Golf sucks, but it is absolutely a sport. I haven't played a round after I didn't make the varsity team in my senior year of high school. I ****ing hated playing it, but wanted a letter jacket because all my time was spent playing club hockey in Atlanta (or recovering from two broken/sprained ankles from said club hockey).
I tend to think those who don't call it a sport have never played it beyond the miniature circuit. The absolute precision you need is amazing, even just hitting off the plastic tee at the driving range. I would go every day in the winter to the range after school and you would hit a ball 250 yards with a driver straight down the middle, and the next shot would hook. Once you learned how to take a slap shot on the ice, it didn't take long to learn to adapt it to a one-timer.
Just getting consistent swing down was impossible for me. Then having to use different clubs, it was a **** show.
