Watched Oculus the other day. Kind of an interesting concept and idea. I liked the overall uncertainty that went along with it. Not the best horror movie that I've ever seen, but pretty cool nonetheless.

..watched a bunch of twilight zone, outer limits episodes. I never knew Forest Whitaker hosts the new version of twilight zone.

I'm with ya on watching lots of Twilight Zone & Outer Limits reruns..
I thought the 2002 Twilight Zones were pretty good.. but my opinion, Whitaker didn't really add much as a narrator. Understood, it's big shoes to fill taking Rod Serling's spot. But the first 2 seasons of the 8os Twilight Zones had better narration. And I really liked the narration Kevin Conway did for the 9os Outer Limits series. Guess sometimes an unseen narrator works better..

I enjoyed the bad acting actually

Meh, it didn't kill the movie for me but it was noticeably bad at times. Mostly the mother, daughter and the bearded brother.

[spoil]Once the chaos on murder begins is when the movie really takes off. Kills off and limits the lines of the bad actors [/spoil]

Saw Split tonight. It was alright, had some cool and suspenseful moments and some boring, unnecessary parts that dragged. I feel like more could have been done to make it scarier or suspenseful. I also HATE seeing horror/suspense/thriller movies in theatres other people take me out of the moment sometimes..

The concept is cool and for the most part it was grounded which made me like it more. I'll have to watch it again (when its streamable) but I'd give it a 6.5/10. Wish the ending was a bit different but it all adds up and makes sense which is fine.

WatchMojo did their top 10 horror franchises since 2000

10. Hatchet
9. V/H/S (First 2 were really good with some weak segments. 3rd one was so bad)
8. [REC] (the first one was one of the best horror movies ever. But I can see it being this low due to the dropoff of the rest)
7. Final Destination (hilarious this is this low. Especially behind The Purge? What??)
6. The Purge (blah)
5. 28 Days/Weeks Later (Needs a 3rd movie.)
4. Paranormal Activity (I don't like these movies, but how is this as far back as 4??)
3. Insidious (I really disagree with this. 2 good movies and now they are just pushing jump scares)
2. Saw (I'd put it 1 because I am a HUGE fan of the continuity through 7 movies even though the last few had some iffy moments/traps)
1. The Conjuring (I think both were pretty overrated but I guess people really love them. Annabelle was absolute garbage though)

HMs:
Sinister (how? Sinister 1 was probably my favorite horror movie of the last few years, but the 2nd one shouldn't have even been made. Fantastic first movie, not a good franchise)
The Grudge (first onewas horrifying to me as a kid but idk)

Now I liked the Hatchet movies but honestly there are a few franchises that should have made the list over it. Would have liked to have seen HMs for Grave Encounters and Dead Snow since 28 days, Sinister and The Conjuring made the list with only 2 movies. No mention of Hostel or The Human Centipede (lol)

Quick nod to Grave Encounters and REC. I feel both don't get nearly enough love. They're amazing horror flicks with good acting, decent writing and lots of scares that aren't over done.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) deserves another mention after kihei's review, which was spot on. I just finished it and found it pretty interesting as the mystery of what happened to the girl slowly unravels. The first two thirds are more CSI than horror, but the atmosphere gradually gets creepier and creepier. I thought that the third act was a bit of a let down, since the first two thirds were so smart and original, but it might appeal more to others and doesn't ruin the recommendation. Overall, it's still one of the smarter scary films that I've seen.

It's a shame so many people crap on the sequel. It's obviously not as good as the 1st one but it's still a solid movie.

Also has Richard Harmon and the guy with flow from Letterkenny

I watched Grave Encounters last night. I'm sorry, but that was terrible and a big waste of time. It's so... amateurish, feeling like a film school project that's way too long. I was getting bored and tired from it and was checking every 10 minutes to see how much time was left. The performances were also bit irritating, but I'll give the actors the benefit of the doubt and put that on the writing and directing of "The Vicious Brothers." Yes, a couple of Coen wannabes who aren't even related actually gave themselves that name and put it all over this movie.

If these "brothers" were trying to make a horror laced with humor, which could've worked, because the premise (of a fraudulent ghost hunter TV show crew being victims of an actual haunting) had that potential, they failed at it, since it just isn't funny. If they were trying to make a pure horror film, they failed at that, too, since it's more lame than scary. For the first hour, the only surprises are inanimate objects moving a few inches on their own (thanks to hidden strings) or figures moving in the background. These are all staged predictably, so you practically see them coming. The rest of the surprises, in the final half hour, are no more original and are horror cliches that you've seen many times before. The deaths aren't even satisfying because hardly anything is shown. Some characters just... disappear and aren't seen again. I guess that that's one way to save money.

I know that it's a low budget indie film, but, instead of coming across as a professional, creative job done on a meager budget, this just looks and feels rather amateurish. I'm reading now that it was released only in "select theaters" and simultaneously went to On Demand services, so it's basically a "straight to video" movie (and feels like one). If I had known that, I would've never bothered with it. Unless you really like "found footage" films, I suggest not bothering with this, either.
