We had to resign him. We had an unproven kid and nothing else. The key was holding the line and not committing long term. This idea we just walk away from him last year is Dubist nonsense.

Tre made two good goalie moves, bringing in Jones for solid depth and not committing/arbitration with Sam. Win, win.

"Win, win".... "ignore the 3.5 in cap space, please"

Wait. Is the term headcase something you're calling him? Or is there an actual source linking Washington calling him that?

Cause it's clear he's in a bad state mentally. But he was frikken great his first season with the Leafs
He was called that coming out of Washington.

He had arb rights and was a RFA, Leafs couldn't walk away unless they traded his rights before or if the award was higher

They qualified him... don't we lose his rights if we don't? We didn't have to sign him.

For the record, I think it was the right move... just weird to see people blame a former GM or chalk it up as a win.

We can probably speculate he would have got 2 years if he wasn't UFA in 2024.

Arbitration term for Samsonov limited to one year

Under the collective bargaining agreement, the contracts awarded player-elected salary arbitration cannot exceed two seasons. In situations where a player is one year away from unrestricted free agency, that term cannot exceed one year.

The 26-year-old Samsonov is eligible for unrestricted free agency next season and can only be awarded a one-year deal as a result.

What are the chances he gets claimed?

Is that something we want? Or do we want him to regain his form and come back?

I'm hoping he doesn't get claimed and regains his form, cause if Hildeby gets lit up it will be a long month waiting for Woll to be back. And an even longer season if he gets hurt again (or Jones)

I realize that, but by whom? Fans, team mates or staff?

Cause the first group is notoriously fickle as evidenced by what we read on this forum, daily... lol
I’m not going back to find the source, look at when we signed him, it came out of Washington, that’s was cited as one of the reasons they walked away from him. Cheers.

There wasn’t a person here arguing we walk away from Sammy last off season. That was an asinine move. The shrewd move was winning in arbitration, holding his cap hit down and not committing long term. Whether some argumentative Dubas fan boy agrees is frankly irrelevant.

Yeah, everyone wanted to sign him. The problem is Samsonov came into the season with his head screwed on wrong for whatever reason and couldn't dig out. Not sure if this crosses into the Players Assistance Program type of personal issues or it's just a young guy who can't figure it out professionally. Dubas or Treliving would have signed this guy.

I do feel bad for him personally, he’s in a bad state.

People who have no money generally think money is the solution to all problems.

There is a lot more in life than just money.

Foolishness... there is more to life than having fun, there is more to life than eating, there is more to life than drinking beer, there is more to life than playing video game, there is more to life than finding that special someone, there is more to life than winning the cup... you can say there more to life than a million things... I've been poor, Mr Noodle for breakfast, lunch and dinner poor and I've been financially very comfortable... the latter is the preferable state.

Dubas wouldn't have. He is a goalie guru and there is nobody in the league as good at evaluating goalies as him and his spreadsheets. Go ahead, ask any Dubasite and they'll tell you.
