I thought his jersey was the best selling one of 2014. That alone is quite a bit of respect shown towards him, assuming that people actually walk around with his name on their backs rather than throwing it on the ice.

that's a Leafs Thing

He might get less respect if Russian or Swedish. Everyone knows what he can do, unreal in the playoffs and now having maybe his best season of his career.

One of the most skilled players in the league.

It has more to do with the fact that he's playing in Chicago, in the US & in the central division. He's away from the major media focus of most of the largest, fan/media areas/teams.

Just imagine for a sec, if he played in Toronto.

Sorry to disappoint you OP, but no ones cares if Kane is 'murican, black, white, chinese or marsian. He's an elite player and performs at a high level and that's why he is respected. To say he doesn't get the respect he deserves because of his race/nationality is short sighted and ignorant.

I do think Kane would be regarded slightly higher if he were Canadian. In addition to his 2 Cups and Conn Smythe, he'd have 2 Olympic Golds on his resume. Perceptually, he would also garner more National praise from the Canadian media. Kane is already one of the elite players in the game (for anyone who actually watches the sport) but he would be considered a notch higher (and on par with Crosby/Toews) if he was Canadian IMO. For example, look at Tavares, Getzlaf and Giroux. None of them have been as great as Kane IMO (all things considered) and they are probably "regarded" or "perceived" as better.

If he was Canadian maybe, but I'd say he gets the amount of respect that he deserves. He's famous enough that most non hockey fans know of him, and that can really only be said about like 5-10 guys.

Yeah right OP. Kane gets all the respect he deserves.

As if we're anti-american player here or something! LOL

Pacioretty and Galchenyuk are two of my favorite players....both American.

Kane is awesome...multiple cup winner....clutch as hell....skills to pay ther bills!

How could you not like that?

This. He gets a ton of respect from folks who don't care about nationality. Unfortunately, a large chunk of the hockey media world are Canadians, some of whom very much care about nationality.

If he were Canadian, you would never stop hearing about him from guys like Cherry, Healy, Kypreos, Hrudey etc. They just love their good ol' Canadian boys.

Yes, I'm sure Patrick Kane would be given much more respect as a Russian. I'm sure the coverage of him getting black out drunk in Wisconsin, or punching a cab driver would have been treated totally the same. No one would have called him a discipline problem, a coach killer, or a locker room cancer.

I have no problem to with Kane, but suggesting he would be treated better as a Russian is laughable.

And that's fine, because a good laugh is exactly what the thread gave me when I saw the title. Best joke of the day AINEC.

I don't think he'd be more respected if he were from someplace other than the USA. It is weird though, that Toews gets as much praise as he does given that he's never actually been particularly spectacular, and could probably have been with Jordan Staal at the draft without any impact on the Blackhacks' two cups.

It also baffles me that people seem to simply forget that the team also features Keith, Seabrook, Sharp, ****in HOSSA, and now even Brad Richards are all there with Kane and Toews.

Chicago could trade him and they wouldn't miss a beat Kane is a Punk not a leader on the Hawks.A good player but no better than Kessel So no he isn't a top 3 player defiantly not the best. If there was a draft of current players hed be lucky to be top 20

Unlike, say, American announcers and media that broadcast to an American audience and who are never, ever biased toward American players. Ever.
