How is signing a player who isn't going to play for the team and carries a 3.5 million dollar cap hit a good move?

I've seen multiple people say this... can anyone explain?
fans who aren't just following the sport to cheer for the GM don't care about whether half their favourite team's summer signings are still playing for the team 5 months later

Is there a reason people are assuming that he is having some sort of breakdown that requires professional help?
Exactly!
He lost his confidence not his sanity!

Is he beating his wife or slashing his wrists at night or kicking puppies for fun?

No, it's a soap story that's taken a life of its own.

He will be pampered to death in the Marlies until he can't do it anymore.
It's not like Putin has drafted him......

“If I’m saying I feel great, it’s not true. I feel (like) shit … (But) I’m a guy who will be fighting through this. I will be fighting every day.”
That was 2 months ago

“It’s tough right now,” Samsonov said. “I need to figure out everything in my head. That’s the first one. It’s not about technique … just in the head. I need to figure it out.”

“I want to try to get change as quick as I can, but sometimes in life it’s not working like that. I will keep fighting.”
Last week

Not saying he is going crazy... but seems like he needs to get his head right...

But what if he doesn't clear? Another team could take him as a reclamation project.
Yes fantastic if it happened. But I think he would actually need to win some AHL games rather than get overwhelmed by the AHL like Jack Campbell. There are more trustworthy options out there than a rehabbed Samsonov. Him getting plucked would be a win.

The only reason Dubas has such devout fans is because he’s young and he’s a stats guy. This relates well to kids that don’t play much competitive sports and gives them some sort of confidence. It’s super weird as I doubt other GMs have this following. I just don’t understand why they are still on this board. Go praise Dubas on the Pens board where they have a happy audience.
Lou seemed to have quite a following here for quite a while, too.

Nothing wrong with that, for either of them. They're both good hockey executives. Quite different from each other, but both successful.

Hopefully Treliving will have his own following here, too. Maybe he'll bring Leafs' Nation the Stanley Cup we've waited so long for :)

Will Samsonov clear?

First, the Leafs will have to wait until 2 p.m. Monday — well after their scheduled practice — to find out if another team claims Samsonov. That's not likely, giving his poor performance this season (5-2-6 with an .862 save percentage) and $3.55-million (U.S.) cap hit.

Other goalies of his ilk, notably ex-Leaf Jack Campbell of the Edmonton Oilers and Antti Raanta of the Carolina Hurricanes, cleared waivers. For that matter, so did Jones on the eve of this season. Campbell remains in the minors, while the Oilers remain weighed down by his $5-million-a-year deal that doesn't expire until 2027.

Still, enough teams are looking for goaltending that anything is possible. Samsonov will be a free agent after this season, so it would be a low-risk pick-up.

Making room

If Samsonov clears and is sent to the American Hockey League's Marlies to work on his game, that would free up $1.125 million in cap space. Woll (who earns $766,667) and/or forward Ryan Reaves (who earns $1.35 million) could also officially move to long-term injured reserve to make more room.

So, cap space isn't the issue, but opening a roster spot is. They had the maximum 23 on the roster Sunday, so they'd have to send someone off the roster to add a goalie.

Theoretically, Samsonov could still remain with the team while someone such as forward Pontus Holmberg $800,000) could be sent down. There's no requirement to send a player to the AHL once he clears waivers. The Leafs might feel more comfortable bringing three goalies to California.

More likely, the Leafs will send Samsonov to the Marlies, assuming he isn't claimed, with some sort of plan including plenty of practice to help him regain his confidence.

Dubas supporters criticizing Treliving for signing Samsonov to arguably the smallest and shortest duration contract possible is laughable.

Dubas is the guy that had a revolving door of largely mediocre short term goaltenders that included Mrazek and Matt Murray.

Dubas signed Mrazek to a three year contract, the same Mrazek that ultimately played the sum total of 20 games for the Leafs before Dubas himself ultimately decided to erase his mistake by giving up a first round pick, the 25th overall to dispose of the contract. (Don’t waste our time arguing about the value of the second rounder they got back.)

Dubas is the same guy that traded for his former Soo buddy, the oft injured Matt Murray whose contract has left the Leafs and Treliving in contract limbo as they don’t know when he’ll return from LTIR.

Let’s just be real here, If Dubas had remained as GM, there is no way he would have taken Samsonov to arbitration if for no other reason than he prides himself on being a players GM. He most likely would have signed Samsonov to a 3 or 4 year deal like he was asking for and the Leafs now would be saddled with yet another bad netminder contract.

Treliving made the most logical decision with Samsonov as he secured what had the possibility of being an important asset at the lowest possible cost.

only people who follow the sport to cheer for the GM would believe this , the vast majority of fans don't give a damn who the GM is , never mind what his background is
Yes exactly.

A GM should become popular and respected by fans because of the team’s ultimate success on the ice.

A GM shouldn’t become popular strictly based on of his age, political views, approach to player evaluation or some other unrelated factor.

Dubas largely underachieved expectations and seemed to be revered by some fans for something other than the team’s success.

I simply don’t get it.

I wish losing didn’t sit well with the team, even if it’s just a hair under how upset they get at consequences for losing games.

Like less ice time and ‘mean’ words

This soft team can kiss my ass if they’re going to get butthurt over benching when they’re sucking.

Prove everyone wrong and go out there and play hard every game for 60 minutes and win a cup. Prove us all wrong, get pissed off and show us how stupid we all are. I dare this team to even try
THe issue was that s6msonov could not stop a beach ball to save his life in the "vs CBJ"game. It has little to do Kampf.

it's important to be real, and to judge the former GM by the outcome of a scenario that didn't happen

the moves that the actual GM made this summer otoh are actually not all that important, because they can be buried I guess, and anyway he didn't really have any choice in making them really

Don't think you got the joke

For the record 46 light years old
A light-year is the distance light travels in one Earth year. One light-year is about 6 trillion miles (9 trillion km).

You've managed to mash two unrelated terms into a single sentence hoping no one would notice.

You're basically saying you're an idiot at 46 years old, without explicitly saying it.

What are the chances he gets claimed?

Is that something we want? Or do we want him to regain his form and come back?

I'm hoping he doesn't get claimed and regains his form, cause if Hildeby gets lit up it will be a long month waiting for Woll to be back. And an even longer season if he gets hurt again (or Jones)
Ever so slightly less than 0%

Agreed, we will never know, but I don’t think for one second Dubas let’s Sam go to arbitration, and we’d be staring at a multi year headache.
