1. Everyone realizes exactly how long he's been out of the NHL and how old he is. This is very readily available information.
2. The Rangers used to pile move like this on top of move like this. That was the problem. That was the only play in their playbook. That period scorned scorned Ranger fans so badly that every time they acquire a player who has already had their 28th birthday, we get reactions like this. The Rangers just shipped out 4 roster players for a bunch of picks and prospects and now they might be adding a player to replace some of that at no cost in prospects/picks/players. Not remotely similar to anything that happened from 1998-2003.
-31- droppin' knowledge. I appreciate your work in this thread.

This thread is 100% an exercise of a famous F Scott Fitzgerald quote.

Idea 1: Rebuild and get younger
Idea 2: Sign 35 year old Ilya Kovalchuk

Sometimes, when you think about two opposing ideas, you start to realize they aren’t opposing ideas at all.

Hey..I've always loved Kovalchuk's game and especially his competitiveness but.....HE'S 35 YEARS OLD.

If this is as creative as JG can get, we're in for a continuation of the current shit show..

Where's the evidence for that? This probably isn't even going to be close to the biggest move this team makes this summer

George..I'm not sure of your age but the NYR had made a regular practice out of signing players past their primes to their retirement contracts for a very long time.
I'd really like to think that they've learned and turned a corner at this point..

It's called a stopgap. Kovy is a free asset who can play in the top 6. Adding him gives Gorton the flexibility to trade other players, like Zucc or Spooner, without totally depleting the roster.

Would you rather have Kovy + Assets from a Zucc trade, or just Zucc? Kovy won't be here longer than 2 years and we can flip him for even more assets.

Signing Kovy for 2 years isn't remotely the same thing. Maybe he is past his prime, but he was one of the best players at the Olympics. If he sucks, he sucks. Does it really matter in the middle of a rebuild? So we suck worse and get a better pick. The horror.

Believe me, I get it, but I don't see this as management thinking Kovalchuk is going to be the answer to things

What does “retirement contract” mean to you?

JG wouldn't have Stepan and most likely Zucc.
Both for a very reasonable prices but he's going to give 35 year old Kovalchuk possibly 3 years??
Dafuq outta here!
That's insanity!

It wouldn't surprise me if he had a few more seasons in him. It also wouldn't surprise me if he gets a 3 year deal and we're complaining about his contract halfway into year one. Years 28-32 are still prime years for a lot of players but years 35-37 can be really rough.

Some of you are acting like a free agent signing can't backfire because it doesn't involve trading assets. It can backfire real bad and whatever he ends up being paid represents money that could have gone somewhere else.

In a rebuild you try to get as many assets as you possibly can. Signing Kovy allows us to trade away Zuc for futures while still having a good top six winger for the kids (Chytil, Buch) to play with

This is what boggles my mind. People didn't wanna bring back Miller because he'd cost too much to re-sign. People didn't like the idea of having to give McDonagh a big contract at the end of next year. But when it comes to Kovalchuk it's free money apparently.

You can trade Zucc with or without Kovalchuk. And it's far from a guarantee that he'll be good next year. He's been playing on the KHL all star team for the last five years.

Im a JG fan. But if this is true I think it’s a disgrace. What’s the point. We aren’t winning any time soon. He’s 35 and if he plays well all he does is ruin our chance at the lottery next season and a Hughes. Please no

One of these things is not like the other. Two of them will be looking for term which is almost more important than the AAV.

You need NHLers on the roster next year. You can't just throw Lias and Chytil out there all by themselves and expect them to flourish. In fact, that could impede their devleopment

As a 37 year old, I find myself struggling with this notion.

Some days, I feel like I’m 22. And on other days, 74.

I ate egg whites for breakfast today. And for some reason I took bayer, hoping it would prevent a heart attack... Why? Cause I’m **** old, dude.

I then countered those good deeds by passing on the avocado salad I was eying on Grubhub today for a good 45 minutes, and ironically opted for a 5 guys bacon cheeseburger and small fries. (Which is enough to feed a small country in Africa).

35 is old. But it’s not, molasses old. Kovy has good hockey left in him. Personally, I would pass on him. But, Gorts has a plan and thus far, I trust what he’s doing.

Well, yea definitely because sometimes the term is bad and you end up having to pay a player past his prime.
