Its real I think. Notably, both PLD and Laine (same draft) are players whose performance may depend upon (relative) readiness, preparation of attitude, approach, and other factors that stray into the realm of intangibles.Overly dramatic to say perhaps, but wow is Laine ever Mr. Pathos of the NHL.
Psychologically prepped vs physiologically prepped - most players require both, some like Laine may need more of the former - and then there are those freaks who simply perform. In this case I recall Paul Maurice mentioning that Buff was a player with it all - he could step into his equipment with almost no training and just kill it.
I was (once, maaaaany moons ago) a swimmer, and trained with a guy that I would call a freak. Even when he was totally hung over for morning practice, he could slay at distance or sprint sets.
