Disappointing it played out this way.

Not good news for the team as best case was he recaptured his success from last season.

This was the only option left at this point.

Being born in Canada makes you "lucky sperm"...

It is all relative.

Playing in the NHL is something he worked very hard to do... I think it'd be very disappointing and not great mentally to have something you worked so hard for ending.

what a load

Here is just one example

When I was younger every summer some/most of my peers would be travelling while I was working every summer to make ends meet and put money aside. Then the some of them would look down on me when we got together because I didn't travel and just worked odd jobs in summer.

Please spare me the moral high ground

Thank goodness he gets to go down relax and hopefully get things(most importantly his health) in order.

Maybe telling him how much of a shitty goalie he is (via arbitration) right before the season started wasn’t the best idea ?

Best case scenario, he finds his mojo again.

Let's not forget, Ilya was a better than average goalie for a while, here and in Washington.

I'm hoping Ilya does get back on track or Hildeby plays better than average , consistently.

Both those things happening would be fantastic (but highly unlikely). Neither of them happening, is about a Leafy as can be.... so probably the outcome lol

Let’s not forget Washington walked away from him for nothing too and was called a “head case” there.

I feel for Sammy as a person, but this is clearly the right move for the Leafs. Also maybe the right move for Sammy - he was in a death spiral of bad play leading to anxiety leading to even worse play, maybe he can find his game again out of the spotlight on the Marlies.

This is probably earlier than the Leafs would like for giving Hildeby a taste of the NHL. Hopefully he does decently, but if he struggles, really hope the fans and media are understanding. He’s a young goalie with upside, but still needs a lot more development to hit his potential, what we’ll be seeing is far from a finished product. Huge goalies (6’6”+) are maybe the latest bloomers of any archetype, for example Markstrom didn’t really figure things out at the NHL level until he was ~26 years old, Ben Bishop ~29 years old, and Hildeby is just 22. Jake Oettinger is a very “early bloomer” for a 6’6”+ goalie, and I believe he played his first NHL game at ~21-22.
Great post

Reactions: ponder
Sure, but in the end he was a “head case”. I’m just glad we only had him signed to one year, it was a shrewd move.
Wait. Is the term headcase something you're calling him? Or is there an actual source linking Washington calling him that?

Cause it's clear he's in a bad state mentally. But he was frikken great his first season with the Leafs

How was it a waste exactly?
We had to resign him. We had an unproven kid and nothing else. The key was holding the line and not committing long term. This idea we just walk away from him last year is Dubist nonsense.

Tre made two good goalie moves, bringing in Jones for solid depth and not committing/arbitration with Sam. Win, win.
