If for whatever reason Callahan isn't a ranger next year who is the next captain?

Personally, I don't really care.

Besides talking to the refs, I think its sort of an overrated thing. Leaders are gonna lead regardless of the C on their jersey. Im not in the locker room, but I don't think this team has many off-ice leaders. Callahan is a quintessential on the ice leader.

Big difference between being a good player and a good leader. Can't just hand McD the C because he's our best player.

I do believe this is Henrik's team though, regardless of who's wearing the "C" on their chest.

What about McD screams captain to you guys? He's clearly our best player but what makes you say captain? I think we've had part of our problems over the years arise from totally dispassionate leaders. I don't think Zucc has proven enough to be an NHL captain, but I'd much rather have someone like him, where the fire that drives them is evident, than the xanax cocktail of Callahan/Staal/Richards/Nash/Stepan/McDonagh/Etc. Let's give the letters to people that are actually leaders for a change.

I would say Mcdonagh or Stepan...... Staal doesnt strike me as such a vocal leader but obviously I'm not in the locker room with theg guy, just like everyone else here.

What about McD screams captain to you guys?
Eaves saw something in him while he was playing at Wisconsin.....

Nobody on this team screams Captain to me.

Not a lot of great leadership on this team. At least not from the outside looking in.

What makes someone with evident fire (whatever that is) more of a leader than someone who doesn't?

As was stated earlier, leaders lead, regardless of what/if letter they have on their jersey. Other than talking to the refs, all the 'leadership' stuff happens away from the public eye so none of us really know who the leaders are.

You know the next captain is Rick Nash.. does Glen Sather have a say because if he does considering what they dealt for him, you know Sather will try to get his way.

I disagree. I think that's a myth that has been perpetrated as an excuse for the leadership we've had, who have been such vanilla, uninspiring personalities that we needed a way to believe they were doing more behind closed doors than we were seeing. Leadership, in actual fact, is something you can often see. Does that mean we need to see our leaders yelling and getting excited every night? No, but in the years Callahan has been captain, you would have seen some more impassioned verbal leadership - if there was any. Leading by the example of being a 'good soldier' and 'giving 110%' really isn't good enough. I'm sorry. I don't see any leaders on this team.

I guess Carcillo should be the next captain because last night, in a great and inspired game he was the most vocal player on the ice......

But really coaches who are in the locker room and see what goes on behind closed doors, which is pretty important in any sport, saw something in both Mcdonagh, and Stepan's game on and off the ice that led them to name each of them Captain of their teams, Mcdonagh on a great Wisconsin team and Step on a team full of the best American players in the game, they were both more than capable of leading those teams....

Not sure how, by definition, you can see verbal leadership. You most often see the results of leadership, not the leadership itself. Does Cally inspire others on the team? we really don't have a way of knowing without asking the players. Maybe he does but they can't lift their game above where it is, maybe he doesn't and they play aggressive, up-tempo hockey because that is the type of player they are.

There's no one mold for a leader, and leadership comes in many forms; to pretend we can pick out good and bad leaders from 2 and half hours of hockey every second day and few media tidbits is pretty far fetched IMO

Excuses.

Dubinsky was a phenomenal example of a leader you could pick out by watching each game. Ask any Columbus fan who their leader is (they have 3 As) and the answer will be Dubinsky. There isn't a single player like that on this roster.

I'm not denying there are different kinds of leadership. But non-verbal leadership tv example can only cut so much mustard. If you had two guys like Cally, Richie, G, Step or McD wearing the A, but a guy like Getzlaf or Backes or Brown wearing the C it would be a different story. You can't have a leadership core of Captain Quaalude Drurys. If you think there's a single fiery, stand up and call the team out kind of leader in that room, God bless you. You have much more faith in them than I do. If you happen to think its someone like Callahan and not a role player like Boyle or Dorsett, I think you may be drunk.

I could see us going for three As. Marc and DG would likely retain their titles. McD or Nash would be the most likely third assistant. A calm demeanor, strong work ethic, on-ice performance, community service / involvement, and NHL experience will likely be the determinants. Both players satisfy the first three of those five variables. I don't know to what extent either is involved in the community. Experience is where it gets tricky. For example: Is it based on number of years in the league (in which case Nash, all else equal, "wins") -- or is the number of playoff appearances more important (in which case McD, all else equal, "wins")? I do wonder, though, how the locker room would respond to either selection ...
