Not surprised, that’s a 1,000 dollar card in 10 years !
I’d be cautious. Scoring defencemen are commonly treated like they’re the “flavour of the week” in the hobby, and generally don’t hold the high values like star goalies and forwards. They need to be scoring and hopefully the demand/hype is there in 5-10 years.

Drew Doughty is a great example. Had high demand while winning Stanley Cups and Olympic gold medals (nowhere near values of rookies these days). With all of his success and personal production, his values would be higher if he were a goalie or forward.

Having said that, maybe Makar will have consistent high demand of guys like Lidstrom and Bourque - there was always high demand for both players (not specifically rookies). So far we haven’t had a dman (that I recall) in this era of hockey cards that has been able to maintain demand and their card values. Maybe Hedman to an extent? I certainly wouldn’t rule it out with Makar but I would remain cautious.

Personally, I bought a bunch of Makar and Fox stuff in their rookie year at great prices (I like to prospect), and now that values have gone up, I’ve been slowly piecing them out because I held too long on guys like Doughty, Letang, and Rielly.

I must say, it makes me laugh seeing Pro Set on store shelves over 30 years later.

Just such a crappy, crappy, crappily produced set. Tons of spelling mistakes, wrong people on cards etc. It was almost more rare to get a card that was correct.

All sarcasm aside, how is that even possible? Did they find some 5 year old in New Mexico and say "here, make a set" then just run with it?

Oldies, but faves from my PC. Haven't done much collecting in the past few years, but do have two McDavid YG's out for grading, as well as a Lafreniere Clear Cut YG. Got my Matthews SPA FW back awhile ago with a 9.5.

Prices really have gone insane. I probably should look at unloading some stuff.

What do you guys think? Any value here or should I just play poker with them? A '95-96 set of NHL All stars by Bicycle. I posted the checklist and a few cards

I have the same set, yours is from 95-96, they were made for several (three?) seasons. I don't think that they are all that rare, so just keep playing :)
Yeah i was just on Google. Looks like a $10 pack

I stole the Roy card out for my collection back in 96 . The rest can sit for another 25 years

I had these. I never played with them and instead put them in my collection. Which is long gone.

@Bondurant did you get the Tim’s cards I sent you yet?

There's an antique store nearby that has a few shelfs of cards, including a few boxes of Pro Set. The thing is they are selling them for like $50 a box, and I feel bad that someone is going to pay that not knowing what they are doing.

This is a really vague question but would a Hasek collection from the nineties be worth something today? If I recall correctly I only have his cards in Sabres uniform (that is, pre-Detroit). Something like 150-200 different cards, all in good shape (not going to use the specific terms for condition in this instance as I'm not thoroughly familiar with them and I don't have the collection right in front of me right now). Granted, I'm not sure I had many especially valuable ones back then but I have no idea how Hasek is valued in the community in the 2020s.

Not likely. Unless you have some of the rare cards that would have came out in the late 90s, like 98, 99 jersey cards. A Roy one sold for 2000 bucks

I remember so many of us scooping up countless packs of these back in the day.

My brother and I also have a bunch of early 90s cards. The collection is in pretty good condition. Beckett indicates which the best rookie cards are for a certain player--i.e. which set(s). Then, if one has some cash set aside, one can grade a bunch and some of them might come back with high ratings--through BGS or some such grading service. Then, with an Ebay.com account one can sell those that received high grades for some decent money back. It's hard to say if this is worth it or not. For some, the process might make it so.

At least it’s Hasek. He will at least have some demand over a bunch of other goalies. Like someone already said, many many not have much value but here’s a few suggestions:

I’d suggest searching eBay and sold listings on some of the ones you think are more valuable/rarer.

COMC is a site I would use for research in this case. If you search cards, you’ll see prices cards are currently listed for (note anyone can set their own asking price… some will be outrageous) and recent sales history by quarter. For card history, there is a bar graph by quarter and you can hover the mouse over each quarter over the last 2-3 years to see how many sold. With COMC I’d suggest using them for some research only and not listing 90s stuff.

Another idea is to check out sites like Sports Card Forum (SCF) or Hobby Insider. You can even take some pictures and ask for feedback. Personally, I’d lean towards SCF as HI is a little more old boys club, and SCF is a lot busier. Both have some great people.

Even for the cards that aren’t worth a lot, you still have them to enjoy in your collection. The 90s had some great designs too.

Series 1 has a set release date of Feb 2nd. Still no checklist though. Not much hype of this year since the top two picks went back to college and Caufield not exactly having a great year.

There’s still lots of rookies who could be in there that people would chase.

Zegras, Raymond, Seider, Drysdale, Turcotte, Podkolzin, Lundell, Perfetti, Newhook, Mercer, Byfield, Knight, ULP, Swayman

Much gratitude to @MarkusKetterer for sending Tim's Team Canada cards my way. USPS decided to skip my building yesterday but they did not neglect us today! Cards have arrived. Aiming to open them this weekend and will report any hits...or just list the commons which would be much less dramatic. Just happy to have something to open.

EDIT: No waiting for the weekend. Best hit was the Nathan MacKinnon Timbits to Team Canada.

Anyone hear about the Dallas card show debacle? Man, these fake slabs look so real at first sight/touch. They even register on PSA. This kind of crap is going to ruin the hobby

Video: Security locks down entire premises. Culprit eventually caught and tasered (age-restricted, have to watch on youtube via link):

Normally I'm pretty zen about these things but yesterday was the end date for the auction of a card I really really really wanted on eBay.

This was an autographed vintage card for a deceased player. The card was in ok condition but not graded. Normally without the auto it would probably go for 100 USD. With the autograph it wasn't unique, but still really rare. I'd been stalking the listing for 7 days and must have been checking it out every hour during that time. I absolutely wanted to win this, and based on previous examples I thought it would go between 300 and 500 USD, but most likely around 450 USD. My plan was to overbid bet 775 USD a few seconds before the end.

Ten seconds before the end the bidding was at 175 USD... promising. I then make my bid AND SOMEONE BID OVER ME. I panicked and bid 900 USD. The auctions ends. I LOST.

Checking out the auction log, someone else (obviously) bid > 900 USD a few minutes before. The third highest bid was only 175 USD. I was absolutely gutted. Objectively there is no way that card was worth over 1100 CAD. I have several earlier, graded autographed cards of this same player that cost way less than that, but really wanted this one to grow my collection. The winning bidder had previously bid 50 USD and then 90 USD about 12 hours before the auction ended, and then probably over 1000 USD a few minutes before the end. Did he make a mistake? Did he bid 1000$ for a nice round number thinking no one else would go near that? If he did he got a nasty and expensive surprise.

I'm just writing this to better understand myself and to begin the healing process lol. I'm holding out the faint hope that the guy got an unexpected surprise and won't pay and that the card will be relisted in a few weeks. But probably not. Oh well...

If it's just wayyyy about what it's worth then it certainly could be an accident. He mightve been desperate too though, or perhaps it's the seller bidding himself up from another account.

I once accidentally bid a max bid of $1500 or something crazy like that on a $30 card lol. Fortunately didn't get bid up, but still accidents can happen especially if you're rushing at the last second.

Yeah I was discussing how auctions worked with my kids and using this one as an exemple (before it went sour) and one of them said I should bid 10,000 if I really wanted it just to make sure. In retrospect I'm glad I didn't because that would have been a hard pill to swallow. It went at about 2x of the maximum amount I though it would go. And if I wasn't there to bid on it, it would have gone for only 175$, which is quite a bargain. Unless there was a mistake either the guy never though it would go for that price (it wouldn't have except for me) or he's quite rich and 1000$ is nothing to him.

Still, it might take years before I see this particular card autographed again, so I'm really sad about the whole thing. It's not I can just bid on another one like it.
