  • Lone First Time Starters: Won at Oaklawn, Aqueduct and Gulfstream very early in the day. None was a large price, however.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Linda Rice entered three races and won each. Rice is the leading trainer in wins at the Aqueduct winter meet with 32. Her current win streak sits at seven which is one of the NYRA record. Today she sent out four horses including two in the seventh race. Per the DRF "The record for most consecutive races won by a trainer on the NYRA circuit is believed to be eight. Those who have accomplished that include John Parisella in 1973, Angel Penna Sr. in 1982, Oscar Barrera in April 1983 and Edward Kelly in October 1983.:
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jamie Rodriguez tied two other riders (done 1969 and 2002) for most wins in one day at the 112-year-old facility. Rodriguez almost improbably won the first five races on the card. The top rider for Jamie Ness won four times on five mounts for the trainer who ended with four wins himself.
1679098122053.png
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Chad Brown sent out two horses and both won. As stated yesterday, his barn has heated. He has now won six of his past eight races.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won three times, something that seems mundane these days.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):

Santa Anita (California):
  • Favorites Hot: The chosen horses won seven times out of 10 races, including winning the final six.
  • Race 10: Window Shopping (Flavien Prat/Richard Mandella), a $700,000 American Pharoah filly, won by 16 1/2 lengths in her second race She likely will be points to bigger things..

Linda Rice's streak has ended at Aqueduct.

Jaime Rodriguez's sizzling day yesterday has continued with two wins, so far, including a 25-to-1 bomber. Laurel is in mid-card.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Linda Rice's attempt to join history and four trainers to win eight straight races failed with her first attempt (she had won seven); however, she did win three times in the five races she sent out a horse. She has won 10 of her past 12 races (includes multiple horses in a race).
  • Jose Lezcano rode Linda Rice's horses to three wins. He has won eight of his past 10 rides for her.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jaime Rodriguez is 22 12-1-4 the past three days at Laurel.
  • Stakes: Half the card of 10 races featured stakes.
  • Race 9: Hayes Strike (Horacio Karamanos/Kenny McPeek) won the $100,000 Private Terms Stakes in a good race featuring a solid field. The next step could be a Kentucky Derby prep. I sat on this race with Brittany Russell's Circling the Drain who finished third. Two horses on my distant Kentucky Derby radar.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $15.9 million.
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode three winners.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: This is almost cruel. The handle was $9,999,628. Just $372 shy of $10 million. Good track!
  • Race 8: Tejano Twist (Francisco Arriets/Chris Hartman) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Whitmore.
  • Race 9: Last Samurai (Cristian Torres/Wayne Lukas) won the $500,000 Grade 3 Essex, the day's biggest purse in No. America.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $11 million.
  • Bob Baffert entered two races and won both times. He finished 4 2-1-1. Both winners were in MSW. Tahoe Surprise and Pleasant both were out for the first time and ridden by John Velazquez.

  • Bombs: High prices at many tracks throughout the day.
Sha Tin (Hong Kong):
  • Voyage Bubble won the $3.1 million (US) Hong Kong Derby at odds of 45-1. Good ride.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 1: Perfect Senorita (Dalton Brown/Norman Follett) was the lone first-time starter and was sent off 25-to-1 in a victory. The jockey had a mount for just the 13th time since the start of last year and his most recent victory came in May 2022. The trainer sends out few horses and has just 112 wins in more than 30 years of training.
  • Race 5: Surprise Boss (Trevor McCarthy/Rafael Romero) was the longest shot on the board at 35-to-1 yet prevailed to send exotic wagering through the roof. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $68,000. The winner was nearly unplayable with all three wins coming on turf and this a dirt race. He hugged the rail in a solid ride. The trainer is in his third year and sends horses most to Philly or Florida.

  • Race 6: The $1 Pick 3 paid over $2,500.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $35,000. The $1 Pick 6 returned more than $38,000.
  • Linda Rice cooled off somewhat today as she struggled with seconditis. Her day ended 10 1-5-1.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Jaime Rodriguez added two wins to his impressive weekend in which he won 11 of 21 rides.b He was eventually named Jockey of the Week in North America.
  • Race 7: Three Over Deuces (Jeiron Barbosa/Gary Capuano) ended the day with a 55 8-20-10 lifetime mark after a victory. Te 8-year-old had dropped 14 straight races but was 1-6-1 in his past nine races.
  • Race 4: Classier (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) was under the tutelage of a new trainer shipped from Bob Baffert's barn who had the likes of Mike Smith, John Velazquez, Flavien Prat and Florent Geroux ride. The $775,000 horse has earned under $200,000 in a subpar career. Maybe Russell can find a home for him. His last win came in a Grade 3 at Los Al in 2021.
Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Race 1: Ginger Sparkle (Brittany Scampton/Jeffrey Crooks) finished with a nice rally to overtake two horses battling for the lead entering the stretch. The jockey last won a race in February 2021 as she rides infrequently.

  • Race 7: Expect To Be Ready (Jeremy Alicea/Tony Wilson) won by a nose at 33-to-1.
  • Kathleen O'Connell, recently dubbed the winningest female trainer in No. Am. history, sent out two horses and both returned winners under the skillful hands of Antonio Gallardo.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $11.9 million.
  • Chad Brown won with his lone starter. He has now won seven of his past nine races at Gulf.
  • Race 10: Captain Jack (Yoel Navas/Ian Wilkes) won at 35-to-1 and gave the 20-year-old exercise rider his first career win with his first mount. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $40,000. The obligatory ritual followed to salute the first win for the rider.

Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Alex Centeno entered the day with three wins on 47 rides this year. He completed a 4-win day today by winning the card's last three races.
  • Tanner Tracy won three times with Alex Centeno riding his horses and he won an additional time at Fair Grounds today for a 4-win day.He entered today with just four wins in 2023. That total is now doubled.
  • Race 3: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $2,200.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Keith Asmussen rode three winners for the best day of his young career. Two winning rides for his father Steve who sent out 10 horses at three tracks and also won three times.
Sunland (New Mexico):
  • Race 6: The $1 trifecta was a staggering $8,000+ with an 8-to-1 shot topping the ticket. Among the most shocking payouts of the young year.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 3: The Chosen Vron (Hector Berrios/Eric Kruljac) does what he does best: win. He is now 15 11-1-2 with six straight wins after a victory in the $100,000 Sensational Star.

Santa Anita has canceled racing on Friday because of significant rain on Tuesday and will race from Saturday through Monday this week in an effort to conduct three programs that include use of the turf course.
In an already rain-soaked year, Southern California was hit with a significant rainstorm Tuesday, with more forecast later on Tuesday and into early Wednesday. Track officials project Santa Anita will sustain two to three inches of rain from the storm, which would strongly jeopardize turf racing on Friday.
Santa Anita said in a statement that it reached the decision to shift the racing schedule after consulting with owner, jockey, and trainer organizations and the California Horse Racing Board.
Entries for Saturday will be taken on Wednesday as originally scheduled. Entries for Sunday and Monday will be taken on Thursday. Racing secretary Jason Egan said on Tuesday that Friday’s canceled races will be offered for the Sunday and Monday programs.
Santa Anita has canceled eight days of racing this winter during a time California has had higher than normal rainfall following drought in recent years. Monday’s program will be the third makeup day of the season. The track plans to add a program on Friday, April 21, officials said over the weekend.
Golden Gate Fields plans to run Friday through Sunday this weekend, track officials said on Tuesday.

Parx (PA):
  • Jamie Ness just wins and wins and wins. He was 6 3-1-2 yesterday. He has hit the board with 13 of his past 14 starters and won half those races. At Laurel and Parx combined, he has won with 13 of his past 29 runners dating to March 17.
  • Silvestre Gonzalez had a riding triple with four mounts. Two wins came for Kate DeMasi who won with both horses she sent out and is having a strong early 2023. One that caught my eye is named Moving In Stereo who is named, presumably, after a song by the Cars and is part of 1980s movie history.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. already the 2023 Jockey of the Year? He was 9 4-1-3 today. He has won 6 of his past 15 rides the past two days.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $60,000. The largest payout in North America today.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Kelsi Harr, Arkansas-native, rode three times and won twice with bombers. I have hit her a few times with such outlandish odds. One of the wins was for her fiancee Robert Cline who was himself mentored by the great Larry Jones.
  • Race 2: Point Blank (Kelsi Harr/Jinks Fires) won as the longest shot on the board at 67-to-1. The winner hit the board for the first time in 12 lifetime starts and paid $137.80.
1679623837396.png
  • Race 4: Reef's Destiny (Kelsi Harr/Robert Cline) won at 20-to-1. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $57,000.

The Jockey Club released its annual Fact Book today. As far as horses foaled in states and provinces and their records in 2022, I was surprised to see Tennessee produce five winners. I am not sure where the horse(s) won -- perhaps IL, KY, AR, WV? -- but I don't recall seeing any Tennesse foals.

The only states that did not foal a racehorse that ran in 2022: Alaska, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine, Nevada and perhaps surprisingly Delaware since that state has a major track.

New Hampshire had a winner with a lone starter, I seem to recall at a night track in Kentucky. Mississippi, Georgia and Wisconsin also had exactly one starter.

Utah produces a fair amount of QH but the state had three TB starters last year.

Of the 43,000+ starters 17,000+ came from Kentucky. Meanwhile, Florida, California, New York and Louisiana followed in the top five produced that hit a track.

Yukon had a starter. A western Canada track most likely.

Irad gets most of best horses but we also gives them the best rides.

He won on Kikilove by waiting and keeping Paco boxed into the stretch.
Then had the momentum entering the stretch and won.

In the last race he broke from post 7 in a 7/8 turf race.
Had the rail going into the first turn In fourth.
Moved up into second/third going up the backstretch.
Saving ground then tipped out and won easy.

Good horses and great rides.

And the two of them have a history. Remember the smackdown a couple or so years ago by the paddock?

Ortiz also can be as aggressive as any rider. Which isn't always an ideal trait but it usually works to his benefit. I am sure owners wouldn't want a questionable rider on the priciest horses either.

There was an inquiry on Paco earlier in the card.
Bulled his way out entering the stretch.
Wasn’t allowed though. Kept this number up.

Yes. I remember that fight between them.

Both can be aggressive and dangerous.

Paco almost killed Maragh a couple of years ago.
He caused a pile up that resulted in Junior Alvarado
getting hurt the next year.
Suspensions for both incidents.

The incident with the teenage Maragh seemed to infuriate a group of riders. I am pretty sure Junior Alvarado said in so many words that Paco Lopez wouldn't think twice about "dropping" someone. I assume he was on some sort of probation during that period because he didn't retaliate against Irad nor did he protect himself.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 3: From Hello (Dylan Davis/Rob Atras) was the lone first-time starter and paid $8 in victory. Atras is nearly 30% at the meet but doesn't have a strong showing with first-time-out runners.
  • Closing Day of the Meet: Sunday. Manny Franco and Dylan Davis will battle for top rider. Linda Rice will win top trainer with ease.
