Boyle will never get a C but personally i'd love it if he got an A. Yeah guys he doesn't score and he can't fight and you all know so much about hockey that Boyle for sure is dust. Its hard to call out a guy who clearly doesn't know / how to fight but the whole season be the first one to stick up for another. He's a penalty killing asset that is consistent in his defensive play. The guy is a solid 3rd/4th line player that other teams would be excited to have.

this is true if that 3rd line assignment is in connecticut. He's a FA. We'll see how excited and giddy teams are to add him. I really hope we see that.

He would be a horrible captain. One of our best players and outright best defenseman for sure, but would be horrible in the captain role. Staal would be mediocre at best, and Girardi a total fail.

Stepan definitely has potential, as does Nash (experience), and skip a year with no captain and Kreider would probably be the best of them all. But McD? I have much love for him, but he would totally suck as a captain. And yes, that's just an opinion, but it's a far more reality based opinion than one declaring otherwise. :p:

That's your opinion and then there's the 25 players who played with him for 2+ years at Wisconsin who unanimously named him team captain, and then there's guys on this team that have called him a leader... But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I agree completely. He also is young and should be with this team for a very long time which is another nice trait of a captain.

Though I hate to speculate because I really don't want Callahan to leave, I'm with you on this. McDonagh's here for a long time, he's already our best player at his position, he brings it every night, improves every season, and I could totally see him as reacting best to the responsibility meaning that some players take a step backward before really embracing the new role (see Getzlaf or Giroux), but with McDonagh it seems like the more asked of him, the better he gets, and I'd be excited to see if he would improve with the role.

I don't see how you could give it to anybody but McDonagh. He's the most important player on the team and he has the work ethic you want out of a guy. He's been a team captain before.

Dear god no. I don't think Stepan is captain material.

I will get laughed at for this but I think Brian Boyle would make a great captain.

Boyle's good in the locker room, right? I think I could groove to that, as well.

I do think Stepan could be Captain, though. He's definitely not an introvert.

I think Staal's effort and play the last games looks alot like the old Marc. He cares about Hank and all that details i want to see, and i think he would be qualified for an A.

For me, McDonagh and Girardi would both be good choices. Boyle should get an A. Screw the A's on Nash and Richards, never shouldve been there. They lack the effort i want to see at all times.

If Girardi resigns:

Girardi-C
McDonagh-A
Staal-A
Stepan-A

If Girardi doesn't resign:

McDonagh-C
Staal-A
Stepan-A
Kreider-A(Yes, I know, but I think he could be a future leader)

Excuses.

Dubinsky was a phenomenal example of a leader you could pick out by watching each game. Ask any Columbus fan who their leader is (they have 3 As) and the answer will be Dubinsky.

As a Jacket fan, I can tell you that you are wrong. Dubi is one of several players(JMFJ, Horton, Umby, Tyutin, Boll) that many consider our "leader" granted, but by no means is he our definitive leader. That's why the 3 A's works so well for us. We have a group of people that hold everyone & each other accountable as opposed to one underacheiving overpayed player.

I can't see how it won't be either Staal, Richards, or Girardi assuming one of them is still here. Has someone with an A ever been passed over for someone who never wore a letter?

The only examples I can think of are free agents and rookies.

When cAllahan asks for 7 mil and slats laughs at him as he should, brad Richards will be named captain

Not getting bought out

Callahan has been absolutely atrocious this year just awful. Completely unnoticeable unless he's making a mistake

Someone will pay him thru the nose and I really hope it isn't us.

Gotta keep Girardi

He won't sign anywhere for 7 million and he knows that.

He is on a .55 point per game pace. How is that unnoticeable? That is just .05 less then Krieder.

oh and

Stepan was the C on the WJC gold medal team in 2010. He could at some point, but no A yet even with injuries this season. Could see Staal or Girardi if signed. McDonagh is a good choice. Nash will be considered. Has worn an A this season. Wore C in Columbus.

In the end, if Callahan and Girardi are not here and Richards is bought out, Staal will get the C. Nash and A. The other is up for grabs. Step or McDonagh would get it. Also, we would have a lot of money to sign players. Maybe one of those players would be brought in and could be a leader.

Clarkson got 5.25 from Toronto. He left money on the table from Edmonton. So he probably could have gotten between 5.5 to 6mil. Callahan will probably get similar or more on the open market.

Are you smoking crack? Callahan since back has been very good, and one of the better forwards. So scoring a shorthanded highlight goal is not noticeable, which btw he has two clutch goals in the last 6 games. 6 points in his last 9 games, and a + 6 rating, so both ends of his game have been excellent. Yeah but he's not noticeable. :shakehead

Cally is not going to sign for 7 million, he likely is asking for 6 million but in reality he knows he'll get something around the mid 5 million. He wants to stay with this team.

He has had reduced ice time due to injuries and is finally getting PP time, which seemed to work for the Rangers since last 2 times the PP scored he was on the unit and made some plays to lead up to that goal. He really has 19 points in 33 games, He hardly played in that Nashville game when he got hurt. Is that excellent or Elite? No it's good for a 2nd line forward, around 45 to 50 points. Which is why he is going to make around 5 million and not over 7 million like Nash does.

The order we have seen currently is:
C- Cally
A- Staal
A- Richards
A- Girardi
A- Nash

I think if Cally and Richards (please) are gone Girardi jumps Staal in the line of succession because of durability. And I wouldn't mind that. Though McD is clearly the present and future and it would be a bold and awesome move to give him the C.
