Not even remotely comparable...

Also a huge driving factor here for Dowd getting a 1st would be the fact that with 50% retention he'd only carry a $650k cap hit. That means getting your 4C for next year for $150k less than league minimum.

Evans even at 50% retention is still more than the $800k league minimum next year.
You really think 150k of cap savings is worth a 1st on a pedestrian 4C?

If that's the market for cheap quality 4Cs welcome to the trade block Jake Evans

Not as good of player and more expensive, but that extra year definitely ups the return with 50% retention. Having to retain on Edmundson and Petry makes it tougher this year. You’re probably better off retaining on Savard though since he’s still a pretty good #5 with a Cup to his name.

If that's the market for bottom-6 centers, goodbye Scott Laughton

Except 50% retention doesn’t even get you down to Dowd’s non retained salary.

I thought you can only retain down to league min?

Nope. The Oilers had Bjugstad at 450k last year

You really think 150k of cap savings is worth a 1st on a pedestrian 4C?

It’s more about having a guy for a year and half who’s worth 2 or 3 times what his caphit is. Look at what Tampa paid for Jeannot because he was only paid 800k

Dowd doesn’t play on the PP because he’s just an average 3rd liner. You can twist the 5v5 points as much as you want, Monahan is and always has been a far superior player while being younger and proven in the playoffs (lol 5 playoff points for Dowd). I mean Monahan has as many goals as Dowd has points this year. It’s just an asinine take and no GM in their right mind would prefer him over Monahan.
Monahan plays in all situations for Montreal. With Suzuki, coach’s other go-to guy. There was a question if his performance would be hindered by his operations and it hasn’t been much. He’ll still produce for the Jets. Everything rides on him staying healthy. That’s the Jets‘ gamble. Otherwise, he’s easily worth what they paid for.

As for Dowd, a first is a lot for an almost 34 year old whose career high is 25 points. No matter how effective.

Uhhhh, no he certainly does not. He actually has some of the very worst possession and xG metrics on the entire Capitals roster.

I still think he's solid defensively and plays tough minutes on a bad Caps team, but lets not start making complete nonsense up here
That's this season. He is now paired with basically a rookie in Malenstein and an average 4th liner in Aube Kubel.

Put him with legit players and his numbers will go back to what it was before. It's also a new system and slightly harder usage. I'd take my chances he gets back to breakeven in his role with upgraded wingers, which most likely contenders will have.

The draft must be really, really bad this year if teams are seriously considering a first rounder for Nic Dowd. I'm not sure he's worth a first if you could retain 100% of his salary.

I dont think dowd will net any sort of first rounder but I do feel like first round picks are generally overvalued here especially the picks in the latter portion of the first round.

Nice try leveraging media coverage to generate trade interest, but I don't think Nic Dowd at 100% retained is worth a first round pick.

There is always someone that, in an attempt to show everyone they are the smartest one in the room, proves to everyone they are definitely not the smartest one in the room.

A team's 7D doesn't dress for the game, dog.

Dowd is a very good 4th line centre, and if people think that doesn't matter, then...

Dowd + mid rd pick for a late 1st is within realm of possibilities, no matter how many times you write it. He’s not a run of the mill 4C. He’s been excellent this year, i thought it was common knowledge that his line has been WAS’s best by far

Just think about this in terms of proportionality compared to the Sean Monahan deal. Monahan returned a 1st and a 3d, is a UFA who can play 2C. Is Dowd so good that a team would pay a 1st for 2 years of a guy playing 4th line and the difference is a 3rd? I don't think so, but I guess you never know.
