How is golf considered a real sport?

I ask this in all seriousness. This has been a nagging thought in my brain for a few years. In every other major sport you can use physical activity to hit or impede another person's progress.

In golf you are literally trying to hit a ball into a hole. You are not competing against anyone, just the course. There is no contact. You line up at the green and swing your club and try to stay under par. This is not a sport.

Discuss.

Golf is a sport. It requires physical strength and a high amount of skill.

Not all sports require 2 teams or individuals going directly against each other.

Bowling is also a sport.

Driving is a skill. Putting is a skill. Approach shots are a skill.

How ya gonna lump it into "golf is a skill."

I really don't like golf. Most boring sport to watch by far and I'm terrible at it. But I'll defend it as a sport, because it most definitely is one.

A sport is not defined as "requiring physical strength and skill"...

A sport is, actually, (loosely) defined as "2 teams or individuals going directly against each other".

It's a sport for unsporty people, which isn't to say that athletes don't or that only unathletic people play it.

Yeah there's a very high skill level and it's competetive, but a lot of people play it to relax, as a leisure activity. Certainly a golf injury doesn't have the same kudos as a football or hockey injury, or even a running injury. There is minimal exertion involved, even if you cover a lot of territory getting around; along with minimal courage or risk; unless an alligator takes your hand or you try and kick a gun toting psychopath off your golf course when you have a heart condition.

I'm always with Hemingway on the subject of golf.

Here's the thread that gets made in the lounge every month like clockwork with the single intention of pissing Ser Woof off.

If you think Golf isn't a sport, you're an idiot... the end.

That why you don't need to be in shape to play golf?

Where is the athletic ability in golf? Hitting the ball and walking to it isn't a sport. Driving a golf cart in a non competitive manner is not a sport.
