Aqueduct (New York):
  • Linda Rice sent out four horses and three returned as winners. She is having an exceptional meet with 14 wins, twice as many as her closest challenger. That person is Chad Brown who hasn't sent out too many horses as yet and is a potent 7-for-14 (50%).
  • Race 5: Asset Purchase (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) debuted to a win and paid $8.80 which may have been the steal of the day considering the connections. The horse was purchased for just $75,000 which is low especially for owners Klaravich Stables.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Feargal Lynch and Sheldon Russell have not ridden since December and I don't recall either getting injured. Russell has been in the winner's circle during some of his wife's victories.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $17.3 million. Gulf handled approximately $63,000,000 in two days.
  • Race 11: More than $6.2 million was added to the existing Pick 6 Jackpot which brought the total to in excess of $7 million. Each winner collected more than $6,000. Going into the race, 5,049 tickets were alive.
  • Race 6: Stat (Edgard Zayas/Saffie Joseph, Jr.) began the Rainbow 6 sequence with a 22-to-1 shot winner. Not often that trainer is available at 22-to-1, at least in south Florida.
  • Race 2: Bandita (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) unleashed a furious debut to win as the even money favorite and by more than 8 lengths. She is a daughter to Gun Runner.

  • Leonel Reyes began the day riding a natural hat trick at odds of 11-1, 8-1 and 2-1, respectively. He has blossomed in the past year or so.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won twice, his fifth straight day with multiple wins.
  • Elizabeth Dobles is 12 4-1-0 in 2023.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Rafael Bejarano won three times.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 2: Havnameltdown (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $200,000 Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes. Baffert finished 1-2-3 but in a reduced field of four. Baffert emphasized the winner is a sprinter while the other two runners are in for distances.

@Marco 85

Did you see the result of FG8 on Friday? $157 winner. The $1 double paid $61.50. Chalk preceded the bomber but how often does a double pay less than a win?!
Wow. That is crazy. I haven’t seen that in thoroughbreds.

Back in the day. 70’s and 80’s. It would happen at the trotters.
Yonkers and Roosevelt.
Benny “the whip” Webster and his crew.
Winner would pay 26 dollars and the exacta would pay 21.
What an inside game it was back then.

Stronach is making plans to expand Pegasus to Santa Anita in 2024. The success of the day this past weekend is seen as a potential coast-to-coast multi-day event next year and the future. Stronach owns both Gulfstream (FL) and Santa Anita (CA). This weekend will be a $120 admission event for those willing to partake in music, dancing, cigars and Miami cuisine at Santa Anita.

A mandatory payout for the Pick 6 will be held Sunday. That bet exceeded $7 million yesterday at Gulf.

Rumors that Stronach tried to buy into Arizona seem to be true but without success.

The Wheat Province
Turf course at Gulf is playing to speed.
1st and 6th races go wire to wire.
8th race was won by a Clement firster beating a Brown horse
from off the pace. Great effort. Big future.

Took Gentle Soul out of my stable after a poor race last time.
Came back today in his next start and won and paid $21 bucks.

Tough game.
Thanks for the heads up. I cashed win tickets on the two Pegasus turf races.

I need to know the last time one trainer had every entry in any kind of race (much less a stakes race) that wasn't some sort of exhibition.

What do you think he does? Just assign an assistant to each horse, set them off on their own, and see what happens?

The 1980 Woodward when Spectacular Bid won in a walkover? That is part joke but technically only one trainer was in that race. I don't recall a trainer having all four of any race.

Chad Brown had four of six in the 2019 Diana (something that is probably matched by the memories of others).

Yesterday, Baffert had four of five entered in the San Vicente (one of his horses was scratched) and ultimately three of four who ran.

It is important to remember that when connections nominate horses for such races and then eventually opt for something else. In this case only Peter Miller (Thirsty John) and John Shirreffs (Eastbound) had one each and probably felt more comfortable going elsewhere. Baffert has won this race 10 times.

But perhaps most intriguing is that Baffert is currently under suspension from Kentucky Derby tracks (Churchill. Fair Grounds to name two) and when he enters horses in preps elsewhere, those runners cannot earn Kentucky Derby points. He has appealed his suspension and though it is tough to gauge what will happen with that latest court battle, owners could have put these horses under someone else's name but chose not. Perhaps because the points to the winner is still minimal at 20.

The battle between Texas and HISA took an interesting twist today. With the feds losing another court battle, Texas's decision to remove the exporting of simulcast that was self-imposed last year, has been updated to re-instate the signal beginning this weekend. While it seemed Texas was confident in its decision despite the fact that it would hurt handle and anyone outside the state who had an interest in the sport -- especially handicappers -- the reasons were known as HISA imposed severe guidelines in regard to various issues such as uniformed medications to which most other states abided.

At least temporarily, even if Texas isn't a major player in the sport of kings, the decision today to permit U.S. residents the opportunity to once again watch racing from there is a better option than nothing at all. There is also a possibility that Steve Asmussen could launch his monumental 10,000th victory from the track and that should be seen by as many as possible.

Sam Houston Race Park, without out-of-state simulcast export of its signal since its Thoroughbred meet began Jan. 6 amid opposition of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority by the Texas Racing Commission and other Texas entities, will resume domestic simulcasting Feb. 3.

The move comes after a Jan. 31 ruling by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals that denied a request by HISA and the Federal Trade Commission to put the brakes on the appellate court's ruling that HISA is facially unconstitutional. Tuesday's decision also means that a preliminary injunction against enforcement of HISA rules issued by a federal district court in Louisiana, an injunction that had been partially stayed by the Fifth Circuit until it held HISA unconstitutional in November, remains in effect.

"Now I'm grateful to have some legal backing to say it doesn't apply in Texas now, and we can allow our horsemen and tracks to export the signal," TRC executive director Amy Cook said.

Dwight Berube, vice president and general manager at Sam Houston, expressed relief at the resumption of simulcasting, noting that betting on Sam Houston is down "probably 90% since last year, but that was understandable and exactly what we anticipated when we lost the export signal."

A different article with more quotes. Very interesting.

Texas Thoroughbred racetracks may resume exporting their simulcast signals this week, based on a decision by the Texas Racing Commission stating that simulcast requests “will only be considered in a manner consistent with Texas law. All horseraces in Texas will continue to be conducted in accordance with the Texas Racing Act and the Texas Rules of Racing.”
In a letter dated Feb. 1 to all occupational and business licensees of the Texas Racing Commission, commission executive director Amy Cook wrote that the federal law creating the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority “has no effect on the state of Texas.” That position was taken after an order on Jan. 31 from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals that it would not vacate its November opinion finding the law “facially unconstitutional.”
HISA and the Federal Trade Commission had asked the Fifth Circuit to reconsider that November opinion in light of an amendment passed by Congress in late December intended to address the constitutional questions affirmed by the appellate court in a lawsuit filed by the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association and numerous affiliates. The Fifth Circuit reversed a decision by a district court that upheld the law's constitutionality.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Jeremy Laprida and Kemich DeJesus both rode three winners. DeJesus was a perfect 3-for-3. He entered the day 1-for-32 in 2023.
Thursday, February 2, 2023

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 7: Treasure Trove (Jevian Toledo) and Southern District (J.D. Acosta) formed an entry that finished 1-2 for trainer Norman Cash. Both horses entered from races at Laurel with Maryland-based jockeys on board today. Cash's Beverley Park won 15 times in 2022, more than any other horse in North America. A good showing for Laurel and Maryland racing.
  • Race 2: Stjames (Mike Luzzi/Leah Gyarmati) was never close to victory but after a bad break and seemingly destined for the bottom spot, the veteran rider, with his lone mount of the day, used every bit of energy to place at 20-to-1.
  • Race 1: Reserve Currency (Dylan Davis/Chad Brown) won the opener by nearly 10 lengths.

  • History Lesson: The opener was a mile on dirt. For historical purposes, Easy Goer still holds the track record in 1:32.40 in 1989. One of New York's all-time greatest athletes with a robust career mark of 20 14-5-1 and with over $4 million earned when it wasn't easy to put up that figure. Easy Goer has a resume in the state that has yet to be matched.

  • Dylan Davis got on board four mounts and won three times.
  • Canceled: NYRA announced the cancellations for the cards on Friday and Saturday, The Withers will be re-drawn Wednesday for a new card February 11. Excessive winds with extreme cold is forecasted.

Well hot damn. A very nice piece on Junior Alvarado. Long a personal favorite rider, as I mentioned a few days ago this may be the best month of his career:

He broke through with his first Breeders' Cup victory last autumn when Cody's Wish staged a dramatic last-to-first rally to win the Grade 1 Dirt Mile. He registered his 2,000th victory on Jan. 21 when Broadway Force broke his maiden for trainer Jimmy Jerkens at Gulfstream Park. He recorded another huge triumph one week later at Gulfstream, when he executed the game plan to perfection to win the $3 million, G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational aboard Art Collector.
“That's what makes everything worth it now,” said Alvarado, 36, who was honored as Jockey of the Week.
Success has not come easily. Injuries have occurred with alarming regularity, forcing him to rebuild his business each time. He has required four shoulder surgeries. An ankle injury needed seven months to heal. He broke his collarbone three times. He broke his back twice.
“He's just had so many hurdles in his career with injuries. He gets taken off a lot of horses,” said Kelly, his wife. “He's at an all-time high right now. It's just falling into place for him. We're very grateful, thankful and excited.”
While his riding ability has always been respected, the native of Venezuela has struggled to gain opportunities given steadily to the nation's premier riders. He rides regularly for Hall of Famer Bill Mott but only occasionally for many other leading trainers. In his quest for a Triple Crown win, he took fourth with Mohaymen in the 2016 Kentucky Derby (G1) and fourth with Zetterholm in the 2012 Preakness (G1).

Texas had rescinded the decision to simulcast due to "legal complexities.". Therefore, the update from earlier this week that simulcasting to all other US states would be restored has now been changed to status quo.

Lone Star Park resumes simulcasting as of today, from what their site said, not sure if that includes Sam Houston as well

Lone Star doesn't race this time of year. That note is probably for betting other tracks at Lone Star's home facility.

Texas has restricted exporting signals from live racing to other US states based on the dispute with HISA.

Make that seven wins through 8 races. He just tied a track record. One more race to go.

Seven wins in a row. One of the most remarkable results I have witnessed. I am not sure if that is a track record.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Linda Albert is a career 14% trainer who has been conditioning for 35 years and her small stable has been electric so far in 2023. She is 5-for-12 after a 2-win day today.
  • Race 6: And in a repeat of the 1969 World Series, the Mets beat the Orioles. Well. sort of. Tom Terrific (Denis Araujo/Linda Albert) snapped a 27-race losing streak to beat among other entered Brooks Robinson who finished last. Tom Terrific is 5-for-50 lifetime and last won in June 2021. Amazin'.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 4: Lakota Territory (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) debuted to victory. Anytime Pletcher touches a first-timer and the horse wins, it deserves extra attention as to progress.
  • Todd Pletcher was 2-for-2 today with Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding both horses.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. became the first rider in the 84-year history of Gulfstream Park to win seven consecutive races in one day. The defending Jockey of the Year in North America finished 9 7-0-0 and joined Luis Saez, Jerry Bailey and Tyler Gaffalione as riders to win seven on one card at the oval. Truly one of the most brilliant individual achievements I have witnessed. More later but this quote is typical of the confidence in which Irad Ortiz, Jr. possesses....and rides:
“It's my first time winning seven races in one day,” Ortiz said. “So, I feel great.”

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Todd Pletcher's barn is sizzling. The defending Trainer of the Year in North America is 14 7-3-3 the past two days in Florida (TB and Gulfstream). Today, he had four winners at Gulf in five races entered.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners. He is 19 10-2-0 the past two days.
  • Race 12: Rocket Can (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $250,000 Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes. With it the connections received 20 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. Alvarado has had a brilliant past four months.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Bob Baffert won two of three races in which he entered and finished second with a 15-to-1 shot.
  • Race 3: Newgate (Frankie Dettori/Bob Baffert) won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes but since the trainer is under suspension by Churchill Downs, no points were awarded to entry into the Kentucky Derby despite this being a Prep.
