25 year old defenseman who is top 20 in defenseman scoring on the season... why wouldn't we get something good for him?

Are we going to get a player as good as him with that late 1st/2nd round pick?
Well for starters it was mostly me making a dumb joke. I'm honestly pretty shocked by this move.

I liked Hronek and he's mostly been a nice surprise, though not irreplaceable. I have to think Yzerman isn't finished yet.

I don't think this was a trade you have to say yes to, by any means. We literally got more for Tatar. Hronek is a 25 year old defenseman that produces offense. Those typically have value. We also don't really have anything on the right side past Seider now, so I hope there is some kind of plan there.
The return for Tatar was a once in a lifetime thing

Wouldn't it still be the NYI pick?

I don't think there's any real chance that the NYI are a lotto team next year.
I just realized the condition on the pick originated with NYI. I thought it was the Islanders pick but that Vancouver put the condition on it when they traded it to us.

Now I see.

The Red Wings on Wednesday dealt defenseman Filip Hronek to the Vancouver Canucks for first- and second-round selections.

The first-rounder this year originally belonged to the Islanders (swapped in the Bo Horvat trade) but will be moved to 2024 and be unprotected if New York fails to reach the playoffs. The second-rounder is Vancouver’s in 2023. The Canucks also obtained Detroit’s fourth-round pick this year.

Draft picks are overrated. The posts above me sum it up nicely re the rarity of offensive defenceman and chances of finding someone good/better with the puck is rare.
Wings drafted and signed a lot of D in the past 4 years.
Some need to be moved to make room for incoming prospects.

Yup, we knew that… makes total sense

Are you f***ing kidding me? 10 years ago I bought a Lidstrom jersey. This year, I told myself I needed a jersey of a current player. So I bought a jersey of my favorite player on the team this past Christmas.
Last jersey I bought was a Helm jersey.

Its fortunate I live in colorado now so I can go to Wings-Avs games and not get spit on 'cus of Helm. Avs fans are ruthless.

Hronek has a lot of offensive potential. I love the trade but its not like he is Lindstrom....

Nobody tell him that was Seider he was watching, not Hronek

Allvin also said he thought he got "3 first rounder" value for the Horvat trade. He thinks his fan base is stupid lol.

Wouldn't it still be the NYI pick?

Yeah it would still be the Isles pick next year.

I would prefer the mid-round pick this year in a deep draft than what will probably be a lower pick in next year's draft. I can't imagine the Isles will be worse next year.

Why did the Red Wings trade Hronek?

We have yet to hear from general manager Steve Yzerman, but the most logical answer would have something to do with Hronek’s breakout year and it’s timing with relation to his contract. Hronek has exploded for nine goals and 38 points in 60 games this season, with one year remaining on his current contract at a $4.4 million AAV. That production will give him grounds for a substantial raise.

If the Red Wings did not want to be the ones to pay that raise, then moving him now makes sense, especially for a return that includes both a first and second round pick. The first-rounder is the same pick Vancouver got from the Islanders in the Horvat trade, and is top-12 protected, but there is now potential for Detroit to have two picks in the top 20 of this draft. — Bultman

Supposedly the 1st is top 12 protected, but that's all. If it's top 12, it becomes a 2024 1st instead.

That's going to be quite the valuable 2nd rounder, too. That's a ton of value to get.
I'm taking over Vancouver fans hopes that they suck this year and next year baby BRING ON THE 2024 UNPROTECTED 1ST!

I just don’t get it though, could Hronek not have settled into a 5-6 role for the next decade even with prospects coming aboard? I think Ed is a 1st pairing guy, Wallinder 2nd, and Johansson either 2-3.

The more I think about this deal, the more I dislike it. It seemed totally unnecessary.

Hopefully the 1st rolls over to next year b/c then it would be unprotected and it will be fun to watch the islanders and root against them all year.

Top 12 protected is fine. I imagine the Isles are pushing hard, as evident by the Horvat trade, and finish somewhere around 10-11 in the east at worst.

Someone will take a flyer on Zadina for like a 6th, or even future considerations. That's still a trade.

It would be. But why include that in this discussion as if it’s a major change. It sounds like you just have a gripe with Zadina and want him gone, not because it’s a logical move.

I think the easiest answer is that Yzerman doesn't like the profile of Hronek as a d-man. He wants his blueline big and mobile. An opportunity to sell high on Hronek was too good to pass up.

I love this trade. I would do this 10/10 times every day of the week. Very solid return for a player who was having a very good year and one that I was never really a fan of.
