My buddy finally got a Laine last week after busting countless blasters. Two Marners is pretty sweet, though. He's an absolute treat to watch, so it's a shame his value seems to have dipped a little bit.

Those e-Packs can be a slippery slope since they're just so convenient. I got put off a bit by them after getting a Clear Cut Superstars Kopitar that came damaged in the mail.

On no....Did you ship in top loaders? I've heard the condition on the cards is great if you use the top loaders.

I actually had a pretty great time with E-Pack. Bought about 3 boxes worth. Rainbow foiled all 6 Flames cards, which was fun. Also managed to get the other 25 or so YGs I needed to fill out my YGs set and pulled another Matthews. Managed to turn 3 boxes into about 35 YGs so far by trading off the other inserts.

Anybody know anything about the purple SPGU parallels? I think they are epack exclusive because I don't recall seeing any on eBay prior to SPGU going to ePack.

Missed out on grabbing a Chabot, and they've seemed to "dry up" on COMC. Prices are all over the place. Based on how few are out there on COMC compared to the /399 versions of the rookies and such, I am guessing they must be pretty short printed. But they aren't numbered. Maybe it is just that people aren't buying much SPGU on ePack due to it being higher end than your typical ePack fare which is why less of the purple parallels seem to be popping up on COMC.

I tried googling around but couldn't find much info. Anyone know more about these inserts?

Got some cards graded. No homeruns in this batch. Should have spent less time playing with them.

Sorry to revive this thread from the dead but I figure it was better this than create a new thread.

I want to collect all of the Leaf Rookies from this year's rookie cards. I don't want anything fancy so I figured the Upper Deck Young Guns is fine. Don't care about jerseys or autographs or patches or whatever.

So I bought most of them off ebay for like $2 per card. Probably overpaid but it's just for my own collection so I don't care.

The guys I'm balking at are Matthews/Marner/Nylander (of course). Should I wait to buy them to get a better price or should I pull the trigger now? This is not for investing purposes or anything, I just wanna nice yearbook to remember this season by and those prices are kinda high.

I don't wanna buy entire boxes and go through 40 packs just for one or two cards so that is not an option.

The singles should cost you total around $300. I have a feeling Nylander will go down but the other two guys may go up a bit.

Marner and Matthews will not be going down anytime soon, this is probably going to be the average price for them where they are right now. If you wait too long you risk them getting hot next season and prices going up.

Last Summer you could get McDavid YG's for 140ish USD, now you're talking at least $225+ at the moment. I sold 2 last summer at $160 USD  .

Matthews and Marner if they fall won't fall much but can always go up big if they go up (look @ McDavid).

yep... I sold my raw mcdavid young gun for $350 US in like an hour after listing it... but generally that kind of price inflation is not going to exist for most players. Crosby has been selling for over $500, but then you look away from the generational guys to the elite guys like Tavares, Seguin, Stamkos (admittedly these guys are all hurt by the teams they play for but still) and they are all well under $100. Even Ovechkin can be had for under $200.

i would bet that Marner and Nylander both stabilize/sink, and if they stagnate in their sophomore seasons then definitely the latter. Matthews will probably remain strong but it will heavily depend on his play and whether the Leafs can trend towards playoffs again.

LOL I just did.

I'm guessing McDavid is the price he is because he's considered the next best player in hockey and I'm assuming that the Leafs Big 3 suffer from the Leafs Tax right? Because there was some really curious ones there - an Ovechkin Young Guns from 2005-06 goes for only $200-250 which I thought was low for one of the best goal scorers of his generation while Crosby Young Guns go for $1000+. Is their a specific reason for the disparity in prices?

Hey just want to chime in. As a long time card collector starting out in the 90's I would just like to warn you guys. If you want to drop the cash because its fun that is one thing but don't expect these cards to appreciate. With card sealing sleeves, overproduction, ebay, and so many collectors now these cards are never going to increase in value from these prices. I wouldn't spend $200+ dollars on any card produced in the last few years as an investment. If you just want to have it that's a whole different thing.

Marner and Nylander will almost definitely lose value over the next year or two, Matthews on the other hand will probably maintain its value, he's a highly touted, first overall drafted by the leafs, who's going to win the calder. In all honesty I cant see the value of the card getting much higher than it is right now. I dont think you'll regret it if you wait for some of the hype to die down, another year and everyone will be after the next rookie crop.

Glad you said that about Marner. The Marner card prices are ridonkulous. I'm picked up a Nylander for $35. I'm okay with that even if I overpaid by a little bit. The Marner prices are almost $100 despite him showing the same amount of potential as Nylander. Is that the Canadian tax?

Its more because the cards havent been out for that long, with the exception of guys like crosby and mcdavid, almost all young guns will drop in price following the release. Of course when those players play for teans like the leafs, theres going to be more interest therefore higher prices, but they'll come back down to earth. I would assume the matthews ends up between 100-150, while marner drops under $50 and the nylander around $20-25.

I cringe at the amount of money I spent on cards as a kid. Somehow I ended up watching some "box break" videos on YouTube with people opening up packs of cards yesterday and I thought it was insane how much this stuff costs nowadays.

Something like $200 for a Black Diamond box where there are like four packs and four cards in each pack. Yikes

Cool. I don't feel too bad then, I ended up finding a Matthews card for $170+shipping, Nylander I got for $35 and I guess I'll wait for Marner since his cards are all going for $80+.

I also went down this YouTube rabbit hole of watching people open pack after pack of cards and I realized just how rare it these cards are. The craziest product I saw was the Upper Deck The Cup. One box, one pack. $700 MSRP!

Crazy. Didn't know card collecting got nuts.

Did anyone here complete the Upper Deck SP Authentic Bounty achievement for the spectrum parallels?

I hit a level 3 werenski from a case break and I sold the code on ebay for $215!

I wanted to sell it as soon as I got it when they were selling for $50-$80 but breaks take notoriously long to ship so I listed it yesterday as a Buy it Now and it sold instantly since there were only a handful of the /50 achievement sets left and have since all been redeemed.

Just wondering how you were able to snag them all if you got the bounty. Waaaay to rich for my blood. If one card sold for $215, how much would that set be worth? :amazed:

This isn't true any longer. 90s cards and modern Young Guns are two totally different stories. If you look at Young Guns from bigger stars like Price, P. Kane, Crosby, etc.. that are about 10 years old, they are increasing in value.

The trend seems to be the cards are hot when produced, then drop, then rise if the player becomes a star. There's definitely still risk, particularly if a player starts to falter or gets traded to a lesser market. For example Eric Staal's Young Guns card has not held value. For star players, however, although they print a fair number of Young Guns (nothing even close to the 90s though), over time the cards end up holed away in people's collections. So the cards become scare over time. When the players get hot, demand goes up.

For example, my E. Karlsson Young Guns have doubled in price since the playoffs started. He cemented himself as a bonafide league wide star and his cards went up in value.

I've got the Pro Set (I want to say 90-91 anyway the year after the Oilers one the cup. My Dad told me as a kid to save them up as "one day they would be worth something"

Last Beckett I read that set was going for only $25

I've been gunning for Young Guns and buying series one 13-14 tins.

Two I bought today were Dupilcates: Huberdeau, Dumba, Lessio.

That's four Dumbas now.

Speaking as an avid Young Guns collector (I have every card of every set since 2011-12. except for the checklists. I don't see a need for them) If you're looking to collect and want variety I'd suggest to hunt for the sets on ebay. You'd probably get more for your buck on a per card basis. Unless of course you're after value. In that case ebay would no doubt rip you off.

Yup. Collecting cards pre 90s was super cheap and you could get lots of gems. 90s was cheap too, but all you get is garbage due to overproduction. Collecting cards nowadays (more like flipping cards) is too pricey. A single tin of 15-16 The Cup now costs you over $1 k and you might only get $60 of value in that tin. If you don't hit a McDavid, you are guaranteed to lose money.

I have friends who did pull rare McJesus Cup cards. The highest ones sold for $40 k and $30 k each. Those are down payment prices for houses/apartments or you could buy a pretty nice car with that type of dough.

The higher end of the hobby aimed at gamblers is very expensive but if you just want to collect cards for fun, they are dirt cheap to buy on the secondary market. You can buy autographs of 90 percent of NHLers for under 5 USD. Most Young Guns rookie cards are pretty cheap.

There are some exceptions, but mostly sealed packs and boxes aren't really price in line with the market for cards. It's a buyer's market for singles cards.

The hobby is at the point where someone could limit themselves to spending 20 USD a month of single cards, and build up a pretty fun collection of autos/jerseys/rookies.
