In the Magic The Gathering world, since 1994, I've built four to five digit collections six times and unloaded them each time, with each time spending the money on non-investment stuff. If I had all of those cards still, the collection would be worth probably double-digit millions. I've owned several hundred dual lands over the years, for example, and full set of power nine along with many Legends and Arabian Nights key rares. Almost all of the cards were near mint or better as I often build collections by opening a buttload of packs/boxes. And don't get me started on Pokemon...I used to open boxes and sell singles back when S1 1st Edition was the only product available to open.

Luckily my current hockey card collection was started in 2006 and I opened a ton of 05-06 product. I was even opening that stuff (UD base brand, SP Authentic, Rookie Update, etc.) even in 2009. I overall was pretty lucky in hitting the best rookies/players during the 2006-2010 run and have a lot of crazy pulls. Since hockey cards are not exactly the most liquid of product because I live in So Cal and I don't like to sell on eBay, the collection is like 99% intact. It was a six-digit collection (just counting the good cards, like $40 or more) before but after recently, it's gone up a lot more.

(I really shouldn't call my hockey card collection a "collection". I do have a Kings PC, mostly of Drew Doughty, that can certainly be called a collection but the other 97% should be called an "accumulation" since it's just the cards I opened from packs myself. Some key players I have "accumulated" many nice RCs and auto/patch cards of included Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, some Malkins, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Carey Price, Steven Stamkos, etc. that I opened from packs.)

My current MTG collection started the last five years and has come up to about six digits at this point. I started building it after I stopped collecting hockey/opening hockey card packs.

Love how MTG was mentioned here. I collected Alpha graded and Vintage hockey. MTG has done extremely well for me. Also have a 9.5 Alpha Lotus but no pics as it is in a vault.

UDS1 delayed until December. Supply chain issues. They should put their downtime into improving QC.
Will be interesting to see what the big draw is to their booth at the expo in Toronto. S1 is always released the same week and UD does the priority signings program.

Also talk about taking a hit when they say S1 retail won’t hit stores until after the holidays.

Panini and Topps are releasing product. Starting to wonder if "supply chain" is a cover for something deeper with UD. Considering their abysmal QC last year I wonder if they are scrambling to get their house in order. They have yet to release a checklist which also has me wondering.

Has anyone bought an "expensive" (over 1000 CAD) card from europe through eBay? The seller is shipping through DHL and (if I win the auction, which I probably won't) I'm wondering what is the best strategy to get it to Canada. Should I get them to ship it directly here in Canada or to the US (in Oregon) with Shipmycards.com and then having them re-ship it to canada to avoid those outrageous customs fees.

They’re probably finding ways to fix the checklist since they most likely included players who signed/traded to other teams during the off season.

I used to collect cards through the 80s to mid 90s, hadn't thought much about it since. Bought a box of Upper Deck MVP 2020-21 on Amazon to show my kids.
The biggest thing that struck me was the quality of the cards. The photos are terrible, I would guess 90% of the photos were taken of guys during warmups. The overall design is vanila as all hell, and the back has no info. They are terrible.
I guess its all about the variations and special inserts these days and the actual quality of the cards is worthless.
Still my favourite card of all time - Mike Liut, 1982 super action.
Really disappointed in the latest cards I've seen.

I would stick with series 1/2 for good photos..... Although this year there were lots of quality control issues with the base cards. Buy some 2019/20. The photos that use really are amazing. Some great shots there.

It really varies by set. Hate to say it, but it’s best to research in advance as there are so many different sets released each year and different sets fit niches. Some products are more about variations/parallels (MVP, Allure, OPC Platinum), some are focused on autographs and memorabilia (SP Game Used, SP Authentic, Ice), and there are high-end products that are all about the hits (Ultimate Collection, The Cup). There are also niche products like CHL, AHL, and Team Canada.

Upper Deck Series 1 and 2 are the main staple products, just as it was in the early 90s, and the rookies from the sets (Young Guns) are the most often sought after rookie cards. The canvas cards that come from those sets also have some great shots. This is the traditional product, which still has inserts, and it’s possible to still get memorabilia and autographs but those aren’t the focus. It’s a 600 card set (300 cards in each series, including rookies and checklist cards). Hobby boxes costs a little more and includes more hits (including some that are found in hobby only), retail boxes are great (and cheaper) if you are after the base set, rookies, and regular insets.

I saw a post from the local card shop that it’s now pushed to mid-January. UD is going to completely miss the holidays now.

20-21 SP won't be out to March now. Yes, 20-21. Last seasons cards. are almost going to miss this seasons regular season. and still might.

If a 20-21 product comes out in 2022, can you even still consider the cards you get from there real Rookie Cards?

Absolutely, if they are for someone like Shane Bowers, who still hasn't suited up for a single game and has had like 300 cards so far featuring him.
