Here is a shocker. The Breeders' Cup continues its Kentucky-California rotation. Back to Del Mar. Hard to argue with the selection. Great location. But it seems unless Belmont (NY) gets involved following completion of renovations, the Breeders' Cup will select between Keeneland, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita and Del Mar.
It’s boring but it seems anyone else who has tried to host it lost way too much money. I don’t even know if Churchill is in it, they’ve hosted once in what will be 13 years.

You are correct. I checked an extension to that and CD has hosted three times since 2010. BC takes the reins from the host track that weekend and perhaps CD is reluctant to submit. Gulf would be an ideal option but Stronach doesn't seem to want it there (which is why The Stronach Group offered Laurel once) and the casino is an oft-cited obstacle. CA-KY will have hosted 17 straight years -- those four tracks, two in each state -- with the ugly weather of Monmouth (NJ) the most recent host outside those two states. Size, time of the year (some tracks are dark), geography, surfaces (or lack thereof), reluctance are among issues. If NYRA decides to pursue, the only negative about New York is weather.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had another wonderful afternoon going 8 5-0-0.
  • Rainbow Six: The jackpot is guaranteed to be $1.1 million.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Rafael Bejarano had a 3-win day. He won twice for Ron Moquett who entered the day with just five wins in 2023.

Maybe if Belinda sells Gulf to someone
interested in the horse racing business.
Than that entity. Buries the carousel club and builds
a grandstand. So Gulf can accommodate a crowd.
Then they will be a to host the Breeders Cup.

Wasn't that part of the family lawsuit with her dad on the opposing side? She was dating a real estate magnate and the father's fear was she would sell the property to a non-racing interest? Anyway, from what I recall, she still controls real estate and racing while he controls breeding. She seems to want to glamorize, for the lack of a better word, racing with pop stars and celebs especially on the big dates. If the Breeders' Cup controls that weekend, they likely won't permit such decorations.

  • Steve Asmussen entered 17 horses at four tracks and three returned as winners. He now has 10,006 lifetime wins.
King Abdulaziz Racetrack (Saudi Arabia):
  • Handle: Now confirmed that $25.2 million was bet on the card and more than $6 million on the feature race.
  • Japan's Day: Four winners, repeat from 2022.
  • Race 8: Panthalassa (Yoshida Yutaka/Yahagi Yoshito) was the upset winner at 16-to-1 in the $20,000,000 Saudi Cup, the world's largest purse.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $16.5 million.
  • Javier Castellano and Jose Ortiz both scored hat tricks.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: An exceptional day of racing with the track handling over $21 million.
  • Conditions: Sloppy.
  • Race 10: Wet Paint (Flavien Prat/Brad Cox) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Honeybee Stakes as the favorite in a field of 12. She received 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Oaks.

  • Race 11: Confidence Game (James Graham/Keith Desormeaux) earned 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby following an upset win at 18-to-1 in the $1,000,000 Grade 2 Rebel Stakes. Confidence Game broke his maiden at Churchill. He was purchased as a yearling for $25,000. An interview with the "other" Desormeaux who looks and sounds like his brother Kent.

  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had a rough day going seven mounts without a win in a rare visit to Oaklawn.

One of the biggest Kentucky Derby prep days is on the horizon Saturday will have four Derby preps with three of the winners receiving 50 points towards entry into the Run for the Roses. The sport's four most invested states will be front-and-center.

And Gulfstream has a phenomenal card.

SANTA ANITA PARK
1677527995909.png

Santa Anita's card has been revealed. The San Felipe is a Kentucky Derby prep. Tim Yakteen has five of the 11 runners. He has taken much of Bob Baffert's supply with the latter trainer under suspension from Churchill Downs and as such the important Derby preps are worthless to owners if Baffert trained.

Awaiting Derby prep cards from New York and Turfway.

The San Felipe field in post-position order with jockey, weight:
  1. Chase the Chaos—Amando Ayuso—122
  2. National Treasure—John Velazquez—120
  3. Practical Move—Ramon Vazquez—124
  4. Bluegrass Go Go—Edwin Maldonado—120

Brad Cox debuts a $1 million colt at Fair Grounds on Saturday in Race 7. Rule Breaker is a son to Into Mischief.

A wildly impressive card on Saturday at Gulf. Illustrated makes his debut but in the outside post in Race 4. Tough spot at Gulf. The $1.1 million son to Justify is next to stablemate Summonyourcourage. It is good to be Todd Pletcher these days.

Byron King's Derby Dozen is below. Posted in order to familiarize others as the Derby preps escalate in importance.

As of today, I am going all in with Brad Cox's stable.

As an aside, Tim Yakteen has taken many of Bob Baffert's horses since the latter is prohibited from entering any of the Churchill Downs' properties through the Kentucky Derby.

  • Rainbow Six: Tomorrow's card starts with a $1.1 million carryover. The guarantee pool is now at $1.5 million. The mandatory payout on Sunday could reach $6 million.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 8: Louis Cella owns Oaklawn and by all accounts, his family, which has been heavily invested in the track for decades and generations, has done a solid job in promoting the sport and producing exceptional racing. But this "inquiry" caught my eyes since he owns the winning horse.

  • Saffie Joseph, Jr., a hit in south Florida, was suspended by the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission 15 days for a race in September which involved a positive test (nerve pain medication). The suspension runs June 5 through June 19, 2023 but an appeal is underway.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Jaime Torres, a bug rider, won his first three rides of the day.
  • James Bond began the day 0-for-21 in 2023 but the trainer won twice.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three more winners.
  • Pick 6 (per track website): A mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 jackpot carryover pool is scheduled for Sunday's program. Should the Rainbow 6 pool go unsolved through Saturday's card, the gross jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $6 million.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 4: Crimson (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) was the lone first-time starter and won at 3-to-1. But those holding tickets had to endure an excruciating painful wait time when an inquiry/objection was eventually nullified.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 3: Scratchemejamin (Henry Lopez/Paul Jones) gave the trainer his first T-bred win since 2018. He had sent out just six horses in that time. He trains mostly Quarters.
  • Mario Gutierrez rode three winners.
  • Pick 6:
