How are you feeling about Tavares these days?

Some fans exaggerate his poor play and it seems there are a few more that jump on bad news to inflame their lynch mob mentality. Classic example was yesterday’s GDT, the 1st period hadn’t even ended and someone posted, JT 4 giveaways… well a few more lynchers jumped all over it to further the agenda. Turns out JT only had 1 giveaway the entire game.

People love to hate him because of his salary. Meanwhile, he is still one of the best second line centres in the league.

The Matrix
Seems eerily similar to the beginning of the season when everyone thought he looked faster, than once the rest of the league got their legs, Turtle John showed up. We just have to accept he’s a PP tip in specialist at this point

Seems like when he gets load management he comes back noticeably fresher.

I never liked the signing. Also this:

"The $17.8-million sum accounts for a US$15.25-million signing bonus in the contract's first year, which "was integral to Tavares’ decision" to accept the deal, the appeal states. It adds the player rejected higher offers from other teams, including a seven-year, US$91-million contract from the San Jose Sharks."

So much for rejecting more to come play here. I am really tired of these greedy players. This team is so unlikable, especially this year, it's astonishing.

Hearing confirmation that San Jose really did offer $91 million and that JT left $14 million on the table to play for his beloved Maple Leafs… must be infuriating to some, no?
also hearing JT came here for the signing bonus

anyway i guess the truth will come out in court

edit: I can see the sauce

Not really, if SJ offered $20Mx8(I know 7 max, but they would have a gentlemen's agreement for another year) it would still be a bad signing @11.5M if you don't need 1st line C. If you have star C on ELC and great 2C signed, signing JT is foolish.

Unless he takes a real discount.

It is not his fault his insane salary started the chain of insane salarys. And i dont hate him at all. But he seem to mellow to be a good captain for this team. And when he is not his best i realy dont like him with Nylander. They can play ok long stretches and still not find the scoresheet together. When that happens i want Keefe to split them a lot faster.. Not wait 20+games. They have started to find the way back. But it could have been a lot soone with right moves from Keefe.

people have endlessly said he took a discount to play here which means they believe he's underpaid

That someone could have been paid more elsewhere, most certainly does not mean they are underpaid, or overpaid. It just means that they could have been paid more elsewhere.

We paid market value, or just below market.... but for what's he's delivered... we've overpaid, though probably not as much as some think. It's a silly argument though... Even if we somehow came to a consensus as to what he should be paid based on his production... it makes no difference in the real world... he's getting paid, what he's getting paid...

That is mostly just them trying to feel like Toronto is a destination. Tavares got a ton of money up front from the Leafs (and is going to court to try and avoid taxes on it) but people don't understand discounting the future value of money.

He was a couple years removed from his Hart finalist days when he signed and has been overpaid his whole contract by a pretty significant degree.

a team may have offered more . teams may have offered less but your play dictates your worth

some of our fans were constantly saying he took a discount to try to make it seems he did us a favor by only signing for 11m to deflect away from the fact he's never been worth that

also do you think Willy will get the same excuses made for him as JT has ? do you think saying ''ppg lol'' will work for him like it did for JT ?

False.

Your market value, is your worth, just like buying a stock, or any other investment.

What return you get, for what you have paid, is whether you get value for that worth.

I still don't know where you guys think you're ever going to get a 2C behind Matthews who paces 70 points (should go back to 70 pace soon), 25-30 goals and 800+ faceoff wins while being technically good at every aspect of the game (he's slow but still a powerful skater).

Maturity and common sense will easily explain why his cap hit is so high, but at the end of the day you're still lucky to have him.
