Watch it again it's easier to see things a 2nd time.Matthews showed another side to his game.Lots of smart plays with puck.

I understand quite well how hockey works. Matthews generally has a few smart plays with the puck in a game. It's just, for the highest paid player in the league, you expect more. There's a reason the Leafs have one series win since the Matthews era started, a decade ago. He's not good in do or die situations.

Fair enough but that was a tough game out there tonite for everyone.Leafs issue was always defending and goaltending u ask me.Every time Bruins faced them I knew they would get good looks.You have a good team this season.

The only reason guys like the Tkachuk brother, Miller, Trocheck etc are able to be so competitive is because they’re following Matthews lead, who would walk through walls to win important games.

The 4 you mentioned were always competitive without matthews.

Canada beat the US by 1 goal with a prime luongo and a much better team then a much less talented team USA in 2010. Canada beat US by 1 goal with a prime Carey Price and a much better team with a less talented team USA in 2014. This loss is on binnington. If we had elite goaltending, we beat Sweden 3-2 and US 1-0, but don’t. Move on to hill and cross your fingers and toes

I got so much grief over Marner. For years I said Marner should NOT be on Team Canada. For YEARS I was ridiculed.

I heard how good he is. How you cannot leave those points at home. How LOTS of players bleep the bed in the playoffs but do wonderfully when playing for Canada.

Marner's NO LOOK pass 6 on 5... WOW!

We lost possession and the next thing you know, it was 3-1. What was Marner thinking? Oh yeah, as usual, he wasn't thinking.

And Crosby gave the puck away resulting in a 2 on 1 which resulted in the game winning goal. That said I agree with you. I was hard on Marner in the game thread and the Leafs fans came after me. But I stand by it. He was terrible on McDavid's line and I kept wanting Cooper to take him off. Plays kept dying on his stick and he's so weak, a USA player just glanced at him and he crumbled.

It's why when the playoffs hit Marner is absolutely invisible or noticeable for all the wrong reasons. It's a big reason why the Leafs have struggled so much in the post season. Teams easily shut him down and because Matthews has usually played with him, well, there you go. Shut down the set up guy, Matthews can't get the puck much so he struggles a lot as well.

They played terribly and lost. USA deserved to win. Stupid crowd booing the anthem still like that'll save our stupid country from whatever they fear so much. "Team Canada" is such a washed up organization now they would NOT be competitive in the Olympics either they would turn it into the LOLympics.

Agreed hundred percent .....said same thing and Narner has been trash fir 6 periods. Non contact 3 on 3 he bagged one.

Marner wasnt great bad but they lost as a team and blame can go to several other players as well.

He is basically a phenomenal player according to Cooper. This isn't the regular season, Marner is a pure regular season performer. I would have chosen Tom Wilson over Marner on this Canadian team.

They knew if it got physical mitch would dissapear .

Marner wasn't great but who was? Seems odd to single him out. Reinhart has been 100% worse, can't even handle a puck at least Marner is trying to make things happen.

Matthews hasn't scored, but he's been tasked to be the shutdown center and did a good job of keeping McDavid pretty quiet all night.

All in all, thread is pretty easy to see as what it is. Won't say the word...

Goalie is always the easy out but he more than made up for the questionable ones with the massive saves later.

Pretty hard to blame the goalie when the most talented team on the planet can only give him one goal.

He wasnt even the biggest issue on his line last night. Reinhart got pulled off the line near the end of the 2nd but I don't blame you for not noticing him outside of his blown coverage on the first US goal.

I have no issue with Marner making the team. I have a problem with Cooper relying on him in your top 6 and even worse on your top line. Marner should be on the 4th line for his defensive abilities. Cooper keeping the Reinhart-McDavid-Marner line together like it's his bread and butter is comical.

It's quite obvious why the Leafs have been struggling for the past many years comes the playoffs. Matthews and Marner have no hustle whatsoever in them. I hope for their fans, they don't pay him 12m+ next July. I would 100% trade him and get whatever I can get. Yes, he's very talented, but won't make you win important games.

It was a hard, defensive game. One mistake led to the GWG and the rest of the game it looked like players were skating in sand.

Skill guys did not do well.

First off, we have to acknowledge the goal he scored. It was clutch and he was the last guy I believed would score it. Props to him.

Outside of that he’s been invisible outside of a few nice passes. His brand of hockey doesn’t work when things get tight. When the opposition clogs the zone he can’t adjust to a North South game. He’s not really a shooter either.

Before the tournament I said I wouldn’t have included him. I certainly wouldn’t have played him in the top six.

I hope he produces. I hope he gets a hat trick in the next two games. He scored big goal already so maybe he can do it again. But in my mind, anything he contributes is a bonus.

That doesn't make any sense.

If he's strong defensively don't you want him matching up against the opponent's good players? Like how Matthews was lined up against McDavid last night.

In any case, I think it's obvious that going into this tournament it was penciled in for many fans that if the US lost it would be Matthews' fault. And if Canada lost it would Marner's (and Canada's choice of goaltending, but at least that one's fair).

You’re crazy. Matthews is a pure natural warrior. Without his example of a true compete level, guys like the Tkachuk brothers wouldn’t know how to do it.

That type of compete isn’t as natural to them as it is to Matthews. The guy is a never say die bulldog.

Matthews has been a ****ing stiff. Couldn't believe how quiet McKinnon was.
