This thread actually makes me glad I live where I do. While I occasionally do miss individual instances of NYC food, there are places near here where I can get almost everything in each of the major categories. The handful of things I can't (like bryndzove halusky, jerk chicken w/rice & peas and oxtail gravy) my wife has either learned to make from home (she's an excellent cook) or we can get by driving 30 minutes in the car.

It's just so much nicer to no longer have to put up with the traffic, parking drama, the crowds, public transportation, random dudes yelling at strangers in the street, having to constantly look over my shoulder and threat assess people, and all the other BS.

That's how I feel about living in Central CT. Towns like West Hartford, Avon & Glastonbury etc offer all the food options I need without the hassle of the city. Don't get me wrong, instead of having 100 excellent pizzerias like Brooklyn does, we have about 7. (plus New Haven is only about 40 minutes south) We have about 5 good bagel shops...so on & so on. However I can buy all my beef for grilling at home from a local grass fed farm. Or my eggs & my fresh veggies direct from the farmer. It's trade off I'm completely ok with.

ahh dude you got me waving a green flag. food from the farm, especially eggs from i'm assuming uncaged chickens? no fruits and veggies and beef that are not tarnished by gmo applications? you got it good. and look at it this way: if your area has good bagels, then the chances are that the pizza in that area is over 95% is also going to be kickass and just as good as any of the brooklyn joints. so out of those 7 nearby you might prefer say 3-4 of them the most, and that's all you really need.

oh yessss…..from Katz….with mustard on rye. Side of their fries, and a Dr. Browns black cherry soda….
Very few kosher style delis around anymore but a NY pastrami and a hot dog (frank) were my go to for decades. Never got in to the Dr. Browns just because I never tasted it.

Loved Pastrami and Things in Commack for decades but haven't had them since 2007. Bens deli was okay but not as good as Pastrami and Things. Had Stage Deli in Vegas. Used to get a pastrami sandwich for around $5 but assume they are around $20 now. Shame that so many kosher style delis have closed down.

Yes lots of good memories from Commack area. Pastrami N Friends was on Commack Road. I use to play hockey in Dix Hills occasionally. Actually played there with the Ferraro twins.

Hah, me too. Chris King once played there with us.

La Scala was actually some decent LI pizza. Wonder if it's still there.

Dr Browns cream soda & black cherry in the glass bottles used to be delicious. I think they sold out to Pepsi

Boylan's versions seem to be more prevalent these days, taste just like they used to & are still made with cane sugar.

As soon as you said Pepsi took over was like , yup. I don’t drink soda anymore, but those sodas used to be the best .

Pastrami sandwich, on Rye, mustard and a bottle of Dr. Brown’s. Those were the days. Lol

That's why I mentioned Boylan's. They fill the void very well....but pricey as hell. Most places charge $5 a bottle for them. I barely drink soda these days so once in awhile I'll be in the mood for a Boylan's black cherry.... but one is never enough. $10 for two 12 ounce sodas is just stupid... it's more justifiable to order a beer. Sigh.

We went to the Montclair brewery today for Father’s Day. Place across the street is called bread & dough. Beer is decent-ish. Looks like they have a few cooler highlights on the menu, but the tap offering today is middle of the road. The pizza from bread & dough is surprisingly strong. The crust is almost like a naan/pizza hybrid. Probably helps that I’ve had a half dozen brews, but I’m throughly enjoying the vibe of the brewery and the pizza.

Happy fathers day! Let's see some pics of the pizza & beers!

Yup we do a CSA up here too that gives us meat (we usually alternate turkey and ground beef), milk, and fruits/vegetables.

The milk is non-homogenized which is awesome and actually healthier too. The actual dairy is only about an hour from here but they distribute locally so we don't need to go there to get it since they sell it at the farm that runs our CSA. It's super fresh...even comes in glass bottles.

And every other week, there's a guy who fishes off the coast of LI but comes back up here to sell fresh fish basically out of his van. Some of the best fish I've found up here, and it's not just the common stuff - he has swordfish and skate, among others.

Like you said, so many more options, but without the drama and the crap. I actually think there are more options for more categories up here than the city, but you have to be OK with things closing earlier, and like you said there just aren't as many things in each category, so if your top choice isn't open, you're either OK with a long drive, not having that thing, cooking at home instead, or having something that's not quite as good that's further down on the list. But we've got a beautiful piece of land, there's nature everywhere, it's easy to play sports as an adult without exorbitant fees or having to fight over use of recreational space, and people are just generally friendlier across the board.

Reminds me:

Gimmicky, always a wait to get in, and a TON of fun. Harold's in Edison, NJ. Always a blast to bring a half dozen people or more there.

Not sure how many of you follow food youtubers the way I do, but there are a ton of awful ones with a significant amount of followers. Their recipes just don't work.

A few of my favorites that you can always count on for great content and delicious recipes are:

Not another cooking show is probably my favorite because he is from NY and does a lot of recipes that have an Italian influence.

Why not afterall, let's kill an aglio e olio under 3kg of parsley and say that we take inspiration from italian cuisine...lol.

So pizza isn't the only thing I eat, even though I really wish it was. Summertime means it's grilling season (although I grill year round) & I picked up a bunch of grass fed meat from Hastings Farm in Suffield CT. They are a family farm that raise their own cattle right on the property.

Tonight I went with Ribeyes.

On Sunday we went to a local farmers market & grabbed organic potatoes & asparagus with a bunch of other goodies. They complemented the steak nicely. Sam Adams pairs really well with red meat.
