Maybe it’s just me, but I see him as mostly making his impact on the 2nd and 3rd lines, while being a machine on the power play. I really don’t see the downside to this move if it’s only a 2 year deal. The draft lottery doesn’t incentivize tanking. Do your best to be competitive and make the playoffs until you’re realistically eliminated and then focus on the draft after that.

Gorton ends the interview saying he can’t talk about Kova who belongs to another organization. Kova is claiming to come here, 2-3 years and 6m per. The term isn’t set.

Shero gave Grossman free reigns to talk to teams and negotiate a deal last summer. We had discussions with Kovalchuk then. There is no way that permission was boxed in, a third party don’t put two people in a room and require that they only can discuss X but not Y.

So what is going on here?

1. The Kova reports are bogus. Coming from his people to stir up interest.

2. Gorton lied at the end of the PC, he can talk with Kova and we got a deal in place that will be signed once Kova turns 35. Lied is a strong word, but said what he said because it’s an easy way to stop questions from coming.

How do you get permission to talk to a player owned by another team? The sanctions are strong, I think you want it in writing. A mail probably is enough. If it’s a mail, no lawyers can get a hold of it. Grossman and Shero talks, they agree on something, Gross asks Shero to drop him a mail with that conten “just for the sake of good order”. Do lawyers get involved and you write a one pager of it? A lawyer would get a time limit on the permission. Shero’s mail wouldn’t include a time limit, it’s ‘I confirm that NJD gives you permission to discuss contracts with IK” period basically. That permission would still apply.

3. We could talk with Kova last summer and let him know that we would be interested next summer if a trade could t be worked out — and Kova is interested so his people are spreading the word like it’s a done deal. Negotiating through the media basically.

Interesting situation.

People don't realize how long he's been out of the league and that he's not young anymore. This is the kind of move the Rangers used to make when they stunk.

1. Everyone realizes exactly how long he's been out of the NHL and how old he is. This is very readily available information.
2. The Rangers used to pile move like this on top of move like this. That was the problem. That was the only play in their playbook. That period scorned scorned Ranger fans so badly that every time they acquire a player who has already had their 28th birthday, we get reactions like this. The Rangers just shipped out 4 roster players for a bunch of picks and prospects and now they might be adding a player to replace some of that at no cost in prospects/picks/players. Not remotely similar to anything that happened from 1998-2003.

And which, just to add, probably also allows them to move another roster player (Zuccarello) for additional players/picks.

I agree that people are unreasonable when it comes to age and write people off in their late 20s early 30s but this guy's gonna turn 35 in a week. It's legitimate criticism. And his cap hit gonna represent a cost to the team even though they're not giving up a pick.

Rebuilding is about what you bring in, not what you abstain from. Look at Pittsburgh and Chicago's moves in the years before their Cup runs. Palffy, Gonchar, Recchi, Roberts, Khabibulin, Huet, Lapointe, Barnaby, Smolinksi, Aucoin etc. etc.

This type of asset management isn’t something Sather was in to. Gorton on the other hand is all over that ****.

I'll cry tears of joy if Gusev ends up here, but aren't his rights owned by Vegas?
I guarantee we attempt to trade for his rights. Whether or not we get them is a different story. I would trade Spooner for his rights + 3rd

And that cost to the team will effect them how in regards to the rebuild? Chytil, Andersson, Howden, Shestyorkin, Rykov, Lindgren, Hajek all haven't started their ELCs. What will Kovalchuk prevent them from doing?

Only thing I can see Kovy preventing us from doing is potentially signing Karlsson but even then we may have enough money to do so depending on trades we may make next year, and who knows if he'll even come here

I don't see Gimli taking down the Witch King like Merry did, you gotta know how to use your skills instead of blundering around tripping over your own beard

And have a sword designed to kill the beings from Mordor... plus Eowyn. Does she come in the deal?

Other things with that money, obviously. Never said it derailed the rebuild.

The Knicks and Rangers aren't selling well right now. This is the kind of move you make if you want to create some buzz around MSG. Sign a star in the twilight of their career. Seen it before, I'd pass. If he was gonna sign a team friendly deal I'd change my mind but you know he wants money.
