Yeah but the extras, many wouldn’t watch, when we were bad and didn’t even have stars to cheer for I didn’t watch many games. Don’t get me started on the Ballard years, some years back then I bet I didn’t watch 10 games an entire season.

Edit to add: the regular season games would be boring as hell. By comparison the playoffs are short. Before we know it Cup, yay but then probably thinking maybe I should have watched more games. Lol!
People will always support a winner.

Absolutely not Woodcroft. These players (and this market) would walk all over him. I see another Keefe there. hard-pass.

Torts, I've always felt was the right coach for this team. He's not the same as Babs which I think is a misconception that all hard-nosed coaches are the same.

Ok but only one team in 32 does. Most of the time we would be playing boring ass hockey and not win a Cup either.
Play whichever way will bring the most success, it doesn't matter the style.

It is different now, even if the Leafs is as bad as the Sharks with no star power, they will still sell out the arenas and people will still buy jersey of some players or just a Maple Leaf jersey.
Leafs will always be prime time on HNIC despite their records.
The brand is too strong and I would even go as far as stating if the Leafs is in the dark ages like the Ballard years, they will still bring in top 3 if not the most revenue in the league.

Yeah, that would be pretty dumb to bring in a guy that's already shown he can't motivate young stars.

Genuine question, why is everyone so big on Berube ? I feel like a lot of people are just saying it because it seems like the trend now.

Voted Gallant, but very genuine in asking why Berube ?

People like coaches who are/were successful.
For the most part no one really has any idea who is a good coach or not other than judging the results.

Fair.

I think the issues go beyond just the coaching though, new coach same core, still won't get it done. Just gonna have to wait out the Tavares contract, but I would be actively shopping Marner for a #1D. Don't trade him just to trade him but if an opportunity presents itself, I think we absolutely need to pull the trigger on it.

for me and I accept I’m in the minority, if the games weren’t exciting and we didn’t have stars, I’d tune in for the finals… Much like baseball and Basketball. I don’t even watch football and couldn’t name you 6 NFL players, I couldn’t even name one current CFL player. Maybe there are more like me but maybe not, Roger’s paying 5 billion for broadcast rights means there is a lot more cash there than attendance.

That's the question which IMO, needs to be answered.
Will a new Coach make a difference. IMO, they will find out before they move away from the core.

Frankly, I'm not sure the Leafs organization will ever bring in someone like that after what happened with Babcock. They'll likely replace Keefe with another players coach when the time arrives.

Exactly, because in MLSE land the inmates rule the asylum (which to be fair, isn't all that uncommon with sports teams).
If the stars don't like the new guy, he's gone long before they are.

Unless, Treliving makes it clear that the new bench boss is the man. If players don't listen or play for him, they'll be stapled to the bench or watching from the press box. Of course, that won't happen but if you're going Berube/Torts-type guy, it has to be this way or it'll fail.

Players won't have any issue playing for a tougher coach if they believe it will lead to success.
Babcock was a head case, players don't want to play for headcases.

Very difficult to enforce when everyone has a NMC.

Berube seems like a logical choice. Settled on him but they should do it quickly.

Berube is a decent coach but quite frankly IMO he got very lucky as Binnington took over and changed the outlook of their season the season they won the cup.

As the old showing goes.... show me a good goalie and I will show you a good coach ;)

P.S. Blues at the time also had "character players" throughout their line up IMO.

Peitrangelo, ROR, Tarasenko, Dunn, etc... were very instrumental in putting their foot down on the gas to get it done.

Leafs besides Rielly I find it hard to find any character guys who will get up and take the bulls by the horns at the time of adversity. May be they have learned by now? :dunno:

No matter how bad this season gets I don’t see Keefe getting fired. I think we will see a coaching change after this season. Especially when/if they miss the playoffs.

To answer the question, I always liked Gallant. He's been canned a few times unexpectedly, and that worries me a bit. But I think he'd be my pick, based on my limited knowledge.

But overall I'm still fine with Keefe. I don't see a ton of things I wish he'd do differently. He's sometimes wishy-washy in interviews. But that's more a PR problem than a failure as a coach. He's even benched some big name guys. I don't think a new coach changes much.
