Hockey Cards - Part III

Shoulda got one game in
Sounds like a nice card to be receiving especially now compared to when you redeemed it. Since im new to the card game i cant fathom the idea of redemption cards, what a terrible idea.

They always had redemption cards going back to at least the 80s, if not earlier. Then you had the bizarre choice like UD Choice where the redemption card was part of the regular set, but redeemable for a different version (in this instance, the card had a date on it and if they scored, the card was a winner).

How many people have the low end cards on their wish list ?

Lots will. You can combine many of the lowest end cards into foil and rainbow versions of those cards. That's another bonus to E-Pack. The base has value. Every year I collect the Flames foil and Rainbow foil versions of the base cards. They look great in person.

If you want to put the time in, you can slowly work your way up with your base cards. Combine them, then trade those foil cards for lower end physical cards, and go up from there.

Getting back my latest PSA sub back today. 122 cards. Pretty pumped.

Edit:

Just got the grades back. Pretty solid. 73 10s, 54 9s, 4 8s and 1 6. Only 2 of 5 Robertsons were a 10, which is disappointing, otherwise lots of great grades in there.

On this website, there is a list of cards and probability, you will find some parallel cards.
But i dont full understand that.
Here is a example:

Base High Series SP (#201-250)
Base Short Print - 1:2 packs
Ice Battles - 1:5 packs
Silver Script - 1:20 packs
Magenta Auto - 1:400 packs
Super Script - #/25
Black Super Script - #/5
Printing Plates - 1/1

What does it mean?

IIRC they have a different picture on them, and are printed less than the basic version.

How many cards did you submit? If you only a few your probably better off finding a store that does group submissions. Mine worked out to about $21.60 Cad/card

The first 4 things listed is the average across the entire print run, but it doesn’t mean that you’ll get that. Like say if you buy a box, and it contains 20 packs. The odds say that you’ll get 10 base short print, 4 Ice Battles, and 1 Silver Script in that box. In reality, it can vary and you can get more of each one, or less of each one, per box.

The last three, that means there’s that many cards available, so 25 of one, 5 of the other. Those cards are numbered 1-25, or 1-5. Those will be randomly in packs of cards, and the odds of getting those are really high (for example, the Super Script is 1 out of every 5000 packs, Black Super Script 1 out of every 15,000 packs).

The very last one is the actual metal plates they used to make the card, and there’s only one of those available.

I think its over the number of cards i submitted. I live near BGS and i like their slabs the best by far. I could certainly submit more cards for a lesser per card fee however i generally buy already slabbed cards and occasionally single cards but never packs/boxes/blasters

What i might have to do is buy a bunch of singles submit them and sell the excess to get the cards i want.

That's what a lot do. Buy raw cards and then sub them.

Or buy cards of one company, Crack them and sub them to another company.

So, you buy a card from MNT and sub it somewhere else because MNT seems like it's the hardest on grading

After my Kucherov incident in 2013 I now hold Young Guns with any potential for 5 yrs. I was on the cusp of selling a bunch of my 2017-18 guys the start of last year but waited it out and good thing I did because Tage Thompson who was going for 99 cents a few years ago all a sudden is $100+ now I think. I remember I kept getting upset that I was pulling him and not Boeser that year. Boy have things changed.
But honestly, when Kucherov's career is over, where will he sit in NHL all time players? TBH, not even a mention. Look at Ron Francis, rookie card is of low value. Stick with pre-1980 cards, they are proven.

On top of that the high graded modern cards are extremely common compared to high graded vintage.

$800 CAD for a PSA 9 Bossy rookie (Topps). That card is way less common and Bossy has way more pedigree than most common stars do. IMO you'll see most modern players cards drop big in value over time. Exceptions will be McDavid, Crosby, and Ovechkin. Even then I don't think their young guns will hold the value they have now. Just too many of them out there.

I dont get why a henrik lundqvist rookie and future watch are both cheaper then an alexis lafreniere future watch and young guns. Even tho there is less cards and high grade cards of players pre 1990 those still seem cheaper then unproven players that are young.

I really dont get why the young guns card is so popular. Aside from any auto cards i would think sp games used, extreme rookies or trilogy would be higher as they are all numbered to 999

I like young guns. Part of it is just tradition. They are the rookie inserts in the biggest hockey set. Plus they are common enough that they are collectable and attainable.

I just think it's ridiculous to pay $5k+ for a McDavid PSA 10 yg, when they are so common.
