It is officially Kentucky Derby week. Looking back at some select races:

Has it been 50 years since Secretariat?

Alysheba had a misstep approaching the stretch but what a recovery in the 1987.

The favorite that year was Demons Begone who broke his maiden at Philadelphia Park but was vanned off in the Derby due to bleeding; however, he lived a long life after the race had concluded.

  • Phil D'Amato went 9 6-0-1 at the two main California tracks this weekend including 3 3-0-0 at Golden Gate and 6 3-0-1 at Santa Anita. He is a top-notch turf trainer. he won all five stakes in which he entered and that includes three graded.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Closing Day: Today was the finale of the meet. Manny Franco (jockey) and Linda Rice (trainer) won their respective categories. Franco dominated the meet with and finished with a 30% winning pct. The final race of the day was canceled due to reported lightning strikes in the area.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Forest Boyce was winless at the Laurel meet. Today she won the first two races and betting her in the double paid $137 in shortened fields as Maryland is sloppy.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Emisael Jaramillo had a quiet winter meet (9%/29%) but he won three times today.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $11 million.
  • Race 6: Queenof the Temple (Joe Bravo/Dan Blacker) won the $100,000 Santa Barbrara Stakes.
  • Race 7: Mastering (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) was cold on the board and sent off at 8-to-1 -- astronomical for Baffert in California -- and won an AOC race.
  • Race 8: Macadamia (Tiago Pereira/Phil D'Amato) won the $100,000 Wilshire Stakes.

Here is one that won't make the telecast but may interest you.

There is a racehorse named GOSTISBEHERE and the owner is a Bobby Orr fan -- followed his career going back to the 70s Cup teams.

Unrelated and coincidentally, Gostisbehere, the player, is married to the daughter of a thoroughbred owner and met his wife at Saratoga Race Course.

NEW YORK
It appears the consolidation of the Aqueduct and Belmont race courses is one step closer. How "substantial" is defined is the great variable but when that is deemed sufficient Aqueduct will become a casino and other non-racing purposes.

The plan envisions NYRA will repay the $455 million loan—to be used for major projects including the construction of a new, smaller grandstand and track work—in 20 years. Money for the repayment will come from revenue-sharing proceeds NYRA receives from video lottery terminal receipts at the Aqueduct-based casino.
Upon "substantial" completion of the Belmont construction project, NYRA has agreed it will end its lease with the state for Aqueduct, thereby permitting the state to move ahead with development of a prime piece of Queens real estate.
Under the legislation Hochul and lawmakers have appeared to agree to, NYRA will "in good faith" take steps to ensure that NYRA jobs tied to Aqueduct are protected when that track closes.
The legislation states that upon the closure of Aqueduct it is the "intention of the Legislature for race dates presently conducted at Aqueduct racetrack to be transferred and conducted at Belmont Park racetrack." It says the number of racing dates at Belmont upon the closure of Aqueduct shall be agreed to by NYRA, the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and, as is already the case, the state Gaming Commission. If NYRA and the private racing associations can't agree on Belmont race date numbers, the Gaming Commission will determine the number on its own.

Terrible jockey spill in the first race at Thistledown today. Apprentice Jockey Mauro Cedillo went off his mount (horse ran on and was OK). Equibase full chart said "bad step" by the horse. The remainder of the card was cancelled. No word on his condition, but the cancellation of the remaining races is not a good sign. It was a sloppy track so that, hopefully, was the reason for the cancellation. Keeping my fingers crossed that the kid is OK.

================

Apprentice jockey Mauro Cedillo, a 24-year-old native of Guatemala, was hospitalized on Monday following a spill during the running of the first race at JACK Thistledown racetrack in North Randall, Ohio.
Cedillo was racing on the lead aboard Spectacular Road, the 2-1 second choice in the 5 1/2-furlong race for $5,000 claimers run over a sealed muddy track, when the 10-year-old gelding appeared to stumble, his nose momentarily going down toward the ground. Cedillo was tossed over the horse's neck, landing awkwardly, and then somersaulting after appearing to get struck by a horse racing directly behind him.
Cedillo was attended to at the scene and then transported to a local hospital before being taken by helicopter to the emergency room at MetroHealth Medical Center's main campus, about 15 miles away from the track in Cleveland.

A large step closer to the consolidation of Aqueduct and Belmont with the land of the former eventually being sold. Belmont, as expected, will be in the mix to host a Breeders' Cup. The most recent BC not held in Kentucky or California came in New Jersey in 2007.

The addition of a winterized building paired with new racing surfaces and a synthetic track will result in a facility suitable to host thoroughbred racing on a year-round basis. When complete, the redevelopment will allow NYRA to consolidate all downstate racing and training activities at the new Belmont Park, unlocking 110 acres of New York State-owned land at Aqueduct Racetrack for development opportunities. Located adjacent to JFK Airport and on a major public transit line, the Aqueduct parcel was recently appraised at a value of $1 billion.
A new and re-imagined Belmont Park will guarantee the return of the Breeders' Cup World Championships to New York after a lengthy absence. In November, the Breeders' Cup announced its commitment to add Belmont to the rotation of host venues following NYRA's modernization of the facility. Despite the prominent role played in the year-end championships by New York based trainers, jockeys, and owners, the Breeders' Cup has not been held at Belmont since 2005 due to the facility's aging infrastructure and lack of winterized hospitality options.

Mauro Cedillo is listed as in intensive care as within the most recent update issued by his agent earlier this morning.

Edit: on a ventilator.

Another hideous spill. 5 of 8 horses/jockeys involved in race 4 at Parx. This one could be very ugly.

Mauro Cedillo is moving his feet though heavily sedated per an update. Hopefully the movement is a positive sign. A further update is expected today after tests have been conducted.

Caught the tail end of the Parx announcer update on the spill. Adorno and Pennington are off mounts and will undergo "further evaluation". No other info-but if the races are continuing I'd imagine that no one is in serious peril.

It's the one thing I hate about the otherwise great sport. Well, getting nosed at the wire on a longshot and being DQ'd, but I digress.

A brief mention to Pennington by a rider here:
