Yeah, but what's the next best option?
There really isn't another option.

BGS just killed their company with the whole grade change crap. Like, they're never going to come back from that.

BGS was the standard from around 2007 to 2009, right before the Trout cards came out. By 2011, nobody was paying anything remotely close to what PSA cards were bringing in a BGS slab no matter what Beckett's site was saying. You aren't putting a key vintage in a BGS slab if it's high grade.

Opc Gretzky rookie PSA 8 just sold for 10k. Two years ago one sold for 30k. Prices are going to continue to fall at least for another year before things straighten out.

You hold right now unless you really need money. The pandemic brought around new card shops to the surrounding area and all of them are gone. Two were "robbed" before they were closed down which is odd considering an awful lot of card shops now get "robbed" before closing.

Once the NHL season is over, buy

I remember being 3 and taking my tricycle to the store and using my $2 allowance for a pack n a chocolate bar or bag of chips.

Pulling anyone but Rob Ramage made me happy lol... ill never forget the 80's, times have certainly changed

SGC in my opinion. When it comes to fair and consistent grading they’re probably the best of all the companies to be honest. Resale isn’t at PSA’s level but the growth in market share they have achieved in the last few years has been well deserved.

BGS is a complete joke now. They’ve let the hobby pass them by entirely and when they try to make a drastic change to stop the bleeding it blows up on their face hilariously. They tried to make changes to their labels and the backlash was so intense they had to backtrack. If that wasn’t embarrassing enough they just did it again by trying to change their grading scale and had to once again roll it back to go back to the drawing board. They’re firmly in 4th place behind PSA, SGC, and CSG in terms of monthly grading volume and if there was anyone else doing a half decent job they might even be 5th right now. Hell maybe TAG grading will even pass them in short order.

BGS is that old mom and pop general store in your neighborhood that doesn’t even have a debit machine yet.

Whoever comes play this end of the season? Hopefully we can see some more rookies from NCAA come into the league for the playoffs or end of season stint?
I don't know if there will be enough quality to justify breakinh cases of either unless a few of the draftees break camp with the team.

Granted, it's UD and lord's knows when the product is actually coming out so they give themselves a pretty decent window, but come on.

This might be the last stacked group of YGs we see in awhile.

I never understood why ITG never had more traction? I never realized until recently that the man responsible is still involved but producing 1 of 1 cards and such. I was actually talking to him not long ago because I have some autographs I thought he might like to have for cards (Hap Day, King Clancy, Ballard, Howe and a whole slew of others)
Dr. Price.

Makes some cool cards, but the new brand name and look is very so-so. President's Choice is the brand name (also a food brand in Canada which makes it awkward), and to get around copyright, a lot of artist's rendering cards. I look at the website every now and then, but haven't purchased anything. I love the 1 of 1/s but I can't get past the brand name and font.

I will be doing this one time and one time only.

I got clearance from the big shots here to link my Livestream and will be having my annual draft primer stream opening up 12 cases of The Cup from multiple years.

All the big shots in this thread are more then welcome to join in and get first dips on the Lanny McDonald autos I pull.

Didn't a sgc graded 52 Mantle sell at 12 million? I don't know how much more that sells for in a PSA holder.

Sgc is moving up fast. They knocked it out the park during the pandemic and have been riding that wave. And this is coming from someone who is pro PSA

I don’t mind Petey’s auto. You can at least make out “Elias P 40”. Most other young players have little to no penmanship anymore. There are some really horrific sigs nowadays. Tim Stutzle signed nice autos on his earlier rookie cards but his most recent Cup autographs are quick “TS” squiggle. Lucas Raymond had some laughably bad ones early on too. His actually got a little better since, UD must have talked to him about it.

Alexis lafreniere is absolutely terrible altho he writes out his full name. It just looks shakey, personally i do like his in person auto AL13

There's "rumors" that the delays are pissing off players and that there's a huge issue with photo quality and that they don't like the photos UD is choosing.

I guess one photo was used in S1 that was a three year old photo and it grinded some players gears.

I watched a video of pack openings and there certainly was an old photo like 3 years old of a player mentioned by the YouTuber. Once again alexis lafreniere, that stock young guns and his canvas card were atrocious. Those photos were also recycled on other cards from his rookie year. If i noticed it here im sure they did it with other players

Young Guns are pretty overrated IMO. I’ve got exactly one in my PC and it’s a Sidney Crosby. They printed WAY less back then than they do now. McDavid’s print run is many multiples higher than Sid’s.

People keep sleeping on the Ultimate Rookies Auto RC.

Those Ultimate rookie are generally a really nice design

After two days of getting dogwalked on social media, Beckett announced that their grading scale changes are going to be reconsidered with another announcement next week.

What a circus that company is- but the negativity was loud enough for it to be impossible to ignore.

View attachment 679808

The real problem is with their grading scale many gem mint cards would be down graded. Personally i would be fine with becketts changes as long as all finished graded cards are grandfathered in as 10s no matter the sub grades. I also think quad 9.5s should be a 10 in the future.

Yup.

Name brand confuses me for the same reason. Not 100% sure what to make of it. He has some cool cards though they don’t carry much market value. May be more suited for someone like me who is in it for collecting, not investing.

Yeah, I think it was a SGC 9.5 which is an absurd grade for that card. For comparison there are only three PSA 10’s and six 9’s. That SGC copy was one of the best copies in existence, probably top three as some say it’s nicer than at least one of the 10’s.

PSA 10 copies haven’t sold publicly in decades and likely never will as the owners have diamond hands. One owner basically said he would be buried with it. If one was to go up for public auction though it would probably be a $30-million card. No joke.

Last PSA 9 I recall selling was a private sale for $5 million. That was a couple of years ago.

What is everyone’s thoughts on the new SP Legends All-Time Future Watch Auto cards? As a 90’s baby I grew up on guys like Modano, Belfour, Sakic, Forsberg, etc and these cards are very nice. They are already going for a decent amount and I’m just wondering if they will have staying power in value or they just a novelty whose price will fall over time instead of appreciate.

I love them as well and have already picked up the Temmu Selanne /49 for $500 and the Dale Hawechuk /99 (sticker auto) for $225. I sure hope the prices rise on them or at the very least stay stable as I am having a hard time determining if I overpaid or not. They are for my PC anyways so not really a huge deal if I did, although I would of course love hearing that I did well on the cost.

In my opinion, if they limit the series to a one off they will steadily increase over time, but if they decide to run them every year or two the appeal to collectors will wear off.

I never even considered the rarity of the 52 PSA 10. With the current state of the industry right now, 30 million probably isn't happening outside a Heritage shilled auction. Yes it's vintage and yes it's rare, it's just all the pandemic collectors don't have that much to invest or to even put bids on something of that magnitude and the others who actually have the deep pockets and want to own a piece of cardboard can be counted on two hands.

I think the owner of the Rockies has a PSA 10 and shows it off behind glass and even then, only the hardcore card collector is gonna take a selfie with it.

Those guys have signed so much they will fall.

It's a fantastic looking set tho

I went ahead and bought a couple of Wyatt Johnston Young Guns, but I might see what I can pull from a box or two as well when I have the money. I paid $30 for each of those, but I'd rather have them now than wait and watch them hit triple digits if he has the impact that a lot of Stars fans hope he does.

The card my father traded for bottles (which he also collected). No idea what his would have graded but it doesn't really matter.
