  • Brad Cox: I had a feeling Brad Cox would come up with a big day but the ultimate prize failed in the Louisiana Derby. He ended 5-5-4 with his 19 starters. Five wins for any trainer is a potent day but I bet he was a little disappointed with Instant Coffee.
Meydan (Dubai, UAE):
  • Card: Nine races with purses over $30,000,000 U.S. including the $12 million Dubai World Cup which is the second largest purse in the world ($20 mil. Saudi Cup).
  • Winning Nations by Foals: Japan (3 wins), Ireland (3), USA (2) and France (1).
  • Race 5: Derma Sotogake won the $1,000,000 Group 2 UAE Derby and with it received 100 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby.

  • Race 9: Ushba Tesoro won the $12,000,000 Group I Dubai World Cup.

Nakayama Racecourse (Japan):
  • Mitono O won the Fukuryu in gate-to- wire fashion. The victory awarded connections 40 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. If the connections fail to meet a late payment fee on Monday, the invitation would go to the next in line in the Japan Road to the Derby. Four horses from Japan have made past Derbys.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • James Toner sent out three horses and each won under the guidance of Jorge Ruiz.
Turfway (Kentucky):
  • Card: Six of the 13 races were stakes with the highlight the Jeff Ruby Steaks, a Kentucky Derby prep.
  • Race 12: Two Phil's (Jareth Loveberry/Larry Rivelli) smashed the field with an impressive victory in the Grade 3 $700,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks. The colt won by 5+ lengths, the most lopsided result in this race since Balto Star won by 12 3/4 (dirt surface back then) in 2001. The son to Hard Spun broke his maiden at Colonial Downs (VA) and followed that with a win at Canterbury (MN). The smaller tracks get a jolt. Loveberry won a graded stakes for the fourth time in his career.

  • John Velazquez rode three winners in a rare trip to Turfway for the Hall of Fame rider.
  • Wesley Ward sent out four horses and three were victorious. Two were in MSW.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Card: 15 races in the penultimate day of the meet. Eight stakes including four graded of which the highlight was the Louisiana Derby.
  • Race 7: A 29-to-1 shot won by a neck over a 35-to-1 price in the $250,000 Rushaway Stakes The $2 exacta was over $1,300.
  • Race 9: West Will Power (Flavien Prat/Brad Cox) won the $500,000 Grade 2 New Orleans Classic.
  • Race 10: Spooky Channel (Joel Rosario/Jason Barkley) won the $300,000 Grade 2 Muniz Memorial Classic.
  • Race 11: Southlawn (Reylu Gutierrez/Norm Casse) won the $400,000 Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks. A big win for the young trainer. Next stop perhaps is the Kentucky Oaks.

  • Race 12: Kingsbarns (Flavien Prat/Todd Pletcher) won the $1,000,000 Grade 1 Louisiana Derby and received a significant 100 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The Uncle Mo colt, purchased for $800,000 as a 2-year-old, is a perfect 3-for-3. In the past eight years, horses such as Epicenter, Gun Runner and Hot Rod Charlie have won the race but the most recent winner of this race to get a win in the Ky. Derby was Grindstone in 1996.

  • Race 15: Staggering payoffs when a 65-to-1 and 49-to-1 won and placed, respectively. The $1 double was $670. The $1 exacta was in excess of $1,400. The $.50 Pick 3 returned over $2,200. The $.10 super paid over $8,000.
  • Florent Geroux rode three winners.
  • Leading Jockey: Reylu Gutierrez should win the title comfortably.
  • Leading Trainer: Ron Faucheux (39 wins), Brad Cox (39) and Bret Calhoun (37) are in an intense battle.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 8: Skyped (Calvin Borel/Renay Borel) gave the jockey his first win since November and stopped a skid of 37 straight winless rides.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 8: Dance to the Music (Juan Hernandez/Mark Glatt) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Desert Stormer Stakes in a field of four.

And not to be overlooked, Gulfstream drew post positions for the always attractive Florida Derby which will be held April 1. Here we go:

Fort Bragg defects from tomorrow's Sunland Derby.

Forte is considered the leading Kentucky Derby contender on many analysts lists entering the race.

  • 2 West Coast Cowboy 20-1 (Leon/Joseph)
  • 3 Shaq Diesel 30-1 (Vasquez/Richards)
  • 4 Mage 10-1 (Saez/Delgado)
  • 5 Mr. Peeks 30-1 (Gonzalez/Wilkes)
  • 6 Nautical Star 30-1 (Reyes/Quinonez)
  • 7 Il Miracolo 30-1 (Rios/Sano)
  • 8 Mr. Ripple 30-1 (Zayas/Joseph)

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 1: Ocasek (Dylan Davis/Chad Brown), a $440,000 purchase by Spendthrift Farms, placed in his maiden appearance. The Candy Ride colt had to be named for Ric Ocasek, no?!
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Brittany Russell: My admiration for Brittany Russell has been increased today as she went 3-for-3 and that includes a $21.80 winner. She is a superstar trainer at Laurel.

Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Card: Half of the 12 races were stakes.
  • Race 7: Munnys Gold (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) was sent off the prohibitive favorite and romped by more than 17 lengths to win the Sophomore Fillies Stakes. Bred in Florida by Nicksar Farms, Munnys Gold was purchased for $300,000 by Robert and Lawana Low. She set a track record for a 7 furlongs race in 1:20.09 -- the prior mark was 1:20.09 -- and she received a 106 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest for any 3-year-old so far in 2023. She is now 3-for-3 winning at three tracks and has obliterated the competition by a combined 38 lengths. She is set to race next in the Eight Belles on the Kentucky Oaks card.

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Closing Day: The meet ended with a 3-win day for leading trainer Ron Faucheux.
Sunland (New Mexico):
  • Card: Seven of the 11 races were either a stakes or handicap.
  • Race 10: Wild On Ice (Ken Tohill/Joel Marr) received 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby after winning the $600,000 Grade 3 Sunland Park Derby. The Texas-bred was a non-factor in two prior races at the track which followed two wins at Zia Park (NM). The 60-year-old jockey won a graded stakes for the first time. Per HorseRacingNation "Breeder-owner Frank Sumpter and trainer Joel Marr have to decide whether to pay $6,000 by the close of business Monday to make Wild On Ice eligible. "I don’t know,” Marr told Sunland Park TV after the race. “We weren’t thinking about it, even that, until a few minutes ago.” Wild On Ice paid $72.80, $34.80 and $6.40 and the odds were the second largest in the 18 years this race has been run.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 7: Fast and Shiny (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert) won the $100,000 Angels Flight Stakes. Baffert had no other runners in the race and was sent off the longest odds. How often does that happen in California?

It's here. One of the greatest dates and events on any sport's calendar. The almighty Florida Derby and in the discussion for the most important Kentucky Derby prep. Since 1990, this race has been won by Unbridled, Holy Bull, Thunder Gulch, Unbridled's Song, Monarchos, Empire Maker, Barbaro, Scat Daddy, Big Brown, Quality Road, Orb, Nyquist, Always Dreaming, Maximum Security among others.,

THE ARKANSAS DERBY

The Arkansas Derby represents one of the sport's biggest race days. To the winner goes 100 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The race has been won by American Pharoah, Curlin, Afleet Alex, Smarty Jones, Victory Gallop and so many more big names.,

The spunky Afleet Alex...and that powerful kick.

Forte drew the 11 post. He is the likely favorite for this year's Kentucky Derby as of this moment. Outside posts at Gulf are generally not advantageous but for a horse of this caliber the hindrance shouldn't be drastic. Plus, few are more in tune to Gulf than Irad Ortiz and Todd Pletcher.

From what I can gather, Dubyuhnell, the 12 in the Florida Derby, is pronounced "W and L" which I think is a reference to Washington and Lee University.

Interesting comment below.

“An outside draw didn’t scare me,” Gargan said. “Actually, we wanted to be on the outside, but I never dreamed it would wind up a 12 horse field and we’d be that far outside. I still don’t think all those horses will actually run. So many of them just don’t belong. I can’t believe those owners would be that stupid to run them in there.”

A full field of 12 at a mile and an eight at Gulfstream is like snow in July.
They hardly ever run races at a mile and an eight.
They never have a full field in the Fla. Derby.

Should be an interesting race and a whole lot of pissed off
owners and trainers after the race.

Saw Forte in the walking ring at Gulf on Wednesday.
Took 4 trips around the walking ring.
Looked magnificent. Bouncing on his toes.
