Cool! Just bought a random $14 box at Walmart and pulled a Sid Abel pre Parkie auto. Worth the price of admission.
The only time the Wal-Marts in Edmonton have boxes on sale they look like they've be driven over by the forklift.

And they still aren't that great of a deal.

This wasn't a sale. Some pre-packaged box with 4 packs (12-13 Score, 15-16 UD S2, 18-19 UD S 1&2) that guaranteed 1 auto and 1 jersey so I figured "what the hell" and took a crack (basically expecting garbage). Did better than I expected. Got the Abel, rookie Tobias Stephan jersey, Howden portraits, Montembault rookie portrait, Sheehan rookie.

Was that a joke?

What he means is certain people have extra disposable income to just spend on cards during COVID. I'm one of them.
I'm not going to work...I'm working at home, eating at home, etc, saving money on gas too. And I'm not spending any money on outdoors stuff. So I'm spending money on stuff I can order online such as cards. I got a little extra COVID income due to the $1200 tax refund but I'm saving like $3500 a month in expenses not going to work or eating out. So that all goes to cards.

I've probably bought a few grand in just 80s and early 90s baseball cards, the stuff that is mostly worthless that was everything to me when I was a kid.

No, that's fact.

If you don't know how insane the market is currently on account of covid, you missed out on making good money if you were selling.

You also missed out on assholes buying out retail, saying they work for a distributor and taking all the product in back rooms (specifically Bowman baseball) then posting pictures of doing it online on social media

You also missed out on three big distributors doing everything they can to dictate the market...and now failing at it now that the companies grew wise to what they are doing.

Junk wax went from five dollars a box to 20 with idiots proudly putting "quantity" in the title, low end product is a gold mine right now if you pay low end prices.

And if you have Tatis,Luka, Zion, or Ja, you don't need a job.

Fun times

Any specific players that people are targeting? I opened a few UD series 2 boxes this year and got a Kakko YG and a Shesterkin canvas YG. Kind of want to keep up with the rest of the Rangers rebuild now especially with Lafreniere coming.

So I bit the bullet and bought into an on-line group break. I bought the Bruins slot for $45 ( the price was $50 but I had a $5 credit for joining the guy's mailing list ) and the boxes included were:

3 boxes of 2019-20 Upper Deck Series 1 ( Hobby )
3 boxes of 2019-20 Upper Deck Series 2 ( Hobby )
4 boxes of Upper Deck SP Authentic

So here's what I got from tonight's break. Note that base cards are not included.

Upper Deck Series 1
Young Guns: Karson Kuhlman ( # 248 )
Young Guns Canvas: Trent Frederic ( C - 119 )
UD Portraits: Brad Marchand ( P - 22 )

Upper Deck Series 2
Young Guns: Jack Studnicka ( # 473 )

Upper Deck SP Authentic
Limited Red Parallel: Brad Marchand ( # 30 )
Authentic Moments: Tuukka Rask ( # 101 )
Authentic Moments: Zdeno Chara ( # 114 )
Future Watch Rookie: Jack Studnicka ( #245 )
Acetate Future Watch Rookie: Jack Studnicka ( #245 )
SP Essentials: Brad Marchand ( SPE-BM )

Obviously the Acetate Studnicka card was the best card that I got. Any comments - did I do OK or not so good ????

Nope. This hobby has gone insane since COVID-19 hit. I was hoping the panic would lead to a decrease with people looking to offset cards for cash. They are but it is skyrocketing in the other direction. Collectors are "COVID rich" with nothing to do but buy cards online. I know a guy that runs a shop and he cannot keep up with the prices. Basketball is the hot product now. He has boxes that were $200-300 when released and now selling over $1k. It is insane right now.

Graded cards are also a premium now because the grading companies are backed up.

Was OPC using a different gum manufacturer than Topps during the late 80's and early 90's? My experience opening OPC product from this era has been terrible with too many cards ruined by rancid gum. The worst was a box of '91 hockey that had 2-3 cards per pack destroyed by the mold and moisture from the gum. I have not had the same problem with Topps packs. The worst I have had from Topps was gum that broke down and left dust on the cards. In pack openings I have watched older OPC product also has dry gum,

I know storage condition can be an issue. The OPC packs I have opened have come from different areas of North America but my experience has been the same: disgusting moldy gum with too many sullied cards. Perhaps all coincidence but has lead me to wonder if the gum itself is the issue with the late 80's early 90's OPC product.

I just finished watching "Jack of All Trades" movie, it's a good watch.

I'm not sure if it's intended as a documentary or mockumentary, but it's entertaining if you like sports cards.

are box breaks from Ebay really worth it? it sounds like some people have had a lot of success with them. I've never tried & not sure how it really works... you just bid to receive cards pulled from a specific team right?

Gambling. You can do them a number of ways, picking by team, random team, or a hit slot - where the hits are given out in order of who has what slot - are the most common.

Although if you are able to predict what cards will go up in the future, you can make some absolute steals. For example, before Heiskanen broke out, the Dallas spots in his rookie year were dirt cheap. I only went in on a few Series 1 breaks, but got a bunch of his Young Guns for dirt cheap from these ebay breaks.

Crazy.

I've never seen any more than the back card of a gum pack ruined. To leak through onto multiple cards, my guess is there would need to be some kind of storage issue. You would need higher levels of moisture causing the gum to slowly melt and leak onto the other cards. It's far more typical for the gum to dry up and stick firmly to the last card in the pack.

Topps was a candy/gum manufacturer. O Pee Chee was a confectioner in Canada who wanted to get involved in hockey cards to move gum so they asked Topps to provide the cards. That's why the cards look so similar, OPC cards are just bilingual versions of Topps cards, made by Topps for OPC.
But the gum is made by OPC. Topps cards, the gum is made by Topps.

For laughs, open some 1981 Donruss baseball. Not only does the gum bleed well into the middle of the pack of cards, the colors of the cards leech back into the gum, turning it 12 different colors.
