Laurel went through issues a few days ago.
Roughly same part of the country. Wonder if it’s the same issue, the track not taking to the weather.

Last thing anyone wants obviously is something to happen during the Derby again.

UPDATED -- PART 2
The Kentucky Derby entries. The field is limited to a maximum of 20. With THREE defections, horses listed 1 through 23 now comprise the top 20 or maximum field size.

Laurel had some issues in which a retired and respected track super analyzed the course and gave the thumb's up following the suspension of racing.

Novices can speculate and I include myself in that territory but I have many contacts who are on the peripheral and inside the grounds whose opinions vary greatly. Those people are not directly at the tracks in question.

It is disheartening because this is a wonderful sport with tireless workers whose care and dedication is matchless especially with care to animals.

If it was one issue, I think the situation would be mollified. It could be weather, medications, training techniques and sundry other issues. But the guessing game isn't limited to people like us.

As I said....d'oh! :sarcasm:

The 23 is now in. Remove #20.

  • Todd Pletcher: He is 11 5-4-1 since April 29 (mostly at Kentucky and New York tracks). He is 3-1-1 in his past five MSW races.
Belmont (New York):
  • Race 1: Princess Celina (Jose Ortiz/Wesley Ward) trounced the field in her maiden race. Ward is 36% with first-timers in 2023.
  • Jose Ortiz rode three winners.
  • Opening Day: The last time Belmont hosted a live race was July 10, 2022. Thr race calendar for NYRA the remainder of the year:

July 13 - September 4
40 (143)

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Kieron Magee (42%/75%) is the winningest trainer at the meet with 10 victories. He stands a good chance of being top conditioner through the weekend. His biggest star is former Bob Baffert-trainee Classier who won a stakes.
  • Damon Dilodovico is hit-or-miss this meet with an impressive 50% strike. He is 10 5-0-0.
  • Race 1: Run for Your Life (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) broke his maiden in his second try. The 3-year-old gelding is a son to hot sire Bolt d'Oro and was purchased for $300,000 by the famed owners Mike Repole and Vinny Viola. Did they name the horse after the Beatles' song?

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Attendance: 54,848 which is up 14,6% from the comparable date in 2022, known locally as Thurby, which set an attendance record since the date has been tracked.
  • Race 10: Annapolis (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $300,000 Opening Verse Stakes in a photo finish. Annapolis is 9 6-2-0 and returned to racing after the disappointment in last year's Breeders' Cup.

  • Race 11: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $58,000.

races that make me wonder and scratch my head.

the last race of today's churchill's card. horse trained by stall ran 2 races at the fair grounds at 6f with itme of 1:11 and change. today at 7f wins at a final time of 1:22 and change with a 1:10 time at the 6f mark. a 10 week layoff can actually make a horse improve that much?

Layoffs generally are of lesser concern with turf races but this one on dirt all I can offer is a highly priced colt, a solid sire and some decent works on the track.
