Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

correct on everything but the Drury point, he never gave an indicator about any kind of long-term moves.

Canes gets a player that can actually be on their roster for a couple more seasons. And can be 30-40 goal scorer. Plus they save face by getting a first in return.

Pens take the risk of Rantanen not returning, but Crosby gets marquee winger and the superstar they’ll need after the trio is finished. Yes, again risky, but they need to take it. That 14-21 overall pick though necessary, is not in Crosby’s 2 year plan
 
This whole thing is unbelievably funny lol. (No offense Canes fans, you guys deserve better)

Trading for this guy without assurances that he would sign an extension was always a massive gamble.

If I’m Carolina I’m keeping him and hoping for the best. (A cup)

Absolutely, or at least paying a fair price for Rantanen as a rental.

I think the problem starts with the fact that teams can no longer have conditional trade pieces based on a player extending (or not) with his new team.

So knowing that the Canes were put into a position (I can only assume) that they had to pay a price more than what just a rental would cost in case Rantanen extended. Because if he does extend, then the cost was probably fair?

Ultimately, Carolina never should have done this deal without either insisting they talk with Rantanen's agent ahead of the trade to discuss an extension or if not, told Colorado that without that they're only paying for a "rental" and nothing more.

I think Florida will take a swing for him. They have enough space at $5.2MM I believe so no real need there have a 3rd party retain on him.

Unless it's Bennett (I think he's the UFA right?) then any deal likely has to be for an extended Rantanen otherwise yeah there isn't much Florida would be able to offer that Carolina would want.

Assuming he'd be willing to do a sign & trade, what could Florida realistically offer for a signed Rantanen. It would be a lot.
 
I think a big question is here is whether other teams already have permission to talk to Rantanen’s camp about an extension (or not).

It sounds like Colorado had granted something like that to Carolina before the original trade happened. Did other teams also get this privilege then too?

But I can’t imagine Rantanen will get more than the Guentzel-ish trade package if he is only going as a rental.

And even if a team does get permission to talk to him first—neither the acquiring team nor Rantanen would have incentive to tell Carolina that he is willing to re-sign with the new club. The team that acquires him before the deadline can sign him to the 8-year term without Carolina’s help. And if you are the player, why weaken the team you are going to any more than you have to?

Just so messy on Carolina’s part. It feels like they’ve really backed themselves into a corner with not many good solutions left.
 
I don't see what Florida could possibly offer.

Verhaeghe has a full NMC and if Carolina is flipping Rantanen because they couldn't sign him, why would they take on another upcoming UFA in Bennett?

And Lundell is probably intriguing, but without knowing that Bennett is staying, why would Florida flip him? I suppose if they come to terms with both Rantanen and Bennett before the trade, they could dangle him...

For Florida the only piece of interest is Lundell. If he’s not on the table I’d rather just keep him unless Florida is giving their next 4 1st round picks whenever they have them

Yeah that’s how I saw that too. He played a hand to get the playing time he should’ve been getting already. I never thought he was leaving anytime soon other than like this. An underated negative aspect of this for the Canes was that between KK and Drury they had an extra bottom six center - so they could add one in a trade. Drury being cheaper and consistent at the role made him a valuable throw in on any deal. We don’t really have much that’s expendable and still worth something right now. I think Drury had more trade value than Roslovic does.

Assuming Florida has an extension in place with Bennett and can get one with Rantanen:

To Florida: Rantanen + Kotkaniemi ($9.445M)
To Carolina: Lundell + Samoskevich ($5.925M)

Florida keeps loading up with Rantanen and gets a replacement 3C.

Carolina gets a really good young player who's signed that can push Staal down to 3C, a good young winger, and ~3.5M of cap space to go out and get a Ryan Donato or someone like that.

No, it was specifically reported that Colorado did not allow Carolina to discuss a potential extension with Rantanen before the trade. They took a giant swing, and it might become a huge miss.

I think an extended Rantanen fetches quite a bit more than that. Adding Kotkaniemi into the trade makes it weird

Sure, but at this point in the season, how many teams would Rantanen be willing to extend with? He could very well say it's either Florida or UFA... at which point the Hurricanes are in a tough spot.

Do you lose him and try to re-use the cap in free-agency, or try to get back a piece like Lundell?

Then we would either keep him or trade him to the highest rental bid. If he’s willing to extend with Florida then it’s a big package coming back. Rantanen doesn’t have trade protection so the team has options.

Florida can’t afford him in the offseason without making significant cap moves. They likely can’t pull this off by just waiting it out and signing him. Canes control who gets to talk to him right now and theoretically until July 1

Would a team pay more than Lundell and Samoskevich to get him as a rental? Personally I don't think so.

You could probably get more of a futures-oriented package (a couple 1st round picks, a top-end prospect), but what good does that for the Hurricanes who want to win now?
 
Given what is said about why he won't sign with the canes i cant see him extending with anyone before 3pm eastern Friday.

Maybe with more time he likes whatever team he's on whether it be Canes, or a team he's traded to.

Lundell the young centre? IMO there’s zero chance Florida would trade that guy for Rantanen.

dont see us trading lundell cause that opens a gap in center for us and Lundell is bascially a 2C

Only trade i see is CV but hed have to waive his NMC and we dont have a lot of cap space to resign some core pieces with a rantanen deal assuming its 10m+

Since we have no first rounders till 2050 giving up one of our last good prospects would be a huge gamble
