The LeComte is setting up to be a "test" for Echo Again who drew the rail.

Larry Best of OXO is not shy about dropping capital on his horses. He is searching for a stud and oftentimes overspends; however, in this race he sends out two under the hands of Paolo Lobo who does well with his native Brazlian-breds and will likely have one in the Pegasus later this month at Gulfstream. In the LeComte, Lobo will train $450,000 Bromley who is 2-for-2 and will ride under the wily hands of Javier Castellano and also $1.4 million Iztos who is 1-for-2 and will be piloted by the skillful Brian Hernandez. Jr.

Brad Cox sends out a pair and as always his horses factor.

Two Phils is another intriguing candidate.

The eyes of the racing world will be on New Orleans.

Sorry. I haven’t followed Fair Grounds at all this year.
The inner 34 feet on the turf course is still looking bad.
They have been only running 1 race on the turf per day
from what I have seen. With small fields. So I haven’t bother
to follow the meet.

Santa Anita's Saturday card concludes with 13 entered on turf in a $67,000 MSW. That may be appealing to you.

Yeah, it is tough to focus on every track with a keen eye. I glance at FG but nothing that has maintained my presence until this weekend. I see there are a few $65,000 MSW with deep fields. That will be a primary interest. A massive card.

• Steve Asmussen has wins at Sam Houston (TX) and Oaklawn (AR) today. He is 24 wins away from 10,000 victories.

Aqueduct (New York):

• Race 6: Simple Sugar (Jalon Samuel/Gina Giglio) got her nose up in time and gave the trainer her first win since 2016 with her 61st lifetime start. She was absent from training until sending out a four last year. Her brief history is in the mid-Atlantic.

Laurel (Maryland):

• Race 7: A 1-to-9 shot ran off the board in a field of five.
• Jeiron Barbosa finished 7 2-2-2. He is 24% in his second year of riding in the US. He leads the meet with 14 wins. Whether he wins the Eclipse Award for best bug will be revealed in just a few days. He has my vote.
• Brittany Russell (won two of the three races she entered), Anthony Farrior and Damon Dilodovico are among those with hot barns,

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Pegasus World Cup Draw: 12:00 pm on Sunday with NBC having a broadcast window from 4:30 pm ET-6:00 pm ET. The $3,000,000 race is Saturday. While the details are not yet finalized, I assume a pre-noon start to the race day. Laurel Park (MD) announced today a 12:00 pm ET start that day.
• Race 7: A dead-heat for win.
• Tyler Gaffalione rode a winner for the 2,000th time and did so on his home turf. Congrats to one of North America's best. He was named Apprentice of the Year in North America in 2015 and has won numerous meet titles (mostly in Kentucky) since then. He didn't slow down with this one win, number 2,001 came later on the card.

• Luis Saez had a 3-win day.
• Jockey Battle: Is it too early to state the Master of Obvious? Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Luis Saez are battling out for meet leader, already. The meet goes into Florida Derby weekend in early April.
• Junior Alvarado has 1,999 career wins.

• Brad Cox won four times including two stakes at Fair Grounds. He also won at Turfway (KY) and Aqueduct (NY).
• Daniel Quintero, a 19-year-old exercise rider, died in an early morning accident at the track in which no equine or other human was injured. From what I saw, many tracks held a moment of silence as riders formed a bond from Santa Anita to Laurel and points in between.

Laurel (Maryland):

• Card; Six of the nine races were stakes.
• Double the Fun: Angel Cruz and Jevian Toledo rode two stakes winners. Brittany Russell and Norman "Lynn" Cash both trained two stakes winners.

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Race 5: Broadway Force (Junior Alvarado/Jimmy Jerkens) delivered the jockey his 2,000th lifetime victory. The Ontario-bred daughter to Violence was out for the second time. Alvarado won his 2,000th race a day following Tyler Gaffalione did the same and also at Gulfstream. The photo appears to include the Ortiz brothers. I don't recall too many celebratory photos that include other riders.

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):

• Card: 14 races of which six were stakes including two graded.
• Race 12: The Alys Look (Luis Saez/Brad Cox) won the $150,000 Silverbulletday Stakes. Cox finished 1-2 in the race but his pre-race favorite Chop Chop (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) placed as the pair separated themselves from the pack. He seemed very subdued in a post-race interview.

• Race 13: Happy American (James Graham/Neil Pessin) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Louisiana Stakes. Pessin has been active for close to 40 years but earned a rare graded stakes win today.

​

• Race 14: Instant Coffee (Luis Saez/Brad Cox) was sent off the favorite and won the Grade 3 $200,000 Lecomte Stakes. The race is part of the Kentucky Derby prep series. The $200,000 son to Bolt D'Oro is 3-for-4 lifetime with wins at Saratoga and Churchill.

Golden Gate (California):

• Race 9: The longest shot on the board won the finale and paid $74.00. The first-time starter (there was one other) was sent off at 36-to-1.

Santa Anita (California):

• Kazushi Kimura rode two horses and both won. He was having a tough start to his journey from Woodbine (ON) to southern Cal but today was a success.

As trainer Bob Baffert’s suspension from the New York Racing Association is set to expire this week, new details have emerged about what has to happen for horses currently trained by him to be eligible to compete in this year’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

As trainer Bob Baffert’s suspension from the New York Racing Association is set to expire this week, new details have emerged about what has to happen for horses currently trained by him to be eligible to compete in this year’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.​

As Baffert is still suspended by Churchill Downs through this year’s Derby on May 6, owners who have potential Derby horses with him must transfer them to other trainers by Feb. 28 in order to be eligible to earn qualifying points in those points-scoring races designated by Churchill Downs on the Road to the Derby.​

​

On the nomination form for this year’s Triple Crown – the first deadline for which is Jan. 29 – it states “horses under the care of any suspended trainer or affiliates may be transferred to a non-suspended trainer and become eligible for earning points on a forward-looking basis so long as the transfer is complete by February 28, 2023.”​

​

“Right now, we’re not commenting on anything,” Baffert said Sunday. “We have a Feb. 2 hearing, we’re waiting until that date. Until then, there’s nothing to talk about.”​

• Texas -- It sure would be nice for us to enjoy Texas racing once again. At last check, Steve Asmussen is 23 wins shy of 10,000 victories -- the most for any trainer in No. America history. It would be shameful if he reaches that feat at a track such as Sam Houston (TX) while the battle between HISA (the feds) and the state is ongoing. I support Texas's decision but at the same time it is restricting viewership. Supposedly, though handle is down drastically, it isn't affecting the industry inside the state. Time will tell, if true, if there is a limit to that theory. But without a signal in the US except for the home state, the rest of us are being penalized.

Aqueduct (New York):

• Madison Olver, a 10-pound bug who entered today 2-for-64 lifetime and 0-for-26 this year, won twice. Olver is from Colorado, a rarity among today's North America riders.
• Dylan Davis was the star of the day going 8 3-2-1 including a pair of wins for Chad Brown whose only two entries not only returned victorious but were formerly ridden by Manny Franco who concluded a 3-day suspension this weekend. Franco-Brown has turned into a deadly combination.
• Chad Brown is 11 6-2-0 (55%/73%) this meet.
• Jorge Abreu, a long-time assistant to Chad Brown, is 6 4-0-1 (67%/84%) this meet.
• Race 2: Though neither factored, there were horses in the race named Marvin and Hagler.

Laurel (Maryland):

• Race 5: A 3-to-5 shot is expected to win. A 70-to-1 shot is not expected to place. For anyone who wheeled or went 4-all in exactas, run to the window because that $142.00 payout was exceptional.

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Edgard Zayas has won four of his last seven rides after a 6 3-0-2 day.

Santa Anita (California):

• Peter Miller sent out two horses at the track and a third at Oaklawn (AR). All three won. He entered today 3-for-25 in 2023. He is now 6-for-28. What a difference a day makes.

Marty McGee's column mentioned some layups and other categories that are see-sawing. I would like to see Todd Pletcher win Trainer of the Year. I think he gets overlooked sometimes and perhaps too-often criticized in certain settings.

But the column didn't mention Apprentice. Most articles I read seem to favor Gomez. I am holding out hope that Barbosa receives the award. It is unrelated to 2022, but the kid is tearing up the charts this year, too.

Eclipse Awards: Flightline set to collect Horse of Year title; suspense in some categories

A gathering of racing's glitterati and television viewers are widely expected to witness Flightline and his connections being honored with the 2022 Horse of the Year award when the annual Eclipse Awards dinner is held Thursday evening at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla.

A lack of suspense not only can be expected in the categories involving Flightline, but quite a few others, too. Forte and Wonder Wheel, as winners of their respective Breeders’ Cup events, are virtually certain to earn the Eclipse as top 2-year-old male and 2-year-old filly, respectively. Same goes for Nest (3-year-old filly), Malathaat (older dirt female), Goodnight Olive (female sprinter), and Modern Games (male turf horse). Among human participants, Irad Ortiz Jr., who set a record in 2022 with $37 million in mount earnings, seems a sure bet to be named outstanding jockey for the fourth time in five years.​

Other categories, however, aren’t as simple. There has been considerable debate as to whether Epicenter or Taiba will win the Eclipse for 3-year-old male, and the Eclipse for outstanding trainer is viewed as a tight race between Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown.​

Jockey Joree Scriver, who suffered lower-limb paralysis in a one-horse accident on Jan. 1 at Sunland Park in New Mexico, was transferred from a hospital in El Paso, Texas, to the Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., a premier rehabilitation center for paralysis patients, her sister said Sunday.

Jockey Joree Scriver, who suffered lower-limb paralysis in a one-horse accident on Jan. 1 at Sunland Park in New Mexico, was transferred from a hospital in El Paso, Texas, to the Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., a premier rehabilitation center for paralysis patients, her sister said Sunday.​

Scriver, 21, is scheduled to remain at Craig for 60 days, according to her sister, Nicole West.​

​

“She hasn’t had any feeling or motion in her legs,” West said. “She remains paralyzed right now.”​

​

West said doctors have advised Scriver that she has “zero percent” of recovering feeling in her legs.​

​

“It’s not impossible. Miracles happen,” West said.​

I am estimating $40,000,000 will be bet on Saturday's card. If the Rainbow Six goes unsolved entering Sunday, the figure for that bet could be astronomical. I don't like the bet but cards and events such as Saturday's Pegasus and while on NBC, there will be the infrequent bettor adding to the day.
