Halloween Tales was quite enjoyable. Reminded me of Trick r' Treat just with more short stories. Nice mix of scary and funny. worth a check.

saw The Wailing, it was really good

Give South Korea's The Wailing a try. It's about a stranger who arrives in a backwoods village with what seems like supernatural chaos in his wake and the not-especially-bright cop who has to figure out what's going on and save his daughter in the process. Currently, the movie is 100% on RT (46 for 46) and 7.6 on IMDb. Intense.

100% is pretty ridiculous compared to another South Korean film

The first trailer for Jordan Peele's horror movie "Get Out" came out.

Looks like a pretty creative idea. I can see how the execution could be botched though. It comes out in February and I'll give it a watch.

Got to watch Lights Out tonight (based off the short film) I didn't like it as much as I wanted to but I still enjoyed it and can see why it had positive ratings. I also wanted to be scared more

its very clever that it is basically a movie about battling depression and that whole theme was used very creatively in a horror film, which was actually pretty smart.

It was one of my anticipated big 4 horror movies for 2016. 3 down 1 to go!

Sinister 2 is so disappointing compared to how awesome Sinister was =/

Sequels to supernatural movies pretty much always disappoint. VHS2 was a surprising one.

I'm seriously getting super stoked for Jeepers Creepers 3 even though I know I shouldn't/

I have yet to see it, had a feeling it wouldn't be as good. The first one was great. I'd rank it up there with Women In Black, Conjuring and Insidious

The Conjuring 2 was a great horror supernatural sequel. But you're right very rarely is any sequel better than the 1st

The Exorcist and AHS are some great horror shows right now. Both have creepy or weird vibes, mixed with some gore and creepy atmosphere.

I'm really enjoying The Exorcist. A lot has happened in 3 episodes and hasn't felt rushed either. Feels like it should be on episode 5 or 6 by now but only ep 3 with episode 4 on tomorrow. Still wish it wasn't slotted on fridays. Hoping this gets renewed for a S2 but obviously needs ratings to do so.

agreed. I've been quite impressed with the Exorcist so far... ratings need to somehow take into acct people that PVR shows like myself and so many others.

Don't Breathe was amazing. Its easily in my top 3 favourite horror/thriller flicks. I really enjoyed this one. Amazing use of sound and some really tense and creepy moments. HIGHLY recommend

I actually have yet to watch it for some reason. I know most sequals suck, but supernatural ones are generally the worst for me. I liked Sinister, didn't expect much at all from the second.

So, I referenced this in the Last Movie You Watched thread. I went to a 24-hour horror movie marathon this weekend (my 12th such even in 13 years). A brief rundown of all of those movies is in that thread, but I wanted to pull out the two premiers/recent releases here if anyone is hunting for something fresh..

Beyond the Gates. Being a man in his late 30s, I am certainly a target for this throwback. Set today, it’s about a pair of brothers cleaning up their father’s video store in the wake of his disappearance. They soon discern that his soul has been pulled into a 1980s/1990s style VHS board game called Beyond the Gates. Well, soon isn’t the right term. It’s a slow-ish build. Ultimately fairly entertaining. The nostalgia kick for classic VHS games is enjoyable if you’re the target (I played A LOT of Nightmare with friends personally) though it isn’t slavish. Wasn’t nuts about the lead actor who resembles a chubbier, stiffer Elijah Wood. Decent balance of laughs to scares. Solid feel for its audience. Won’t blow your mind but fun enough if you have a lingering fondness for the 80s/90s entertainment/games. P.S. Co-writer/producer Stepen Scarlata was at the event (wrote The Final Girl, produced Jodorowsky’s Dune) and was an f-ing mensch.

The Night of Something Strange. The one positive I can say from my personal experience is that I was happy to see this in an amped-up horror marathon crowd because that is the only context that I can give anything resembling an endorsement.

This is an STD horror comedy where people are plagued with a vague radiological virus that turns them into sex-crazy zombie-like monsters. Take spring breakers, yokels and roadside motel and shake them up to get …. mostly a repugnant mess. Another classic example of horror filmmakers weaned on Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson who only see the guts and jokes and think advancement consists of “what if I put this in a vagina?â€

I laughed a few times. I admit that. But my laughs were most often driven out of shock. The creative team can’t land the joke they’re flying. They’re ultimately just immature. It is a gross and juvenile movie at the basest sense. I am by no means a prude, but I know when ratcheted up grossness is substituting for lack of ideas and that joke only goes so far.

What undermines it even more is that the actors across the board are hot garbage. They’re amateurs and it’s evident in every frame. I wish them all happy, healthy and prosperous lives but I hope for their sake this is never one of their default top 3 movies on their IMDB pages.

The one bummer of the event was a planned showing of We are the Flesh. Allegedly it’s fairy edgy and upsetting. Don’t know anything beyond that. The DCP was f-ed up. Just wouldn’t play.

I saw Ouija Origin of Evil Saturday night with a couple friends. It was a decent enough possession film, but in a lot of ways felt like a bit of a rip off of The Conjouring 1/2 (set in the late 1960s, little girl possessed, main character works in the "supernatural business" etc).

It was 10 times better than Ouija, which this new one is a prequel to. Ouija is not worth the time of day to watch. This new one definitely was entertaining for the most part.

It's funny a few posts up saying how sequels rarely live up to the original. In this case it's the complete opposite. No one should bother watching Ouija. But this new one is definitely a respectable attempt at a horror film.

Currently watching I am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House which is a Netflix Original film. Definitely a slow burn so far, but it's interesting. Although I'm not sure if there is going to be much pay off.

Check out Under the Shadow from Iran. Starts out like a domestic drama about a frustrated mom and then about twenty minutes in turns unexpectedly into the best horror film that I have seen this year, all the more effective because it never loses the natural realism that it begins with.

I watched "Pumpkinhead" last night. I also watched "Carrie" last week and the original "Halloween" and Mario Bava's "Black Sabbath" over the weekend. :yo:
