Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

unless Rantanen is re-signing I don't think you're getting anyone close to Knies in value...he's a powerforward pacing for 30 goals in his sophomore season

Considering LA is souring on Clarke, it seems like he's a natural fit. Though I believe Carolina is best off just keeping Rantanen as a self-rental and seeing if he wants to re-sign after the playoffs
The fit as trading partners between Toronto and Carolina is unbelievably bad. I’m not saying the Leafs should trade Knies but literally there is not another piece on the team or in the organization that is realistically available and of any interest at all

He'd be purely a rental for Dallas. Extending him could cause major cap issues in the next couple of seasons for them

I think LA makes the most sense if Rantanen is willing to sign there

That's fair, I don't see how they fit either. Toronto won't want to give up Knies for a rental and Carolina would understandably want more than our prospects

Honestly my Devils brokering the deal to LA for a high pick to do 50% retention might be worth it for the fan meltdown. Yes my team's own fanbase irritates me that much. And if they don't get pieces that eat all the IR cap space sure why not

Why would NJ be included?

The Canes have all their retention slots available and can get the cap hit down to $2.3M all on their own and last I checked LA had over $4M in space

Ya NJ doesn’t need to be included in this as @spockBokk mentioned. We can retain and all on our own and get the best package possible

Marner for Rantanen. Time for the Leafs to make their Kawhi trade.
Why does Carolina do this?

Mikko isn't signing until Free Agency comes around.
If his group sets his price and somebody meets it why would he wait for it to maybe be withdrawn, perhaps because he was injured in a playoff game playing for a team he knew he was leaving.

It’s tough for guys to go into the playoffs without a deal for the next season.

Especially if their future value exceeds a hundred million dollars.

Would you risk one hundred million dollars so some random team you’ve played for 2 weeks can have a playoff run? I would not.

If they can get Marner to extend that would salvage the value initially given up for Rantanen.

Marner's right-handed, plays a 200' game, isn't completely lost at C despite being mostly a RW in Toronto, and has a good career FO%.

If he's willing to sign and skip UFA, we have the cap space to make him a win-win offer?

Canes got Rantanen to push them over the edge in the playoffs. Marner has a history of not doing that at all.

Marner also has an NMC and doesn’t want to leave Toronto, so maybe the bigger question is why does Marner do this?

Christ I didn't realize Marner had a full NMC. Dubas masterclass. Never mind then.
