You're going overboard.

The guy scored the game winner in game one. As much as I'm skeptical and wasn't in favour of him coming on board you have to acknowledge that he did come up big. Harping on one play is silly too.
As a Leaf fan, it's NOT just one play. It is year after year after year of playoff bloopers / disappearing acts.

Anyway, I am happy to EAT CROW so, again, let me know when it is served. :)

Well the Marner thread is here. Marner is also killing penalties on PK1
I think with Marner the expectations have been so high for so long and he's always underperformed. With Reinhart, he's been to two cup finals and has a ring.

Drilling into the numbers Reinhart's playoffs have been okay... not bad but not great. But he puts up decent goal numbers in the postseason. So I understand that selection. He put up 57 goals last year and looks to be on pace for 50. So yeah, you take that guy.

Marner has always fallen away at critical points. I'd take him in any regular season hockey pool but in the playoffs I wouldn't touch him. Is that unfair? I don't think so. Every player has to prove themselves and earn the respect. He just hasn't done that. And that's why I wasn't really in favour of including him on the roster.

Kudos to him though, big goal in game one. Let's see what he does for the rest of the series.

Marner is a guy when he's relaxed he's fantastic. When Canada had that powerplay early on, he showed how good he can be.

But when there's pressure on him, he really crumbles harder than most. He just doesn't know how to adapt his game to the extra intensity, he'll panic and start forcing things, either thinking too fast or taking too long. His rhythm gets completely thrown off.
Correct.

And he can't adjust when the games get tight. You can't always play an East West game. Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty. He hasn't shown that he can do that.

Mitch is uber talented and being "fancy" during the regular season pays off because the games are not tight or physical. Then he tries the same "fanciness" in tight / hard games and it comes back to haunt his team.

I wish he'd learn but he won't.

Yeah, he doesn't seem to be the most adaptable superstar player. I remember being pissed during the CLB series back in 2020 that the Leafs weren't showing willingness to change their style even though it wasn't proving to be very effective. He didn't score a single goal in that series or the one against MTL the following year.

Dude....

No chance you eat crow.

He literally has the biggest moment of any player on team Canada in the Tourney. The most clutch moment on the team. The most memorable team Canada goal in years. Half the other forwards on the team are ACTUAL disappointments.

We live in the age where no one can take an L though. This thread may be even dumber than thinking this tourney wasnt going to be fireworks (I hope that wasnt you too)

Tough to tell what exactly he was going for here, and there was a much simpler and safer play right in front of him

There it is.....they finally found something to justify all the hate!!!!!!

I love the insanity of all this though. We've been missing it for years.

Top 5 most important players on the team so far:

McDavid
Crosby
Marner
Toews
Stone

Top 5 disappointments:

Point
Reinhart
MacKinnon
Konecny
Jarvis

You are missing the point. You do NOT make a NO LOOK pass at that moment but, of course, Marner did. Again, if I'd asked the posters who would do exactly THAT before the tournament, Mitch would have won in a landslide. :)

Yes...but Matthews back checked once and Sportsnet wet themselves from here to the Jersey Shore.
A defensive juggernaut!!!
Making a NO LOOK pass, when you have full possession, 6 on 5, with 2 minutes left and an empty net...

Who does that? Answer : Good ole Mitch.

I think there's truth to this.

He seems to lack the attributes needed to adequately handle pressure and overcome strong resistance.

Sure, he's not the biggest guy and he relies more on finesse than physicality, but he doesn't exactly shine in terms of skill or creativity when the going gets tough, either. Maybe it's a mental or psychological thing. Maybe he simply doesn't have the make-up to be a hero.

That said, he hasn't been terrible in this tournament, and he did score that one big goal. I don't think his play warrants being singled out, even if he did make a stupid pass late in the game.

He doesn’t get mad he gets sad. If someone gets in his face and yells he looks like he’s on the verge of tears. There was a moment in the Florida series where Tkachuk went at him and Marner looked genuinely surprised and emotionally hurt by the fact that his old buddy would do such a thing to him.

Game gets tight and coach starts yelling, teammates start yelling, opponents start doing everything they can to throw you off, and Mitch gets stuck in that fight or flight panic mode that makes him do some of the dumbest shit you’ve ever seen.

^^ Too funny. ^^

He gets that look as if to say....

"Don't you realize how talented I am? If not, my dad will be happy to tell you so backoff".

Also a Leaf fan, and while I am not watching this tournament you are correct about Mitch in general.

He's dominant in the RS because defenses give him enough space to utilize his extraordinary IQ and vision; if you give Mitch Marner space to operate he'll make you pay for it. In the playoffs, when things tighten up, he doesnt have the physical ability or mental toughness to consistently create his own space to operate, and he pouts when things aren't going his way.

Leafs are going to re-sign him because they aren't a serious franchise and everyone knows it. He sells jerseys and that's enough to the corporate ownership.

Never seen someone cry so much about an individual play. Sorry that Mitch hurt your feelings so badly.
Something else that's funny... and true....

On Friday, I was swimming with a friend (we are both Leaf fans) and he said (paraphrasing), "Wait for Marner to do something stupid when it matter most. He should NOT be on this team".

After Mitch's give away, he emailed me...

Mitchy gives puck away again when goalie is out.....

We've laughed about it since.

I wonder what will happen to this post if Marner channels his inner Paul Henderson and scores the winning goal in the next two games?

There's a guy open right after the net, clearly no experience in tough games, i get he might get a lucky pass off if there's a guy waiting behind, but still that is a brutal mistake.
