When Hronek has not had to cover for ECHL quality partners, he has been a legit first pair defenseman.

On a stacked Stanley Cup contender he would be a second pair guy. On a bubble team he is a legit 1D.

The only problem Hronek has is that he cannot cover the entire sheet of ice while covering for guys like Lindstrom/Oesterle/Hagg/Chiarot.

You know, the same Chiarot that dragged Seider down to like a -28 before Lalonde finally separated them?

I hope Hronek gets paired with Hughes and rips off 70p next year.
This is a kind of wild take on Hronek. He’s been good this year and part of last because Seider pushed him down to the 2nd pairing and this year we got Maatta to babysit his defensive deficiencies. We’re a bubble team. He is not close to a 1D on our team.

If we don’t acquire n RD I think this means Stevie has his eyes on Reinbacher at the draft.

Yzerman thinking for next year?

Walman - Seider
Maata - Wallinder
Edvinsson - Chiarot

Maybe a surprise from GR (AlJo?) or Free Agency?

If there isn’t another move here, you have to believe he feels one or both of Ed & Wallinder will be ready for a top 4 role next season. Hard to imagine he’d be aiming at FA to address the top pairings after the Chiarot deal.

I'm relieved we didnt land Chychrun. Sure he's a great player, but I have no desire to take on a guy who's injured all the time. I'm curious what the plan is to replace Hronek.
Wallinder/Edvinsson. I think Yzerman is extending the rebuild.

Expect there to be a lot of cap space left on the table next year. Again.

Is this a good move? Now we have one less solid NHL defender for a mid to late 1st and 2nd. This seems to set us back from being competitive even longer.

You very well may be right, but I can't say I love that. D are not forwards, they can take quiet a while to develop into legit top defenseman. Ill be very curious to see how the next few days play out.

I thought Hronek would bring two seconds from a playoff team. Receiving a first and a high second is huge win. It is really hard to debate that this is a bad trade from Detroit's perspective.

Yzerman gets an A+

As I said earlier, Yzerman may not be done yet. But honestly it wouldn't kill me if he is done until the offseason.

Just realized we got a 23 2nd from a tanking team, that's gonna be in the mid 30s

And I get to cheer for a team to tank that isn't my own. I never thought a wings trade could make me this happy. I like the player a lot but that payday after next season is going to be too much and this return is solid.

My gut tells me that both Ed & Wallinder will not be up to start the season. I think that other spot will be filled by either a guy we trade for or a UFA signing.

Unfortunately I think you’re right. As a bipolar fan of this club, I often get pretty high on the trajectory of the current team and think we aren’t that far off. Then I tune into big games (where the opponent is actually playing with purpose) and it makes me sick.

While I think the defensive unit will be in good shape, our youth still needs another couple years to ripen. The forwards are the issue. We have so many dime-a-dozen guys up front, it’s sad. Outside of Larkin, there isn’t a single game-changer or superstar. Raymond didn’t take the jump many of us were hoping. Berggren could be alright. Ras took a step, sure, but man… Vrana seems like a bust. Bert will be gone, and his back surgery/other injuries are going to shorten his career anyways. Perron’s age becoming noticeable. Fabbri and his knees look washed. List goes on. And then for forward prospects, there’s some guys but let’s be honest, we’re all sorta banking on Kasper turning into a two-way superstar, which I don’t think he’ll be.

I hate the thought of rebuilding the rebuild, but Steve certainly has two eyes. Two good ones. I 100% understand if he goes that route.

I'm hoping they dont get the top 12 this year and just risk it that the Isles suck next year. Get into the top 7 or so. The east is tough and I think its worth the risk even with a deep draft this year

And that could certainly be the case right..
I guess my point was this trade provides me with assurance and confidence Steve & co project either Ed or Wallinder (or both) to be with the big club playing meaningful minutes soon. Which is a good feeling.

Why does getting rid of Hronek extend the rebuild? He was never a core piece. On a good team he is a #4/5 that leans offensively instead. As soon as 93 year old Maatta was off his pair his numbers sunk. And he was never very good defensively and was easily pushed around. The Ottawa games showed that.

Losing Hronek hurts this year. It only hurts next year if the idea is Lindstrom as #2RD. There are a few free agent options that we can gun for.
