Three Kentucky Derby preps on Saturday. One is on synthetic at Golden Gate. The Withers is rescheduled from last weekend's postponed card. The Sam will likely see star riders including Luis Saez and Jose Ortiz. The card will be released Wednesday.

Tampa Bay may have the most appealing star in Wonder Wheel who will run on the same card (not published yet) though not the Derby prep. Wonder Wheel was voted best 2-year-old filly in North America for 2022.

  • Steve Asmussen's only day entry today was scratched. He remains eight wins shy of 10,000.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Race 7: She's Lookin Lucky (DeShawn Parker/Matt Shirer) broke her maiden by more than 13 lengths.

The Saudi Cup weekend is February 24-25 with the world's largest purse the conclusion of the 2-day event. At $20,000,000, the Saudi Cup will be held on Saturday the 25th with a post around 12:45 pm ET though TV info and full cards have not been confirmed.

Bob Baffert could enter both Taiba and Country Grammer. Horses are expected from the UK, USA, Japan and elsewhere.

Entries for both days will be unveiled later. There were over 1,400 horses pre-entered for the two days.

  • Steve Asmussen is five wins shy of 10,000 victories -- most in North America history and recognized as the second most in the sport's history. He sent out 12 horses today at three tracks and had a trio of winners.
1676076815267.png
Meadowlands (New Jersey):
  • Numbers: The handles for nighttime weekend racing have been extraordinary for the harness facility.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Luis Saez had a natural hat trick amid a 4-win day.
  • Race 8: Cruzin Man (Javier Castellano/Mario Lorito) was a 30-to-1 morning line bet down to 6-to-1 and he wired the field in his second lifetime start. The small-stable native Floridian trainer has 20 lifetime wins.
Fonner Park (Nebraska):
  • Export Signal: Fonner has joined Texas (Lone Star and Sam Houston specifically) in denying the export of signals due to HISA's involvement in federal uniform guidelines pertaining to medications among other safety issues. The meet began today and runs through May 6. Fonner made national news as one of the few sporting venues to operate during the early stages of the C-virus. Due to HISA rules, if a track does not export a signal, then HISA cannot dictate recent legislation which has been mostly accepted but can be unpopular elsewhere. Basically, it is federal vs. state rights. There is ongoing litigation involving a variety of parties. Interesting times in which we live.
Sam Houston (Texas):
  • Stewart Elliott-Steve Asmussen teamed twice for victories.

Meadowlands (New Jersey):
  • Simulcast: One of the best in the nation in terms of colors (blue, yellow and white) and fonts. Easy to read. Others tracks -- especially some majors in Kentucky -- could use a refreshening.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 1: Monroe (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher), a $320,000 purchase, won by more than six lengths in an expected win but still impressive debut.
  • Race 6: Toxic Gray (Eric Cancel/Michael Miceli) won by a head over Everso Mischievous (Manny Franco/Brad Cox) in a thriller in which the runner-up debuted to pre-race Kentucky Derby possibilities attached to him.

  • Race 7: Sundaeswithsandy (Jaime Torres/Rudy Rodriguez) won by more than 13 lengths.
  • Race 9: Hit Show (Manny Franco/Brad Cox) was sent off the favorite and smashed the field to win the Grade 3 $250,000 Withers Stakes by more than five lengths. Connections secured 20 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby.

  • Race 10: Camm' Duke (Abner Adorno/James Ryerson) won by more than 11 lengths. The $1.00 Pick 6 paid over $50,000.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Race 10: Litigate (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) won the $250,000 Grade 3 Sam F. Davis and with it 20 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby.

  • Race 9: Dreaming of Snow (Samy Camacho/Gerald Bennett) shocked the field to win the $150,000 Suncoast Stakes at 38-to-1. She has alternated wins and losses in five career starts. Defeated by a neck was Wonder Wheel (Tyler Gaffalione/Casse) who won an Eclipse Award for her 2022 exploits as a 2-year-old and is considered by many the best female horse in the land. Bennett is arguably the top local trainer at Tampa in recent years. A $60,000 Florida-bred purchase beat a $275,000 Into Mischief filly who is now 6 4-2-0. Well, now!

  • Race 10: Handle: Roughly $11 million.
  • Samy Camacho had a 3-win day.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $15 million.
  • Race 11: Yes I Am Free (Miguel Vasquez/Laura Cazares) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint. The 7-year-old won this race last year. The trainer has just 62 wins in eight years of training -- this is her most successful horse.

1676175360986.png
  • Javier Castellano had a 4-win day. The Hall of Famer finished 11 4-2-2.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. finished a suspension. He enters tomorrow with wins on 10 of his past 19 mounts.
  • Emisael Jaramillo has not win since January 19, a streak of 35 straight races without a victory. Even this time of year with outstanding riders throughout the colony, that is a number not representative of his skill.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 9: Klassy Bridgette (Francisco Arrieta/Chris Hartman) won the $150,000 Dixie Belle Stakes by a neck. Hartman is having an exceptional 2023 winning at a 31% clip and in-the-money a stunning 70%.

Golden Gate (California):
  • Race 8: Chase the Chaos (Armando Ayuso/Ed Moger, Jr.) won the El Camino Real Derby and with it secured 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby.

Do people still "blame" Blame for beating Zenyatta? Let it go. He won. She lost. Garrett Gomez deserved better. Blame has 20 graded stakes winners to his belt, too. Damn fine horse.

  • Steve Asmussen is now within three wins of 10,000 following a victory at Sam Houston.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Card: Bombs throughout the day. Favorites bit the dust seven out of nine races.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $31,000.
  • Race 8: Late Night Larry (Manny Franco/Brittany Russell) gave the trainer a 2-for-3 record at the meet. Not too bad for the Maryland-based star.

  • Race 7: The $1 Pick 3 paid over $3,200.
  • Race 6: The $1 Pick 3 paid over $7,500. The $.50 Pick 4 returned more than $36,000.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 4 returned a gigantic $97,000. The $1 Pick 3 paid an enormous $24,000.
  • Race 4: Won by a $54.50 winner, the $1 Pick 3 returned more than $3,500.
  • Race 3: Funny How (Katie Davis/Ray Handal) was sent off 5-to-1 to win the $100,000 Broadway in a field of horses that like the Big A based on winning percentages. Funny How is now a perfect 5 5-0-0 at Aqueduct in seven career starts and rides a 5-race win streak into her next start.

  • Jose Lezcano and Linda Rice teamed seven times. They won three of those races.
  • Jose Gomez, Eclipse Award winning Apprentice of the Year for 2022, lost his bug and finished 0-for-5 in his first day as a journeyman.
  • Carryover: The first Pick 5 will have a carryover of $285,000 heading into Friday's card. NYRA is dark until then. Long weekend approaching.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 7: John Hall (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) placed in a third lifetime start. The 3-year-old son to Violence was out for the first time since New Year's Eve. I had much hope entering his debut win in November. Keep anopther watchful eye out.

  • Race 5: Uncommon Valor (Jean Briceno/Jose Corrales) had just two wins in 32 lifetime starts by nosed out a win here. Good finish.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. returned from suspension and took no time to find the winner's circle as he won the first two races. He ended 8 3-0-2 and oddly enough was 0-for-4 on board Todd Pletcher mounts. Ortiz has won 13 of his past 27 rides.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 1: Bertie's Cause (Walter De La Cruz/William Martin), out for the first time, gave the trainer his first win at the meet in 45 starts.

Steve Asmussen's milestone 10,000th career win is likely to come this week. As of now, he has the following scheduled:
  • Wednesday: Turfway (2); Delta Downs (1).
  • Thursday: Turfway (1).
  • Friday: Oaklawn (7); Fair Grounds (3); Sam Houston (2); Turfway (1).

The Risen Star awards 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby which is the biggest total to date. Louisiana will be in the national spotlight Saturday. No Baffert horses as Fair Grounds is owned by Churchill Downs. It will be an opportunity for others to see what they have.

Brad Cox starters 8 and 13 top the intrigue.

Forte and Hoosier Philly (f) have the lowest current Kentucky Derby odds other than those not named under "field/others." Remember, as currently stipulated, Bob Baffert-trained horses either have to be shipped to other barns or they will not be allowed to partake in the 2023 Derby since Churchill Downs has suspended him.

John Veitch passed away today at the age of 77. The Hall of Fame trainer will always be attached to Alydar as part of arguably the greatest rivalry in the sport's history and certainly the best generational battle.

While Affirmed dominated the series 7-3 and made Stevie Cauthen a household name, Alydar finished with 14 wins in 26 starts, He was 20 12-7-0 through his 3-year-old season with his only non-first or second place appearance coming in his debut outing.

In Alydar's 26 races, 18 times he went off even-money or less. Only once - in his second start - did he go off more than 2-1 and that was less than 5-2.

He also proved successful in the shed producing Kentucky Derby winners Alysheba and Strike the Gold and also the great Easy Goer.

The last two meetings:

The 1978 Belmont

The famous -- or infamous -- 1978 Travers and the DQ.

  • Suspended: Linda Rice, the current leading trainer at Aqueduct, received a 10-day suspension for a bute over-usage last month. Her nephew Adam Rice will oversee the stable. The suspension runs Monday through February 28.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione had a hat trick with two of his victories on board Chad Brown runners.
  • Race 9: Turf King (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown) won by a neck in a debut victory. Bred in Ireland and sold for $180,000 in Florida last year, the colt won on Tapeta not turf but for a trainer who specializes in turf. There's something in a name.
