I just brought my childhood hockey cards (mostly 1972-1976 but also a smattering from the years after that) from my parents' place in Winnipeg out to where I live now. I haven't looked at these in a decade or two. Is a 1980 Wayne Gretzky 2nd team all-star card (#87) worth anything? What about Wayne Gretzky 1980-81 Scoring Leader (#384)? Where is the best place to find out what they're worth? I don't know about grading but they look fresh out of the package to my eye.

Unfortunately the era that I collected didn't have much going on, so there don't seem to me to be any cards there that would be of massive value, which is generally confirmed by what I've seen on eBay over the years. We never thought of the cards as anything but junk to trade at recess and make card houses with, so they're not all in the greatest condition either.

What about WHA cards? I have quite a few of those for a couple of the seasons. They weren't very widely distributed - even the ones that came out as part of the general NHL series prior to the first season (72-73) didn't seem to be common at the time.

What about the Team Canada '72 series cards?

Do people collect the OPC Canadian Major League Baseball cards? I have a few hundred of those from the same era although no kids I knew ever traded or cared much about them.

Thanks in advance for any answers to my undoubtedly naïve questions about hockey cards.

Beckett magazine will show you the current values, or can check ebay to see what theyre going for as well. Grading makes a big difference.... Your Gretzky cards Im guessing are worth around $10 each?

I've been collecting the newer hockey cards for about the past 6-7 years, but now I need money for something else. So I'm looking to sell a bunch of my cards.

Again I've only collected some of the newer cards and I'm not a huge collector so I just get a box or two from the store every once in a while.

I know that these cards aren't going to be worth much, but I would appreciate if someone could tell me what their worth or where to look, because when I look on ebay, the prices vary.

Maybe $10 all together, unless there is a few worth more?

I really appreciate any feedback you guys have, even if it's just a place to find prices. I can post pictures if you need to see them.

Thanks:)

Moving this week and just found a bunch of cards from late 80's through the 90's. Bure, Selanne, Jagr, rookies and many more. Too bad hockey cards aren't worth what other sports cards are.

I know, it sucks. I've been collecting for a few years and buying the $20 boxes in the stores, and just realized that you can buy like 100 cards for a few bucks online.

It's because they make so many cards, but there is not a whole lot of collectors. Whenever I'm in Walmart or Target, there's like 15 boxes sitting on the shelf (and I'm sure that's because they're not selling)

Lol what?

Hockey cards are worth quite alot. There just isnt a market outside of the hard core fan.

Trading cards are a racket like the lottery. If you go in with the intention of collecting, your good. To make money, not so much.

That being said, if your trying to make money, you need money. Your not gonna pad your bank account from $20 blaster boxes from Wal-Mart, this year with McD being the exception and even now hes trending lower because the autographed rookies are starting to come out.

I gave (guessing) between 30 and 50,000 commons (between a dozen and 15 of the 3200 count boxes) to Goodwill...

Tax write-off was worth more than the $$ I could have sold them for (especially if you factor in the aggravation!)

I had been using them for kindling in the ol' fire pit. (literally)

Wonder if I can do that in Canada? How did you price the tax receipt per card?

Outside of enjoying the thrill of gambling, boxes make no sense to me.

You need to hit a card whose odds are completely against you to "come ahead" on a blaster or box. If you collect specific stuff, it makes sense to just hit up eBay/the secondary market and grab what you want.

Look at McDavid this year. Right now, he's a 200 card. What are the odds of pulling him? If you want a McD it makes more sense just to buy him outright.

Depends...If you can get blasters for around $20 and want other rookies and willing to put time into selling other stuff/duplicates, it does make more sense to buy the boxes. Plus the actual act of opening cards is fun, although a comparable enjoyment to gambling.

You're right though, if you want a card, and that's all you want, it absolutely always just makes sense to buy it outright.

Honestly it depends on what you have.

Insert cards from the 90s are finally appreciating in value because for some of them, theres not many out there. Plus, alot of people just threw the stuff out after the huge card boom knowing there was tons of product. Regular base cards will always be affordable, but those cards that came one every 200 packs that had a 20 card checklist, those are starting to look good. Especially if they are numbered.

Blankall could probably give a better opinion, but mine is late 80s Topps cards, from 85 to 87, three years, are severely under rated price wise. They might be the only years they were less produced then OPC as Topps just produced to fill order and this was right before the huge card boom. Good Topps rookies from those years will command good money soon, imo.

There are definitely a few cards in the 85-87 series that will be descent investments going forward. You have Roy and Lemieux rookies. Those cards aren't super rare, but demand is always high. Hockey quickly gets pretty worthless after that though and doesn't pick up again until they start short printing rookies.

I was unaware of that Topps issue. Makes me wish I'd stocked up on Lemieux rookies when the US dollar was low.

I feel really cheated by those epacks...I bought 10 boxes of series 1 hobby this year. Found out 4 months later that a large portion of the hits were held back for the e cards.

Decided to pass on series 2 hobby because of the same issue.

Until Upper Deck makes a separate hobby product for those e packs, I'll largely be sticking. to retail that I find on sale.

Every card company holds cards back. Like panini or Topps does with their redemption replacements. I'm pretty sure the odds are still the same so I don't see a reason to feel cheated.
