S2 is SUBSTANTIALLY better in terms of condition compared to S1. Minimal edge issues. Also, Seider and Podkolzin seem to be like the McDavid and Kenins coalitions.

If you look at the fine print on the backs of the cards S1 was printed in the USA and S2 was printed in Italy.

We had heard they were looking at printing partners in Europe because they were getting squeezed out for capacity stateside and it looks like they found a competent partner overseas. The cards are pretty good quality and you’ll notice little differences in things like the foil packs themselves and the serial numbering on the cards being a different style/font.

The fact it was printed in Italy makes me think they used whoever printed Panini’s stickers for years.

Anyone with the knowledge feel like posting a general tier list of projected player/card value of the Young Guns?

I'm pulling a bunch but not familiar with everyone, probably overlooking some guys.

Do you guys think this list is accurate?

Nah Raymond and Seider should be in their own tier in tier 1 followed by Byfield then everyone else.

I got Neighbours, Seider and Steen in mine. Also Mercer and Newhook are definitely together.
I can attest to that. I pulled both of them in the one hobby box I opened. Only other card worth mentioning was a Sampo Ranta YG clear cut, which I suppose isnt the worst case, but would of preferred better obviously.

Does Upper Deck ever set their prices based on how strong or weak the rookie crop is?

For example, will they jack up the price more than usual when the eventual Connor Bedard Young Guns comes out? Will we see $400 hobby boxes on opening day at the stores because there's a potentially generational Young Guns in there, and then the prices will be back down for the next series? Just curious how they handle that.

No but they might be inclined to raise the prices again if we keep buying. I gave up on Upper Deck after seeing their astronomical rise. Gave in this year because I wanted Seider and Raymond but unless there is another hot Wings rookie card I have no reason to keep buying at these prices. Upper Deck may be tempted to bump the prices again. If people keep buying they have no reason not to until more people throw in the towel.

They've jacked up prices slightly when there is lots of demand. It's like $10-15 though, not $200+. When McDavid was a rookie prices went up slightly. This last year with Laf prices went to again.

I understand this is a bit OT, but what can you feasibly do with a card collection?

my parents discovered a bin in the basement that had my hockey cards that I collected from 2001-2009ish, and Pokémon cards.

it’s sad to say, but are they essentially a ‘paperweight’? Or will card collecting/trading/selling ever experience a boom?

If anything, it’s best to research what your have. EBay is an excellent tool if you search sold listings and the number of bids. Depending on what you have, there could be specific sets or cards that have good value. Even Victory rookies (among Upper Deck’s cheapest rookie cards) many top players have value. Crosby and Ovechkin rookie year cards (2005-06) are in demand and are valuable, as well as other years. Overall, it’s best to go on eBay and look stuff up. If you have 2001 and 2002 Upper Deck Young Guns, there are some rare ones (and errors?) that sell extremely well, even for no name players. I’m not as familiar with those myself though as those were when I was on a collecting hiatus.

I hardly know anything about Pokémon but there are valuable cards, especially from certain print runs, which you can tell some some of the markings on the cards (from my understanding).

Young Guns are all drafted players , correct ?
Young Guns always feature the player in their NHL jersey. The deal is also with the NHL/NHLPA, so if a player was undrafted, they couldn't be included in a set that features only NHL players.

The NHLPA also has a rule that no player can be featured on an NHL card until they have actually played an NHL game:

The NHLPA has a rule that no player can be featured on a trading card until they have a played in an official NHL® game, which leaves Upper Deck just shy of five weeks to get the company’s most popular rookie cards, known as the “Young Guns,” created.

Series 1 doesn't come out until after the season starts, and they have to quickly get all the rookies onto cards. They can obviously cheat a bit, as it's typically obvious with big rookies who will start the season or not.

It's honestly f***ing insane, and you get junk for what you pay now. SP Authentic used to cost $120-$140 for a box with 3 autographs on release, it's mind boggling to me that it's now $400 a box for essentially two autographs.

That applies for skaters; for goalies, they only have to dress for the game, so a back-up who never plays a minute can get a card.

Should have opted for a case or 5 when 15-16 S1 came out. Those prices opening week were fire sale prices compared to some of the product today.

Lol. At the time everyone was complaining. The smart move would have been to stock up on McDavid YGs for $200 CAD each and then get them graded by PSA for $9 each.... One guy also spent six figures buying the cup and everyone on the forums was baffled. I think we were shell shocked by the fact it was going for like $500 Cad a box....

Ovy PSA graded YGs also dipped to about $90 cad around then.

My best buy was probably a psa 9 second year Gretzky I got for $300? Maybe the 78/79 Topps set I bought for $30. Had the Bossy rookie graded and it came back a psa 9.
