If it's not Jack Campbell who should be the Leafs new #1 goalie?

I have concerns about doing any big money long term contract with Campbell. He’s shown he is mentally weak and in a market like Toronto with a potential big contract he needs to be tough.

I disagree that he's mentally weak, he's just not durable and had a long stretch of bad play. Even during his bad stretch of games, he took it on and kept up and pushed through. He was pretty good in the playoffs.

Campbell is a good starter, the problem is that his durability is questionable to say the least.

Leafs have been burned A LOT over the last 3-4 years with their goaltenders being out long-term, especially down the stretch.

I'd say if Gibson is available on a soft deal, go get him and get a quality cheap backup like Halak/Holtby in case Gibson is injured.

No goalie on the market is a sure thing.

Enough of the tandem talk. Look at every team who goes far in the playoffs, they don't have tandems. They have a legit #1 and a good backup. We can't continue thinking a tandem goaltending situation is the solution.

Trade for Gibson (55-60 games)
Soft trade for Blackwood (20-25 games)

Both would come in for total of 9.4 million. That's not counting any money out (Kerfoot, Holl, possibly Nylander, etc, etc)

The assets to trade for both would be very hard to give up.

For Gibson, yes.
For Blackwood, I can definitely see it being a soft deal.

Maybe... but probably not.

So while it's easy to say "just trade for X Y and Z" it's not always as simple as that.

And the Leafs don't have 10M in cap space for goaltenders.

To be honest I don't think Campbell has the track record to be called a good starter. Never really stayed injury free enough or was good enough to be a true starter at any point in his career. However Husso just got 5 million practically and has a pretty limited track record albeit a great season. Who knows anymore lol

Obviously they don't have 9.2 million in space right now, but you also have to factor in money out in the deals. If you somehow move out Kerfoot and Holl in the deals, that's 5.5 million in cap you moved out. So suddenly you have a legit #1 goalie in Gibson, a good backup in Blackwood for a difference of 3.7 million.

What assets do you think would required to land Gibson?

If we get Gibson, forget Blackwood. Go with Kallgren/Woll/ZamboniDriver as backup for all I care since we're going to make the playoffs no matter what and at that point, it would be Gibson or bust anyway.

Per the rumours, probably a 1st and another good asset -- at the minimum. I assume it would be the classic 1st, prospect and young player that lands you a good to great player.

I mean the most likely sounds like kuemper but that’ll still cost more than leafs tandem last year. Let’s say he signs a super team friendly deal at 5.5M plus a backup at 750k, at the minimum, the goalies are costing 6.25M. Last year, goalies cost 5.5M so this year it would be a MINIMUM 750k more. Yes cap went up by 1M, but the 6.25M is the best case scenario. This is getting really dicey. If it’s not one of Campbell or Kuemper, I don’t know what the leafs do?…

"if you have time, use it"
Except they don’t have time

Trying to be cool? Who's the one with a hat brand as their username lol. But nice try.

Back to the point. Yes, a soft deal for Blackwood. He's requested a trade out, New Jersey had already said he's available, they just traded for Vanecek. I can see maybe a B prospect with 2nd Round Pick being enough for Blackwood.

Given the way things are shaking out, I’d push hard to get Campbell back now. We desperately need to firm up the position, he’s adequate as a 1, the team likes him and the other options aren’t that attractive, cap wise too. Just bring Jack back, a slight overpay is better than uncertainty.

Colorado just won the cup with absolute trash tandem goaltending in the playoffs.

$4.75 million per for Husso

This guy played 5 games for the Blues this year ... 1.22 and .958.
