If the NHL does NOT participate in 2022, which format do you prefer?

What you don’t understand is that the Stanley Cup is older than any international hockey competition.

It’s not about money to Canadians. Maybe it is for foreigners in the NHL.

Winning an Olympic gold medal in ice hockey is a relatively recent accomplishment by comparison.
So 1915 versus 1920 makes that big of a difference? I disagree.

Leave the format as is. I have found it fun to see a tournament which is full of all the best players who are not in the NHL. It must be a great time for scouts. All these non NHL players in one spot

It’s actually been awarded from 1893.

The fact that the Olympics excluded the top Canadian players from winning it for almost a century is also an obvious contributing factor - something that doesn’t apply to Kharlamov, Mikhailov, Makarov, Fetisov, Tretiak and Co.

Until the Canada Cups, and the subsequent tournaments in Nagano, Salt Lake City, Torino, Vancouver and Sochi, the only real senior level international event of note was the Summit Series in 1972 precisely because Canada’s best could participate.

Comparing these isolated tournaments against the annual award of the Stanley Cup for over a century and it’s easy to see why it’s the trophy Canadians grew up wanting to win.

Not all about money - no matter what some Europeans want to believe.

Amateurs + U20.
No one who has played professionally should be at the Olympics. Coaching or otherwise.
The team who has the least professional experience is the one I want winning.

All the other athletes in other sports are professional, why would the IIHF (who decide the tournament format) shoot at it's own net?

I d hope IIHF increases the NHL transfer fee to 4mil. The leagues producing the players need to stop NHL "using their players for free" and since NHL value goes down with the ban, the fees can go up.

The format can be Europro only. Winners matter.

IIHF doesn't dictate the transfer sum, it's the NHL who dictates it. Or rather NHL because they know it's a players market. IIHF doesnt' want to stop player transfers between the leagues nor do the leagues and federations.

If the NHL doesn't participate in 2022....I won't be watching.

Just like this Olympics! I tried, I really did. But the men's hockey is just so sloppy and not exciting. So I have stopped following it.

The sum is agreed between IIHF and the NHL. Current level is measly 240k. NHL, IIHF agreement: No transfer fees - Sportsnet.ca

Optimal situation would be 3-5million, with 20 game tryout. This kills the AHL dumpster league for mediocre skill prospects, everyone wins.

Yes, IIHF is the partner on behalf of the national federations. They can't dictate the transfer amount. The only thing that they really can try to influence on behalf of the federations is transfer deadlines, which happened in the past. That was actaully the biggest beef they with the NHL years ago, not the money. They got fed up with players signing weeks before the domestic league seasons began.

Perhaps you did not read the article gwh posted?

Btw, when do you plan to reply if the Bosman ruling is applicable in the US?

I'm not a huge fan of the idea of U20 teams at the Olympics because those aged 17 in the Olympic year (and 21 the following) would have such a small chance to make it to the Olympics. Maybe U23 or something like that would be better, the Olympics would be a unique experience for them (until it becomes best-on-best). That being said, if U20 Worlds lack some of the best players who are already playing in the NHL, it'd be even worse with a U23 team.

Just keep it as it is to get as good a tournament as you can have without the NHL players. I'll be watching sports where all the best are competing.

Pretty much everyone calling for amateurs at the Olympics are just disappointed that USA or Canada are not dominating the tournament. People complaining about the quality of this tournament, are expecting to improve it by decreasing the quality of players. I am pretty sure that’s not how it works.

Yeah you can't complain about quality and want amateurs. That makes no sense.

If not best-on-best, IMO U-20 World juniors should be played with the Winter Olympics. So no two different tournaments in that year.

IIHF WC would be the men's tournament.

Amateurs won't need one because that's totally artificial definition which is too easy to circumvent. And dependaple on every country's own training system.

Of course, this won't ever happen. Because of politics / associations.
