Did anyone ever figure out what happened to Arrogate? He had like pain in his neck and then had trouble standing or something and was then euthanized. But I don't recall and actual cause of death because I don't think anyone ever heard of that happening.

I don't remember anything specific being issues following the necropsy report. I seem to recall the neck issue was one thing but an illness developed and from there he was euthanized. It sounded to me as if paralysis set. Whether it was equine virus or not it was almost certain to be neurological.

And oddly enough, today at the Ocala sale, an agent representing Amr Zedan just purchased a colt worth $1.45 million from Arrogate's last crop. The sale's topper so far:

The annual discussion of disadvantages of the inside slot is overwhelming compared to any talk of the #2; however, the skid of the latter is longer. Perhaps that is because the ITM is among the highest.

All that said, the 6 appears to be the most troublesome spot considering the lower numbers have had more chances of winning than some of the high spots.

Get the stats on all the post positions below, and check back after this year's draw on May 1 for a list updated with the 2023 Derby starters in post position order.

Laurel is carding for Saturday and that includes five stakes. An indication that racing could return but that depends on analysis and approval of appropriate bodies.

Laurel is carding for Saturday and that includes five stakes. An indication that racing could return but that depends on analysis and approval of appropriate bodies.

The card has now been made public. Interesting to see who entered and who did not.

Lacey Gaudet was outspoken against track conditions the past few days. She has nothing entered for Saturday. Damon Dilodovico also did not enter.

Among the many who chose to enter are Brittany Russell, Claudio Gonzalez and Jamie Ness. Russell has horses entered at five tracks this week.

All this said, heavy rain is forecasted for the Baltimore-area this weekend and with that the card may be nullified due to inclement weather.

The potential consolidation of NYRA tracks appears one step closer:

State budget negotiators in New York have reached a tentative deal April 26 to provide the New York Racing Association with $455 million in borrowing to finance a major reconstruction of Belmont Park, a plan that also envisions the future closing of Aqueduct Racetrack to consolidate Thoroughbred racing in the New York City area to a single track.
The looming Belmont deal is a small part of a more than $225 billion state budget plan, which as of Wednesday night was still coming together at the New York State Capitol in Albany.
=====================
The NYRA plan for Belmont calls for the state to loan the racing corporation the funds to renovate the Long Island-based track, with NYRA repaying the $455 million over 20 years via revenue-sharing proceeds it receives from video lottery terminal payments from the casino located at Aqueduct racetrack. When the Belmont project is substantially completed, NYRA has agreed it will relinquish its existing lease with the state for Aqueduct racetrack which will free that property up for still-unknown but guaranteed lucrative real estate ventures given its prime location.

@MiamiScreamingEagles

Had a really good day at Keeneland today but bummed
that tomorrow is the last day.

Had Saez and Kenneally in the 7th went wire to wire and paid 23.

Had Brittany Vanden Berg in the 9th at 12 to 1.
Finished second to another wire to wire winner.
Which I did not like. Cost me a nice pick 3.
Ran him underneath though but got screwed
with the prices.
41 dollars winner with a 11 dollar place price on my
12 to 1 shot.
Full 12 horse field exacta should have paid at least 400
for a deuce. Maybe more.
Came back 340 for a deuce.
Not really mad but not really happy. Lol

When you see horses coming from Keeneland
out of 2 turn turf races.
Keep in mind that hardly anyone closes.
Speed is dominate.
Should get some overlays on horses that will
not look that good.
But were running against the bias.

That is a tough beat. Having 12-to-1 shots place can be exasperating. Chris Emigh rode, he is married to BVB. I have used them often at Illinois tracks but the cat was quickly out of the bag.

Great rider.
He is one of the best. I followed Gaffalione out of the gate, excuse the pun.

In the Derby, I am secretly rooting for Jareth Loveberry. What a story on one of the racing sites. A Michigan native who rode at Great Lakes Downs which was called a bull ring. Michigan had a few tracks go under and now only trotters remain...sounds like Massachusetts. I barely recall Great Lakes.

  • Laurel announced that racing has been removed from the turf for Saturday's revival.
  • Gulfstream has announced that racing is off the turf for Saturday's opening race.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Record Setting Handle: $224 million bet on the 15-day prestigious meet.
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode three winners en route to another Kentucky riders' title. Gaffalione was tied with Luis Saez entering today's final day but his three wins gave him 21 victories and snapped the 18-18 tie. Gaffalione survived a spill about a week ago. He won the Keeneland spring meet last year as well and has an abundance of titles within the state of Kentucky the past five years or so (official accounts will be made most likely).
  • Tyler Gaffalione and Luis Saez hooked up for an entertaining finale:

  • Wesley Ward won the trainers' title with one more victory than Brad Cox.
  • Race 8: War Like Goddess (Joel Rosario/Bill Mott) won the $300,000 Grade3 Bewitch Stakes, a rare 1 1/2 mile turf race. She has earned over $2.1 million with 10 wins in 14 starts. The 6-year-old daughter to English Channel is an incredible 3-for-3 in this race, almost unheard of these days.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Rudy Rodriguez had lost with his past 41 starters and last won March 26. He had a 2-win day tofay.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Returned to Racing: Though off the turf.
  • Jevian Toledo has a wonderful day winning his last four rides and finishing 6 4-1-1.
  • Race 5: Classier (Jevian Toledo/Kieron Magee), a $775,000 former Bob Baffert trainee, won.
  • Race 7: Goodgirl Badhabits (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) is 2-for-2 lifetime and has won by more than 22 lengths total. Russell may have something here. The Mastery filly cost $135,000 and is owned by the same outfit that had Jack Christopher who at last check remains in Chad Brown's stable. Russell is getting impressive owners. This filly has a bright future.

  • Race 9: Princess Kokachin (Jevian Toledo/John Robb) won the stakes. The trainer entered three.

Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • John Rigattieri: Add another winner to his remarkable year 2023 in which he is winning at a 34% clip. That would exceed his best winning percentage since numbers were tabulated in 1972. He trained in the 1960s.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Meet opener: The meet runs 4/29/2023-7/3/2023.
  • Luis Saez rode three winners and became the third jockey in North America to reach 100 wins in 2023. Irad Ortiz, Jr. is the runaway leader and Harry Hernandez, who rides Turf Paradise, is second.

  • Race 9: Frank's Rockette (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $175,000 Roxelana Stakes for older females. She is 12-for-27 lifetime and has earned close to $1.5 million with all 10 wins stakes or graded.

  • Race 5: Sidekick (Luis Saez/Steve Asmussen) won a $125,000 MSW and broke his maiden after hitting-the-board in his prior four career starts.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Umberto Rispoli headed north from southern Cal and won four times.
  • Phil D'Amato sent out two horses and both won.
  • Race 11: Balnikhov (Umberto Rispoli/Phil D'Amato) was sent off the favorite and held off a challenge that resulted in two 50-1+ shots finishing second and third in the $250,000 Grade 3 San Francisco Mile. The Irish-bred has been a dream purchase exceeding $500,000 following a $31,000 buy at a 2020 auction. The gelding has raced at major facilities such as Churchill. Keeneland, Del Mar and Santa Anita since coming to America.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $12 million.
  • Race 3: Paris Secret (Kazushi Kimura/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Providencia Stakes.

  • Race 9: Adare Manor (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Maria Stakes.

  • Juan Hernandez rode three winners.
