If the opener at Gulf is an indication, a closer to the outside won. 20-1 m/l bet down in half roughly with Tyler Gaffalione on board for Kelsey Danner.

Contrary to popular belief regarding first-timers under the care of Bill Mott, Scotland rocked in Race 4 at Gulf. Scotland benefitted from a perfectly timed ride by Junior Alvarado. Mott is just 8% with such runners this year and reputation-wise has a wait-and-see approach. This 3-year-old is gelded.

  • Todd Pletcher finished 19 5-2-3 across Gulfstream and Aqueduct combined.
  • Chad Brown finished 20 4-5-1 across Gulfstream and Aqueduct combined. Brown was winless in graded stakes in 2023 until a 2-bagger today.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 8: Little Vic (Carlos Olivero/Juan Avila) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Tom Fool. The jockey gets limited mounts but is 33% this year.
  • Race 9: Raise Cain (Jose Lezcano/Ben Colebrook) destroyed the competition at 23-to-1 to win the $300,000 Grade 3 Gotham Stakes. This is a Kentucky Derby prep race worth 50 points to the winner. Track handicapper Andy Serling hit the exacta straight with 23-to-1 and 6-to-1 atop a ticket.
  • Brittany Russell has two formerly trained horses of Bob Baffert's barn but both were scratched.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jaime Rodriguez/Jamie Ness) teamed three times and each was a winner. A formidable duo.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $36,000,000+.
  • Card Eight of the 14 races were graded stakes and prices were found. Eight different jockeys won those races while Todd Pletcher, Michael Maker and Chad Brown each won twice among trainers.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had another 3-win day.
  • Kelsey Danner sent out two horses and both won.
  • Race 6: Mylady (Edgard Zayas/Chad Brown) topped a ticket in which the trainer finished 1-2-4-.
  • Race 9: Danse Macabre (Adam Beschizza/Kelsey Danner) won the Grade 3 $200,000 Hercomesthebride Stakes at odds of 12-to-1. I don't recall Beschizza, who hails from England and rides in Kentucky and Louisiana, ever riding at Gulf.
  • Race 10: Endorsed (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) earned the win in an upset that featured Charge It (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher).
  • Race 12: Dorth Vader (Miguel Vasquez/Michael Yates) pulled the biggest upset of the day by winning the $200,000 Grade2 Davona Dale Stakes. The $2 exacta paid $1,880.60 with 46-to-1 and 28-to-1 shots topping the ticket. This is a Kentucky Oaks prep race.

  • Race 14: Forte (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher), champion 2-year-old, looked potent in winning the $400,000 Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes. The victory awarded connections 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby and as of now the winner is the top choice of many. Forte is 6 5-0-0 lifetime. The son to Violence sold for $110,000 and has already earned over $1.8 million.

Turfway (Kentucky):
  • Race 6: Botanical (Chris Landeros/Brad Cox) won the $150,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes. This is a Kentucky Oaks prep.
  • Race 8: Congruent (Sonny Leon/Antonio Sano) broke last in a field of 12 at 16-to-1 but rallied strongly to win the $150,000 John Battaglia Memorial. This is a Kentucky Derby prep.

  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $29,000.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $21 million.
  • Card: Four of the 12 races were graded stakes.
  • Phil D'Amato trained three winners.
  • Race 6: Practical Move (Ramon Vazquez/Tim Yakteen) won the $400,000 Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes and with it earned 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby,

  • Race 12: Stiletto Boy (Kent Desormeaux/Ed Moger, Jr.) won the Grade I $500,000 Santa Anita Handicap. There was over $2 million added to the Rainbow 6 Pool. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $200,000 to nine different winning tickets. The $.50 Pick 5 returned over $104,000.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jamie Ness, Brittany Russell, Anthony Farrior and Hammy Smith are among those trainers with exceptional meets.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Vernon Bush entered the day 1-for-18 in 2023 yet won two of his three rides today. Bush won the Randy Romero Courage Award earlier this year for riders who have overcome various obstacles and persevered. Earlier this month, he won a race at Tampa Bay for the first time since 2014. Both were $53 wins and for trainer Jennifer Hayford who was 3-for-159 dating back to 2018. Good day for former connections to New England's now shuttered tracks of Rockingham (NH) and Suffolk Downs' (MA). The second winner was one of pure adrenaline!

1678070790983.png

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $19.5 million. Gulf handled more than $56 million the past two days.
  • Rainbow Six: The Jackpot exceeded $6.1 million when $5.2 million was added. All winners collected $40,000+,
  • Race 5: My Sweet Affair (Irad Ortiz, Jr./George Weaver) won a five furlongs turf race from the far outside post position 14. The also eligible was ridden by top rider Ortiz who had a second scheduled mount in the race. He may have known something special about this horse. To win from the outside at Gulf in a debut sends a signal.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $10 million.
  • Phil D'Amato won with the first three starters he sent out.
  • Tim Yakteen won four of his past five races the last two days. His total was 9 4-0-1.
  • Race 3: Faiza (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) galloped home to win the Grade 3 $100,000 Santa Ysabel Stakes. She is a perfect 4 4-0-0 and is establishing herself as one of the top horses in the land. This is a Kentucky Oaks prep race.

  • Race 5: Motorious (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 3 $100,000 San Simeon Stakes.

Shesterkin and Tapit Trice are among the probables for Saturday's Tampa Bay Derby which awards 50 points to the winner towards entry into the Kentucky Derby.

Tapit Trice has intrigued me since Day One. Having Tapit as a sire is always a positive.

Shesterkin is a Violence colt and the sire has been on my watch list for a while.

Both are trained by Todd Pletcher and anything he touches these days are to be considered. He is in a groove even more so than the usual.

Tampa usually releases cards for Saturdays late Wednesdays.

The card should be good. I don't see the Derby to be deep like the Gotham but that could change when the race is revealed.

@MiamiScreamingEagles Check out the computer generated betting article
on the Paulick Report.
Read it and sent it along to others who may be of interest.

Saturday at Laurel, I saw Jamie Ness at 14-to-1 late in the betting window. While Laurel's pools can't match NYRA, the odds were cut to 8-to-1 coming out of the gate.

This figure is just staggering: While just 9.7 percent of the successful win bets were placed in these final four cycles, almost 66 percent of the winning exacta bets were placed in those last seconds.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Manny Franco won his first four rides en route to a 5-win day. He is the runaway leader among riders this meet which ends March 26.
  • Rob Atras sent out four horses and each returned as winners. An almost impossible task.
  • Race 7: Dame Cinco (Manny Franco/Rob Atras) nosed Alpine Queen (Jaime Torres/John Toscano) with a perfectly timed finish to give the rider his fifth win this day.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Brittany Russell has some nice young guns and her talent was on display today. She trained three winners and maybe could have won more. Jevian Toledo rode all three winners.
  • Jamie Ness added two wins to his fantastic meet.
  • Race 1: Uncle Jake (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) broke his maiden in his second effort. The former Bob Baffert trainee, at a $675,000 purchase price, wired the field by more than nine lengths. Keep an eye out for his next run.

  • Race 3: Goodgirl Badhabits (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) debuted to a 12 3/4 length win. Keep an eye on her next start.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Chad Brown sent out two horses and both won. With a win at AQU he had a 3-win day. Maybe his barn is heating.
  • Antonio Sano sent out two horses and both won.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Cristian Torres won four times including his final three rides. He is the top jockey at the meet.
  • Robertino Diodoro finished 5 3-1-1. He is the leading trainer at the meet.
  • Race 3: Under the Gun (Keith Asmussen/Steve Asmussen) was the largest odds on the board at 17-to-1 yet prevailed. It was the 14th win for the jockey. It was the 10,021st win for the trainer. They are son-father, respectively.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Canceled: Incelement weather.

Race 5 at Gulf has two first-time starters by Bill Mott including an Arrogate colt and a second-time starter named Dreamlike by Todd Pletcher who looks like a star already. That colt, by Gun Runner, cost Mike Repole $975,000. Ian Wilkes has the m/l favorite. Looks like a good race.

Good score. One of Mott's first-timer's won at 23-1. Pletcher placed. Mott finished the tri.
