Lone Star is Dallas.

Sam Houston is Houston.

Retama is San Antonio.
Horses coming from Texas.
Cant compete on the East coast.
Weather it’s Fairgrounds or Gulf.

Lee Thomas, who is a good trainer.
Had Irad on a horse coming in from Texas.
The other day at Gulf.
The public made him the favorite.
A horrible choice.
Didn’t hit the board.

I‘ve been seeing horses coming East for a few years
and they are not very good.

Hosting the Breeders' Cup was partly designed to lift Texas racing but that never materialized. The industry has been stagnant there. But now comes word of casino approval latched onto racing's interests and the related elevation of purse money, perhaps breeding. Texas isn't a national power currently. Hopefully that changes.

Oaklawn is the regional leader right now.

  • Steve Asmussen went 12 0-0-1 today. Not productive at all. He remains three wins shy of 10,000.
  • Court Ruling: A federal judge ko'd Bob Baffert's case against Churchill Downs. As stated, the suspension of Baffert from all CD properties remains in effect through the Kentucky Derby this year. Unless another appeals attempt occurs, Baffert's horses will have to be transferred to other barns in order to attempt in the Derby and prior to that any prep races.
Meylan (Dubai, UAE):
  • William Buick-Charlie Appleby teamed to win three of the seven races.

  • Mimi Kakushi (Mickael Barzalona/Salem bin Ghadayer) won the UAE Oaks and with it received 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Oaks.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Jose Lezcano rode a natural hat trick late in the card, twice winning for Linda Rice who finished 4 2-1-1 today.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Chris Hartman entered one race and won. His meet numbers have been fantastic. He is currently 59 21-11-10 (36%/71%). This is Oaklawn, not exactly a small-time operation.
  • Norm Casse is another trainer with a hot barn. His meet numbers are 18 10-2-1 (56%/72%). His father is dual Hall-of-Famer Mark Casse.
  • Big-Name Trainers Struggling: A wide array of well-established trainers are finding it tough to win as Steve Asmussen, Wayne Lukas, Joe Sharp, Karl Broberg are among those under 10%.
  • Race 2: Pout (Rafael Bejarano/Nick Zito) was sent off the favorite and wired the field. The victory ended a dismal losing streak of 119 in a row for the Hall of Fame trainer who last found the winner's circle in July 2021 at Belterra (Cincinnati).

1677545963799.png
1677545983344.png
Santa Anita (California):
  • Kent Desormeaux rode winners in the first two races, his lone mounts.

Monomoy Girl, purchased for $9.5 million in 2020, delivered her first baby yesterday -- a colt to Into Mischief.

Mommy was 17 14-3-0 lifetime and earned over $4 million.

Saturday, February 18. 2022 -- more to come
  • Brad Cox was 17 5-2-2 today. Among his wins was number 2,000. He is over 30% in 2023.
  • Steve Asmussen was 25 2-4-5 which is part of a 37 2-4-6 result the past two days. He is one short of 10,000 victories.
  • Todd Pletcher went 10 3-1-1 and won two graded stakes.
  • Avery Whisman: The jockey who passed away a few days ago was the recipient of tributes across the land from fellow riders.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Manny Franco rode three winners.
  • Race 7: One of the tightest finishes of the day:

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: Six stakes including two graded among a 10-race card.
  • Race 8: Swayin to and Fro (Richard Monterrey/Mario Serey, Jr.) won the $250,000 Grade 3 Barbara Fritchie Stakes. It was the first graded stakes win for the vet rider who once quit the game for about five years when his weight rose to 150 pounds. Good story! Monterrey said following the race "Very difficult filly. Got to get on her (in the morning) to know her." The filly loves Laurel with a 9 7-1-1 mark among 16 starts. The South Carolina bred 4-year-old is the first horse to win a graded stakes from her home state.
1676783139613.png

  • Race 9: Eastern Bay (William Humphrey/Norman Cash) won the Grade 3 $250,000 General George Stakes. The rider, from England and I believe to be under the age of 21, seemed very humble and respectful. It was the fifth time he rode the horse to victory among eight rides since April. Hall of Famer Javier Castellano rode the 9-year-old gelding the last two times out. Eastern Bay is 53 19-7-5 including 13-for-35 at Laurel. Another good story as this was the young rider's first graded stakes victory. Cash, a large man, is in the roofing business and training is something recent in his profession. He donated the saddle cloth to the family of Avery Whisman, a local rider who died recently.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $16 million.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had a masterful day going 11 4-4-1.
  • 1-11-111: There were 111 tickets alive for the Pick 6 heading into the final race but just one ticket could have taken the entire jackpot but that hope was defeated. Thus 1 ticket was singled and that was the 11 among 111 other possible winners.
  • Race 11: Classy Edition (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Royal Delta Stakes.

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Card: 13 races including four graded stakes.
  • Luis Saez rode three winners including two graded stakes.
  • Races 4 and 5: Florent Geroux-Brad Cox teamed to win consecutive races that were both Maiden Special Weight. Cox has a factory of resources.
  • Race 10: Pioneer of Medina (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) won the Grade 3 $250,000 Mineshaft Stakes.

  • Race 11: Two Emmys (James Graham/Hugh Robertson) looked exceptional in winning the Grade 3 $150,000 Fair Grounds Stakes. The gelding has earned over $900,000. He was acquired by Robertson and Wolfe Racing for $4,500.

  • Race 12: Pretty Mischievous (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) won the Grade 2 $300,000 Rachel Alexandra at 8-to-1. Hoosier Philly (Edgar Morales/Tom Amoss) finished a bad third following a layoff since November and as a heavy favorite who was garnering much attention as a filly with Kentucky Derby potential.

  • Race 13: Angel of Empire (Luis Saez/Brad Cox) won the Grade2 $400,000 Risen Star Stakes and with it earned a massive 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The colt was bred in Pennsylvania. He has alternated wins with losses in five starts with his prior two wins at Horseshoe Indianapolis (IN). The $70,000 purchase has already earned $330,000.

1676786510708.png
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: Exceeded $10 million.
  • Race 9: Last Samurai (Cristian Torres/Wayne Lukas) won the Grade 3 $600,000 Razorback Handicap. The 5-year-old has just five wins in 23 starts but has amassed more than $1.6 million in earnings. It was the first graded stakes win for Torres. It was the 638th graded stakes win for Lukas.

  • Race 10: The finale returned over $42,000 for all successful $.50 Pick 5 bets.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Frankie Dettori had a 4-win day and teamed with Frenchman Leonard Powell to go a perfect 2-for-2 including winning the feature race. Powell entered today with just two wins in 2023.

  • Steve Asmussen's quest for 10,000 career wins has hit a snag. He went 8 0-3-2 today at Sam Houston (TX) and Oaklawn (AR) combined. The past three days, he recorded an almost implausible 45 2-7-8 mark.
  • Todd Pletcher added three wins to his impressive career.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 8: Cairo Sugar (Andrew Wolfsont/Alan Bedard) won the $100,000 Maddie May Stakes as the excessively longest shot on the board at 27-to-1. The jockey is an infrequent visitor to NYRA and rides elsewhere in the mid-Atlantic such as Penn National (PA).

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 7: Approximately $70,000 bet into the abbreviated wagering options. An extremely low total after two scratches.
  • Hamilton Smith, at the age of 82, sent out two horses and both returned as winners. The South Carolina native is 9-for-31 this year (29%), a winning percentage nearly double his career average. He broke his maiden in 1977 at Suffolk Downs (MA).

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had another multi-win day. He has 10 wins the past three days.
  • Wednesday's Pick 6: A guarantee $900,000 available. Gulfstream (and Tampa Bay) are not racing holiday Monday or Tuesday. Both tracks will return to live racing on Feb. 22.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 4: Alice Marble (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) won the $100,000 Wishing Well Stakes. The rider, surprisingly struggling at the meet, should get credit by splitting horses approaching the stretch. Prat exercised the horse in morning workouts and convinced the trainer, who excels on grass, to try dirt.

The top 15 trainers per Equibase, based on career wins.

As an aside, King Leatherbury has sent out one horse this year. He has entered horses in eight straight decades. He turns 90 years of age next month.

Kentucky Derby updates with Bob Baffert not permitted at Churchill Downs' properties until after the 2023 Kentucky Derby.

Arabian Knight, Carmel Road and Hejazi have been moved from Bob Baffert's barn to the Tim Yakteen stable.

Fort Warren has been transferred to.... Brittany Russell.

  • Florida Dark: The two Florida tracks were dark this holiday Monday. Most other majors ran today.
  • Tote Delays: Mahoning Valley (OH), Laurel (MD), Oaklawn (AR) and Parx (PA) were among tracks suffering from a Tote delay late in the day. Whatever the reason, it seemed to affect Mahoning mostly.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Anthony Farrior had three wins. The trainer is scoring at a 29% clip this year, his best in 10+ years with a license.
  • Arnaldo Bocachica won the opener and finale. He is 26 10-6-3 (38%/73%) at the meet.
  • Luis R. Rivera, Jr. won for the first time in the States in his first year of riding and through today has seven mounts. His pro career started at Camarero (PR).
  • Jorge Hernandez entered today 1-for-32 in the USA in his first year of riding here but won with both mounts including a 99-to-1 shot. He is 33 years old and had been riding in Chile.
  • Race 5: Rascally Rebel (Jorge Hernandez/Mario Serey, Jr.) recorded a $205.80 winner at odds of 101-to-1 (99-to-1 on the board). The $1 exacta was $2,774.10. The $.50 tri was more than $13,000. The $1 super returned more than $24,000 with a 56-to-1 shot finishing in fourth.

  • Race 4: Draining the Circle (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) won as the overwhelming 2-to-5 favorite. The horse has been getting some distant Kentucky Derby vibes. Said the fabulous Mrs. Russell prior to the race “It’s early in his 3-year-old year, so if he decides to step up and really start doing things right one can dream, right?”

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Cristian Torres-Robertino Diodoro are 11 6-4-0 the past four days as a tandem.
  • Cristian Torres had a 5-win day including a perfect 3-for-3 for Robertino Diodoro. The jockey has 10 wins the past three days including a remarkable 16 8-2-2 mark yesterday and today combined.

  • Bet He's Ready (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) provided the trainer with his10,000th victory -- the most in North America history. Asmussen's quest for 10,000 career wins hit a snag earlier this weekend with 33 straight non-wins. The past four days, he recorded an almost implausible 55 3-11-9 mark but that is moot now. The win figure is mesmerizing.
1676941040236.png

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 2: Sonoran (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) beat among other his runner-up stable mate Castle Island (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert). Don Corleone -- what a moniker! -- was a $1.25 million purchase but he finished fourth.

There is a singular Kentucky Derby prep on Saturday and the winner receives a meaningful 50 points towards entry into the race. The Rebel Stakes is the 11th race on Saturday's card at Oaklawn and it appears to be an outstanding race in which to handicap. This is the third of four Derby preps at the splendid track in Arkansas.

Here is a shocker. The Breeders' Cup continues its Kentucky-California rotation. Back to Del Mar. Hard to argue with the selection. Great location. But it seems unless Belmont (NY) gets involved following completion of renovations, the Breeders' Cup will select between Keeneland, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita and Del Mar.

  • Quiet Day: Most majors had a day off with many choosing to race on holiday Monday earlier this week. Fair Grounds (LA), Mahoning Valley (OH) and Gulfstream (FL) were among the rare exceptions going today.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $8 million+.
  • Rainbow Six: A $1,000,000 guaranteed jackpot. At least that is what I think I saw on a quick flash.
  • Race 8: Naruto (Kevin Krigger/Eddie Plesa. Jr.) won at 50-to-1. The $.20 Pick 6 in the following race paid $62,000.
