OVECHKIN SCORES TYING GOAL TO CLIMB WITHIN 10 OF GRETZKY
With the Rangers leading 2-1, Alex Ovechkin continued The Gr8 Chase by scoring the tying goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation to set the stage for Tom Wilson’s overtime winner as the Capitals (40-14-8, 88 points) moved into a tie in terms of standing points with the League-leading Jets (42-16-4, 88 points). Ovechkin’s goal marked the 885th of his career, moving him within 10 of capturing the NHL’s goals record from Wayne Gretzky (894).

* Ovechkin recorded his 32nd career game-tying goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation and tied Gretzky for the most in NHL history. It also marked his 86th point in that scenario, moving him past “The Great One” for the most.
* Ovechkin has scored 156 of his 885 career goals in March and is just one back from tying Gretzky (157 in December) for the most in any calendar month.
* The Capitals captain is now on pace to break the all-time NHL goals record April 6 on the road against the Islanders at this season’s goals-per-game rate of 0.70. At his career goals-per-game rate of 0.60, he would break the record April 12 in Columbus.

Hope he does it on home ice

Can someone explain to me why Caps are not considered legit Cup contenders?
For me, they have won me over, why wouldnt they have a shot at the Cup?

He has 10 in his last 12 games.

Hopefully he's trying for #900 in that last game.
Current season's pace is .69 goal/game. With 20 games left that would mean maybe 14 more goals to finish at 899 on the year. Would be epic to see him keep up this hot pace and hit 900.

I think people can't let go of the pre-season predictions. They weren't supposed to be competitive and weren't even supposed to make the playoffs. Getting swept in embarrassing fashion in 4 by the Rangers last year still inflicts some recency bias too.

Having watched this team for 20+ years, what's interesting about this team is the balance. Yes, Ovie is gonna Ovie. But as a testament to the depth of this team, they are leading the league and didn't have a single player in the 4Nations tournament.

This team also has resiliency they didn't last year. If we got down by a goal or two last year, we were toast. This year, if I'm not mistaken, they have the most comeback wins of any team. They also have some insane 3rd +/-, for those who believe in that.

Aside from some goalie up in Winnipeg, Thompson has been Vezina caliber. Lindgren has been a very capable backup, though they started out as 1A and 1B, Thompson now owns the crease and Charlie is the backup.

They've seamlessly added a bunch of new players [Dubois, Chychrun, Mangio, Thompson], Strome is showing why he was such a high draft pick, and players like McMichael and Protas have developed in top 9 talent. Frank has been a pleasant surprise.

The Achilles' heel for this team is that they still have a tendency to "take a period" off here and there, which can burn you in the playoffs.

I think similar thoughts exist with Winnipeg as well...since you mention them. They are 1st overall and have been pretty much the whole year, but I'm guessing not many people see them as cup favourites.

Whatever goalie gets the goal breaking matchup, sucks for them
Not really, probably a privilege really. So what, you let in goal #895....just a single goal. What you don't want to be is the guy that gave up more goals against "x" player than anyone else....but that isn't really a widely publicized stat.

Fedorov (8 assists) is the only HOFer?
Yep.
Just noticed. Backstrom is #2 All-time Center by A2PG (with 1000+ games).
I doubt any other winger (or player) would lift him that high.
Also Carlson is pretty high #16 All-time Defenseman by A1PG (with 1000+ games).
The most common PP sequence was like: Ovi passes to John and he passes back to Ovi, then it's a goal.

The mad lad is actually going to break the record. Crazy.
Like to see Ovie really heat up and score multiple Hatties and put this Goofzky thing in the mirror

Scoring never gets old but players like Gretzky did and when he lost that he lost it all...unlike Ovie he was like Bobby Hull cause he was/is a goal scoring machine just let them/him tee it up and watch...

Ovi is slow (I agree)

We dont have that 100 pt player on our team, might not have anyone finish over PPG

Getting major contributions from 2 key young guys in Protas/CMM so ya kinda wonder when they are going cold or plateau (I agree a bit)

Great goaltending has carried them (agree but also our D and system is great)

Year 2 in Carbs system and everyone is buying in. D additions of Chyc and Roy have been huge .. you arent going to blow us out. We will win by 1-3 goals or lose in OT.

Fans after watching their team play the Caps say "I see it now, they play within a solid system"

--------------

More goals now then we did all of last season
Tied or leading the league in pts from the blue line .. our transition game is on point

A series of fortunate events (LTIR money went to some great additions)

Yeah, Backys high A2 vs A1 always catches my eye. I think this is how many of his As were delivered to OVs office.

He's got some opportunity to gain some ground during this stretch.

Should have the opportunity to take a chunk out during this stretch of games. With the exception of the Kings all the opponents are in the bottom twelve for GAG.

Absolutely bonkers how different the projection is for the Caps and Pens.

Caps : a ton of young roster talent, great trades and signings and elite pipeline, first in the conference

Pens: best players are all old, bad trades and signings, empty pipeline, missing play offs again

Chara is there too. I'd guess he'll be a Hall of Famer.
