even older. Every single post you make is we have this much in wasted cap space but you were never this vocal during Dubas time here and if we actually got playoff results during his time then I'd get it, but we didn't do anything and yet here you are. Can't believe you are actually trying to blame Treliving for bringing Samsonov back for 1 year and saying he wasted 3 mil in cap doing so.

I'm sure a lot were excited to get him back for that price after last season and only on a 1 year deal as well to prove it wasn't a fluke. Turns out it was a fluke and we aren't stuck with a long term overpaid goalie like Jack Campbell in Edmonton.

It would have been pretty unusual to walk away from the first goalie to win a playoff round.

Not saying it was the wrong choice to re-sign him... but once again, people are lying and saying he was forced to sign him, blaming the GM who didn't sign him, or pretending that 3.5 in wasted cap is irrelevant now...

Certain people are praising Treliving for signing Samsanov...

I think it was the right move by Treliving actually... but let's look at things with hindsight like you all did during the last GM's tenure.

I've just noticed a lot of people changing how they view signings because they are a fan of the new GM.

I feel for people who got mental problems but at the same time, Sammy or Campbell are two of the top 70 goalies in the World. You can’t become top 70 in any fields without beating tons of competitions.
They are talented players and just need to focus on saving the next shot instead of thinking the last shot that went past them.

Samsonov would have been a lay up signing for any GM after his season last year and no one would have an issue with it. A SV% decrease from .919 to .862 is just not a common thing for goalies to experience so you'd have to know something about the athlete.

They gave him every chance possible to bounce back. It wasn't just a bad stretch. He was losing games all by himself.
Hard to believe, but his poor play has been present almost since the beginning of the season.

I feel bad for him. He was a surprise last season. I hope he can find his game/nerve again.

That was expected

I really feel for Samsonov the person, though. By all accounts he’s a nice guy and this has clearly been impacting him mentally. Hopefully this can serve as a reset for him and allow him to comeback stronger

Nonetheless, this is the NHL and we need points. Hopefully Hidelby is up to the challenge

I agree, I really like Samsonov the person

He can’t play in the nhl right now though. I’m always excited for a young goalie who is playing well to get a chance to shine in the league

Because... you don't like him sitting on the bench and watching the game?

Hopefully, he can find his game again, but I'd be fine if he doesn't see the NHL again this year.

Hoping this means Hildeby is getting a look.

Hope not... he has a similar save percentage... .862 vs .863
I mean the damage is already done. I believe scratching Kampf and letting him sit on the bench last night did not sit well with the team.

Whatever you consider a traumatic experience, someone else likely doesn't consider a traumatic experience... it is all relative.

I wouldn't feel bad for the guy if his Ferarri got repoed, but not being able to perform well at one of the most important things in your life and thousands of people letting you know constantly is likely pretty bad for mental health.

Exactly this. It’s all relative.

I wish losing didn’t sit well with the team, even if it’s just a hair under how upset they get at consequences for losing games.

Like less ice time and ‘mean’ words

This soft team can kiss my ass if they’re going to get butthurt over benching when they’re sucking.

Prove everyone wrong and go out there and play hard every game for 60 minutes and win a cup. Prove us all wrong, get pissed off and show us how stupid we all are. I dare this team to even try

Well, maybe last year was his outliner year and he is just back to his norm this year.
To me, I don’t think he is as bad as his records this year and I do believe he norm is closer to last season.

this is going to shock the f***ing hell out of you but the vast majority of fans don't follow a team because there fans of the GM so any moves made they just give there opinion on it

now there's some fans that may follow the team just to wait for when the camera pans on the GM preening in his luxury box but for most the entertainment is on the ice

Any chance Buffalo or some other random team claims Samsonov?

...seems like a genius move now that Tre' only signed him for one year

* can a mod add me to the Bruins board again now that It's confirmed that Milan Lucic is one of the biggest, lying, dirtbag, women abusing, POS on the earth?

(Which is all I was trying to convey respectfully but I got banned for life completely unjustifiably)

***Thanks to all mods for your tireless efforts here on hf regardless of that***

Happy new year all!

What are the chances he gets claimed?

Is that something we want? Or do we want him to regain his form and come back?

I'm hoping he doesn't get claimed and regains his form, cause if Hildeby gets lit up it will be a long month waiting for Woll to be back. And an even longer season if he gets hurt again (or Jones)
I'm hoping the best for the player, whatever that might be.

He's a wreck in Toronto. Best case he goes somewhere else on waivers, plays well and resumes his career. Worst case he goes down to the minors, continues to get shelled and never gets another NHL contract.

The Leafs will be fine with or without him in their system, but his career hangs in the balance. I just hope it turns out well for him.

Ditto for Jack Campbell, too.
