Got to watch Lights Out tonight (based off the short film) I didn't like it as much as I wanted to but I still enjoyed it and can see why it had positive ratings. I also wanted to be scared more

its very clever that it is basically a movie about battling depression and that whole theme was used very creatively in a horror film, which was actually pretty smart.

It was one of my anticipated big 4 horror movies for 2016. 3 down 1 to go!

Lights Out was ok. Pretty standard horror film. I agree that the mental illness angle was kind of clever.

I also watched The Boy a few nights ago. Another solid horror flick. Not to give too much away, but I liked the attempt at realism in the ending. Didn't make perfect sense but it's better than the supernatural alternative.

Agreed. I like the attempt as well. Changed the movie..

[spoil]from a supernatural to a home invasion style. From a ghost to some pyscho dude in a mask[/spoil]

The one where the lady steals the faces of girls and the clown one. I think they filmed in Ontario somewhere.

Ah yes... :)

The Zeebo The Clown episode "The Tale Of Laughing In The Dark" is still to this day one of my favourites and probably ranks in the top 10 scariest episodes easily.

The face-stealing episode (which was actually part of the Are You Afraid Of The Dark series revival in the late 90's) was lame though.

So yesterday I went on a horror spree and watch all of Candle Cove, Don't breathe, The Boy, 10 Cloverfield lane. I'm currently watching 31. Can anyone recommend some other movies or shows from either this year or last?

Conjuring 1 & 2, Insidious 3 was last year I think and was good. Hush is pretty cool too.

Shows: The Exorcist and American Horror Story are both solid

I've watched all of those movies and shows except insidious 3. I also watched the green room last night. I don't know why that movie was so highly rated.

What movies would you recommend that genuinely scared you? It's tough to find movies that have that effect on me.

If we're excluding jumpscares (which are just loud noises or quick cuts that make everyone jump)
and going with movies that make you feel unsettled or scared i'm gonna go with The Woman In Black.

This movie had such a creepy atmosphere and feel to it. Sure it had jumpscares but for the most part I had such a sense of dread watching it just knowing something was gonna pop out or happen. It was fantastic. Thats when I sort of got into horror movies so at the time I hadn't watched a whole bunch which made the experience even better.

I haven't seen it in a while so I'm not sure if it holds up.

I saw Ouija Origin of Evil Saturday night with a couple friends. It was a decent enough possession film, but in a lot of ways felt like a bit of a rip off of The Conjouring 1/2 (set in the late 1960s, little girl possessed, main character works in the "supernatural business" etc).

It was 10 times better than Ouija, which this new one is a prequel to. Ouija is not worth the time of day to watch. This new one definitely was entertaining for the most part.

It's funny a few posts up saying how sequels rarely live up to the original. In this case it's the complete opposite. No one should bother watching Ouija. But this new one is definitely a respectable attempt at a horror film.

Currently watching I am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House which is a Netflix Original film. Definitely a slow burn so far, but it's interesting. Although I'm not sure if there is going to be much pay off.

Me and the GF watched this, we thought it was absolutely horrible. It was well shot, but tried way too hard to be artistic IMO. I will never watch that movie ever again.

The Eyes of My Mother--artsy, black and white cinematography; flawed but quite creepy nonetheless. Some of the images really stay with you. Intriguing heroine but probably not fun on first dates.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe--takes place mostly in an autopsy room and all the better for it; fine performances by Brian Cox and Emile Hersch, which you don't usually get in this genre; bit of a third act letdown, but a lot of fun anyway.

I finally watched Black Christmas (1974) for the first time last night. I enjoyed it more than I expected. There's something about those 1970s horror films that are just so "classy" (for lack of a better word) compared to nearly everything from 1980 onward. Even when the films don't have much point or substance, like this and Halloween, you still feel the care put into the art of the films (the atmosphere, camerawork, editing, details and so on). That's something that you don't get much of after the 1970s, when horror films (especially slasher flicks) became less about competent filmmaking and more about shock value and hurrying from one gratuitous scene to the next. This one also has a somewhat unique ending, which is a rarity in the genre.

I'll watch the panned 2006 remake tonight or tomorrow, which should make for an interesting comparison. I expect it to lose everything good about the original and be an example of the worst, most unoriginal aspects of modern horror, but I must satisfy my curiosity. EDIT: Yeah, that wasn't good. It maybe wasn't quite as bad in some ways that I expected, but largely made up for it by being stupid in ways that I hadn't expected. It's quite forgettable, whereas the original is more memorable and something that I'd like to eventually watch again.

Finally watched "Don't Breathe" just now.

Personally I don't get the hype with this film. So *this* is the best American horror film to come out in ages?? Really??? *yawn*

I think I'll keep sticking to horror circa 1960-1990 like how I have been for many years.

Which one, you highlighted four different films.

Apologies, I have no idea how that happened. Not to mention the late response so not sure you will see this but it was I am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House that we thought was terrible overall, but it was shot really well.

crap like this get hyped as being great horror movies a lot even when they arent better than the other movies being released

same thing happened with The Babadook and It Follows. Good movies but eztremely overrated. Props to It Follows though for o ly having basically 1 jumpscare in a horror movie in the 2010s

We laughed at the Babadook more than anything and at one point started rooting for the Babadook because we found the main characters annoying.

I loved It Follows though. That soundtrack.

Didn't like It Follows. Solid plot/idea behind it tho, the one and only scare is when the tall dude shows up in the hallway

I liked Don't Breathe because I found its story unique and new. Wasn't just another ghost or demon movie. Plus I'm a big fan of the "home invasion horror" stuff. It was more suspense and thriller than horror but I enjoyed it.

As far as The Babadook all I can say is that little kid was the most annoying thing I've ever seen

No problem. I was bored to tears with that film.

I've recently watched:

The watcher 4/10
Autopsy of Jane Doe 8/10
Eyes of my mother 5/10
Blair witch 3/10

And a bunch of twilight zone, outer limits and tales from crypt episodes. I never knew Forest Whitaker hosts the new version of twilight zone.
