He has had reduced ice time due to injuries and is finally getting PP time, which seemed to work for the Rangers since last 2 times the PP scored he was on the unit and made some plays to lead up to that goal. He really has 19 points in 33 games, He hardly played in that Nashville game when he got hurt. Is that excellent or Elite? No it's good for a 2nd line forward, around 45 to 50 points. Which is why he is going to make around 5 million and not over 7 million like Nash does.

I agree with everything but the 5 million. If he stays with the rangers it will probably be 5.65-6.25 range. He can probably get 6.5-6.8 on the open market for a team that needs leader ship. He will be sacrificing cup chances for a payday though and i doubt he goes that road. Unless he is traded i imagine he stays a Ranger. Also one of the first things to come out of Nash's mouth when getting here was how impressed he was with Cally as a captain.

You know the next captain is Rick Nash.. does Glen Sather have a say because if he does considering what they dealt for him, you know Sather will try to get his way.

It'll probably be Girardi or Staal.

C: Staal
A: Girardi
A: Nash

That's my guess.

I would go with

C: McDonagh
A: Staal
A: Girardi

Then in a few years

C: McDonagh
A: Kreider or Zucc if he keeps up. He has heart
A: Stepan
Hope they trade away Girardi because his gong to be to expensive for what he bring.
Otherwise I could not agreed more.
Those rookie Captains like Colorados Landeskog and Crosby and Ovie when they came in the league are just PR stunts.
Captains and alternates should be routinely guys who have been there for a while, and know hows to handle a referee and to really lead.
A man the younger assets look up to.

The odds are he will be back. Cally has indicated he wants to stay with the Rangers to win a cup, the guy has a lot of pride and I respect that. I don't see him walking for a few hundred thousand less. I think the media is blowing things out of proportion because he has not been extended yet. So yeah the longer they wait doubts are created.

As per trades, you trade away or sell guys not working in the system and playing poorly, are a cancer in the locker room, and if your team is losing and not in a playoff spot. Rangers have been playing the best in a long time, Cally has been a big part of that. I also said this in the other thread, AV trusts Cally, and gave him huge props for that short-handed goal, said it was a big one. So the writing on the wall is, coach is happy, organization is happy, lets keep our captain, please.

I give Staal the C for sure. Girardi keeps an A. Zucc cares the most out of anybody on this team. Give him another.

My choice:

C- Staal
A- Girardi
A- Zuccarello

in case of injury, move everybody up one, and make Boyle the next A.

What I think will actually happen:

C: Staal
A: Girardi
A: Nash

I agree 100%

I started this thread when we were losing a lot and blowing the team up still was something being hinted at. Its also just hypothetical.

I imagine we want to resign him before the deadline. After the deadline there is a HUGE power swing in negations. If he isn't willing to work with what we can afford before the deadline we might have to move him for fear of losing all his value. It will be a super sad day but its a part of the game.

That's in the range of what zucc produced after those first seven games. His on pace for 54 points.
Do he deserve 5 mill+? Not at all.Maybe 3 years at 3 mill each, as the last two are UFA years.

I'm sorry but not giving McDonagh a letter is ridiculous on so many levels. Who cares if they are all D.

It was more a toss out there. And not being in that locker room I feel very limited in commenting this. However.. McD never being given an A in the past or as a temp strikes me as odd and I get a feeling he may not be a guy who thrives leading his team off ice.

rangers would be silly not to resign Callahan.... he might demand a lot but I personally think hes worth it, especially because he IS the Captain. It would be AV's call and im scared he might chose Nash.

im not in any way against ryan callahan, but there comes a point where you need to understand true value over your personal feelings towards a player. compare callahan to players like dustin brown ($5.875m thru 2022), david backes ($4.5m thru 2017), even mike richards who is a much better player than callahan getting $5.750m. callahan can be closely comparable to brown and backes in terms of play but comes in at 3rd. i threw in richards based on raw numbers because, for the money mike richards gets, you see the quality of player you can have in your lineup. callahan is oft-injured, has similar numbers to dustin brown, and is most likely going to get a handsome raise. my thoughts and feelings for this team is there is no reason for callahan to get the same or more than brown's $5.875m. AT ABSOLUTE MOST, captain or not, should get $5.50m. thats the absolute max.

now people are going to obviously dislike my opinion and i expect that because people have grown attached to the guy, but lets be real. he's worth the right price, but not any more. I've heard enough rumors involving his name in trades and what not the past day or two, and i take it with a grain of salt, but just because he wears the 'C', doesn't make him safe. i fully expect him to stick around or through the deadline, and re-sign, but i won't be surprised if he doesn't.

if, in fact, he is gone, i expect nash, staal, or richards (if not bought out) would be named captain

Nah, your opinion holds a lot of weight, and you make good points.

Cally's production over the last few seasons (which is what they look at for re-signing) has been a better offensive producer than Brown. I don't think Cally should get 6 million, no way, but around 5.5 million seems fair and maybe 5 years.

Also, Brown is having a train wreck of a season, 17 points in like 50 games, ouch.

Anyway getting back to the topic, I think Ryan Callahan should be named captain next season. :p:
