Where should I start if I’m going to start collecting some cards from scratch?

Is it packs, bundles, what type of cards??

Maybe a good site to buy them also???

First thing to do is have a goal in mind about what you want to collect. I am not a serious collector as i used to collect baseball cards as a kid but you cant get a full league set with all players including rookies so i buy exactly what i want so i dont end up with a bunch of random useless worthless cards.

My personal goal is just rangers rookie cards and some of my favorite players. For me i also prefer graded cards because they get encased in a slab which is helpful for making sure the cards do NOT get damaged. I buy already graded cards of the players i like because i dont want to spend thousands of dollars trying to get the one or two cards i want.

I've done all my purchases on ebay however i havent bought much. I cosign the COMC recommendations.

I strongly recommend watching some videos of card pack opening videos so you can see what kind of stuff you can expect. Dont get excited by the videos w big hits because the odds are so low watch for the other stuff that comes in the boxes.

Just curious: Why are Rookie cards so valuable?

Why not Superstars like Oveckin now? Or Crosby? MacKinnon...?

Rookie cards of Ovechkin are for one year. regular cards of Ovechkin are for 15+ years.

In modern times, they often Short Print rookie cards now as compared to base common cards.

Will he be included in first batch? Looking to this year edition, they are somehow reluctant to throw there prospects from NHL draft 2022.

They always put the big rookie into series 1. With Lafreniere, they even had to photoshop a weird photo of him for his Young Guns card. If there is a secondary, big but not as big, rookie, they'll typically save him for series 2.

Series 1 is the marquee product that sells the most and is produced in the most volume. The big rookie is going int there.

Without a doubt Bedard will be in Series 1.

The regular lafreniere young guns and his canvas are such ugly cards.

I bought a 10 young guns variation last season. Much better looking card

With Bedard's cards probably starting at insane prices from day 1 it'll be interesting to see how the price fluctuates in the future.

Personally I can't see how this is going to end well for "investors". A higher starting price means there is a lower margin of profit from future price increases. There is probably an upper limit to what people are prepared to spend on these cards and the market is trending down, and there will probably be many thousands of them available online.

If Bedard actually does have a generational type career, the price will go up. From an investment point of view, you are obviously much better off finding the next Jason Robertson though.

After my Kucherov incident in 2013 I now hold Young Guns with any potential for 5 yrs. I was on the cusp of selling a bunch of my 2017-18 guys the start of last year but waited it out and good thing I did because Tage Thompson who was going for 99 cents a few years ago all a sudden is $100+ now I think. I remember I kept getting upset that I was pulling him and not Boeser that year. Boy have things changed.

Exactly...I do the same. Although now I'm going to wait even longer than 5 years. Koneckny, for example, is 2016/17, and up until this year looked like a pretty mediocre player.

Anyone know where I can find a checklist for a player of all his cards? HockeyDB doesn't seem to be up to date regarding sports cards.
Thanks

I really hope Bedard signs with Upper deck. It sucks when they don’t amd you cannot get any autographed cards etc .
I am not 100% certain how it works , but i think he has to agree with the NHLPA and or NHL to use his likeness or im not sure if they can even use his picture wearing a teams jersey for their cards? Nico Hischier , Eichel l didn’t sign originally with Upper Deck so in the first year of their rookie cards , Upper Deck did not have any of their cards autographed . I’ve seen some other sports where they cannot use teams logos / jerseys I’m the players pictures . Not sure if that is a licensingagreememt with the league and Upper Deck or if it can be specifically with
just the athlete ?? I’m not sure but hope it’s all figured out so Upper deck has Bedards rookies like normal .
