Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

I read that as Carolina doing their diligence as well as putting pressure on Rantanen to commit to signing an extension.

Not sure how much it's worth, but ESPN's Emily Kaplan mentioned that Carolina "had intel" that they were a team Rantanen was interested in before the trade. Interesting couple days for sure.

Dundon isn’t in the industry to make friends. He’s not trying to be GM for Team USA, and he doesn’t give a shit what the agents think. That’s what they’re complaining about when they say he’s “not afraid” to tell them his opinions. Why should he be afraid? He became a billionaire by winning in negotiations, and he is more equipped to be in the room for contract negotiations than the majority of NHL GMs. Of course he doesn’t respect the agents when they do their song and dance, and of course they hate him for it.
And his/the team's antics have already cost them two premium UFAs and almost their (at worst) top-3 in the league coach multiple times. He made a ton of money by being an asshole and winning at all costs in every negotiation. The NHL is not subprime auto loans though. You have a bunch of repeated interactions with the same 100 people and like it or not they take this stuff seriously and don't like being treated like shit. He'd be wise to play the game in some capacity even if he doesn't like it.

That's interesting, because to the best of my knowledge, Rantanen claimed the trade was a total shock and they didn't see it coming...something isn't adding up on his end.

aho and rantanen gave an interview in finnish where aho mentioned texting rantanen to ask if a trade was possible a handful of days before the trade actually happened, so the "total shock" angle is pretty much proven false

So what you're saying is...Rantanen is a...LIAR!!#$#$#@!#$!

This seems very real now.

Closing in on Friday’s 3pm ET trade deadline with a quickie blog for a Wednesday night.
According to multiple sources, the Carolina Hurricanes are doing their Mikko Rantanen due diligence, checking out potential returns as either a rental or with an extension — assuming he’s willing to sign anywhere before July 1.
Among the teams believed to be very interested are Toronto, Dallas and Los Angeles — although that’s a ridiculously incomplete list. Who wouldn’t want him at a $2.3 million cap hit, if Carolina retained 50 per cent of Rantanen’s salary. But, a trade return would be much better for the Hurricanes if Rantanen agreed to extend with a new team, something else everyone’s trying to determine.
There are teams willing to step up in exchange for long-term security.
If Carolina does not like the offers, they can keep the winger and make a run. But they have opened the door and we will see where this goes.

gotta always get Toronto in there lol

Maybe he and aho had conversations about if Colorado doesn’t work out he could want to go there.

In the summer venting I. Finland. Then his agent could be telling him the negotiations are going well in Jan then boom.
